Your videos are really great. A calm voice of friendly civility discussing a dignified and absorbing hobby, in a world with an excess of irrationality, chaos and distress. Even though I am seeing this one 2 years after you made it, it is still a pleasure to watch. Despite my favourite pool being shut down, and the beach still a bit chilly, I am thinking of getting one of the Orient Divers. I totally agree, the explorer -esque dial is really good and very clear.
@RelativeTime4 жыл бұрын
Wow, thank you! Unfortunately all our pools are shut down as well. Personally I've come to like Orient's Kamasu better, but the mako is hard to beat for the price. It's also one of the few dive watches to have a dial like that.

Only retired my mako I after 7 years, no service because even after bicycle accident it was a bit scratched up but it worked fine, alas I lost the pin in the pool as the cheap band has worn over time....so new complete band required or I just buy the new model for similar price which is what I ended up doing. Great watches, except I thought the black one was just as nice and it's not so now I have two Mako II models one blue for everyday and one black for backup or whatever.

Your video made me finally buy the watch recently and it is an amazing piece indeed. One thing I will add to the review is that legibility is amazing. Usually I need a few moments to read time from my watches (sometimes more, especially if someone asks me the time), but with the Mako II it is an instantaneous and natural thing.

Also picked up a blue one on the MassDrop. Yep, just a fine all around watch. I like watches with a mix of Arabics and other indices. I’ve received several compliments on it. Was the first Automatic I paid for-- but an Amazon’d Seiko beat it to my wrist. Thanks- wore mine today as I saw you had done a review.

The Mako 3 is already out. Apparently there will be no Ray, just 3 higher end Mako with sapphire, and 2 lower end Mako a bit bigger and mineral

I picked up the black Mako II as my first automatic watch purchase (I inherited my dad's Breitling Avenger Seawolf Titanium so that's my first ever watch) and I absolutely love it. It looks cool and different enough from the usual Submariner homage divers to stand out from the crowd. Mine hovers somewhere around gaining ten seconds a day. I wear a different watch every day so I usually have to wind and set it once a week anyway. Other than the smoother sweeping motion and higher water resistance of the Breitling, the Mako II holds its own. If you put it in front of someone who was new to watches I don't think they'd be able to guess that they were in different price brackets. Your review was spot on. This is one of the best bang-for-buck, pound-for-pound watches out there and I can't recommend it enough as someone's first diver. I've actually set the blue Pepsi dial version as a weight-loss goal. If I can drop 20 pounds, I get to buy the watch. I hope I can pull it off because that Pepsi bezel and blue sunburst dial is hard to resist!

The Mako ll is a bit more versatile looking than the Ray ll. It has more range in where it is appropriate to wear. Snorkeling, office, dinner out, beach or cabana, job site, community or client meetings, sailing, piano bar, etc. It's has a slightly more classy and sophisticated look. That is a really gorgeous dial. I never really realized that dive most divers avoided arabic numerals (shows how much of a n00b I still am), but now that you point it out, I can't really think of many that do. I really like the whole dressy diver look as I think it adds a lot of versatility to the watch. But right now I'm thinking of trying to pick up an SKX and swap the bezel to a 12 hour dual time, but that project is still a little ways into the future (probably after I liquidate my Heroscape collection).

With 2020 prices on the SKX models over $400 now the Ray/Mako ii models for less than half that are simply a better choice. I keep picking it from my watch box as my favourite watch. It is the right size and is comfortable to wear. No problems with the bracelet for me. From my own experience i can tell you that it is great. There is just one thing i don't like, it is the grinding sound of handwinding it. The crown is a little to small, but you'll get used to it. I just bought a Mako 3 (black dial and bezel) on eBay UK for £180 which is a pretty decent price considering that on the Orient Japan website the price is ¥38000 (£265) and Amazon have some for £280....it's a lovely watch but very similar to the Mako USA 2 but without the solid end links. If you are in North America then don't bother with the Mako 3 just get the USA 2.

That’s a pretty good price. I emailed orient USA and asked about them. All they told me, was that they would be introduced stateside in the next few months. The Mako 2 is the watch I grab when I am not sure where the day will take me. I purchased a strapcode super oyster bracelet (the tapering makes it more comfortable and it feels more secure on the wrist) and a sapphire crystal (from crystaltimes) as upgrades, and it takes the watch to a much higher level. The only real gripe I have (which was echoed in your review) is that it would be nice if the second hand hand some lume.

I picked up Ray II few weeks ago, arrived on christmas eve, been enjoying it a lot! Nice looking, and solid feel. I'm considering modding the bezel (I prefer a coin edge look), maybe with a nice ceramic insert as well, although getting that, insert and a nice strap would cost much more than the watch itself :) Curious, my Ray II is not very consistent in terms of accuracy. Sometimes it's +5, sometimes it's +25. I ordered a demagnetizer, I read that my watch have been magnetized during shipping. Everywhere I looked it seems it should run +/- 10 max..
@RelativeTime6 жыл бұрын
I'd give it a little more time before demagnetizing it. I've noticed that sometimes they act more sporadically the first few days when I first start them up. Otherwise you could try it. Another option could be the newer orient diver when they are more widely available. I'm not sure what to call them, I got one last week. So far, it's very nice. But I did notice that the bezel is more flat, and doesn't tape as much as the mako ii and ray ii. I'll have a review up in a few weeks. but minittowatch has one of the black dials up already. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nnPJlWCDhsakh5I At 10:15 you can see it right next to a ray ii.

I can't see the Mako 3 being a replacement since it takes away some of the characteristics that made the Mako 2 so popular, so maybe it's just an addition. Kinda like the Bambino line has a few watches, but with different generations to signify their differences.

@@RelativeTime Excellent review as always! I own 3 Seiko SKXs (007/009/013), and a Orient Ray II. They are roughly the same size physically. The main differences are: *Much better spring bars on the SKX *3:45 crown SKX vs 3:00 crown Ray II *Much easier to grip bezel on the SKX *No plastic spacer surrounding the F6922 movement (seems better constructed than the 7S26C, yet more complicated at the same time with added hacking and hand-wind.) *Ray II has a very stiff regulator adjustment compared to 7S26C's. *Lume about equal....initially brighter on the Ray II and greener in color. *Protected Hardlex lume pip on the SKX vs non-protected lume pip on Ray *Much larger crown on the SKX *Slight chapter ring misalignment on one SKX. *SKX case feels more solid and contorts to wrist better. *Ray II case-back takes up more area. I look forward to your thoughts about the SKX. Thanks again for the review!

I own both SKX 011 and Mako II. Mako is much better than SKX. Decent quality strap, better finishing and much modern movement. Also Mako just feels better on my wrist. All the hype about SKX is ISO certification, but who is still using mechanical watch for diving?
@41alone5 жыл бұрын
mako 2 pepsi great watch if your ok with it stoping every time it gets between 10:15 and 10:20 then needing a sharp rap to get it running again right out of the box I had seen a couple of reviews indicating this might be a problem and bet I could dodge that bullet I was wrong returned it today
@RelativeTime5 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that. Did it look like the hands were running into each other? Or would the second hand just randomly stop during that time frame?

Good review mate. I have an orange Ray 2 (which does have lume on the second hand). It's a fantastic watch and I have it on a nice black leather strap. Im not a big SKX fan (the ISO certification really doesn't impress me) and personally I'd rather have the Orient (Ray or Mako). I think you get more of a watch. But simply my opinion, and everyone's is different
@RobertNES8166 жыл бұрын
For the price Seiko charges for the SKX they should use the 4R36 movement instead of the basic 7S26. I mean you pay all that money and the watches face doesn't have applied markings or hacking and hand winding.
@RelativeTime6 жыл бұрын
the movement is my biggest issue with the SKX. The ISO cert adds to the cost, because they test each watch individually. But for everyday life, these are more usable and look nicer.

I wish purchase for Christmas the MAKO II Ref. : FEM 75001 BW. I don't expect a movement highly accurate but the bracelet, how ergonomic is it ? Thanks in advance for your help. Regards.
@RelativeTime6 жыл бұрын
I think that's a Mako II XL model. So it will be a little bigger then this one. I think it's about 44.5mm wide, but I "think" it uses the same bracelet. If it's the same, I'd say it's good. Maybe one of the better ones in that price range. Check out the other comments, a few people have talked about theirs. So far everything is positive. Cheers!

Thank you! I've been hesitant to touch the SKX, because there are already so many good reviews on it. But I think I will have to soon. What do you think of the orange SKX011? I'm debating if I should look at that for something different. Plus I don't think there are as many videos on it.
@adnoHis16 жыл бұрын
It is the less known for sure. However I would like your review on your experiences as you professionally do on the SKX009. For me it looks like the best of the 3. See what you think. Also if you can do review on Seiko SUN019 as I believe is superb and less known in general. Don't forget to do Victorinox INOX, Masted Diver 500 and the Military Automatics ones. Too much to ask?...ha, ha....Keep the great Work!

So does the Kamasu wear smaller than the Mako II?
@RelativeTime4 жыл бұрын
I think they wear about the same. I'd have to double check the specs, but I think the cases are almost identical.
@tirrelldaveport36714 жыл бұрын
@@RelativeTime yeah I've heard the Kamasu being anywhere from a 41mm to 41.3 to 41.8. Different people say different things. Most people have the lug to lug of the Kamasu a little smaller than the Mako though
@RelativeTime4 жыл бұрын
@@tirrelldaveport3671 I don't have this Mako anymore, but I have a Mako USA. Which should have the same case, but with drilled lugs and sapphire. Just broke it out and compared it to my Kamasu. I didn't write down the exact measurements, but the Kamasu is about 0.1mm wider (with the crown), and 0.2mm shorter lug to lug. So it's not a big difference, but when I tried them on the Kamasu did feel a little smaller. Although I think that's because the lugs are slimmer and streamlined than the overall lug to lug. Between the Kamasu and the Mako II, I prefer the Kamasu. It's one of my favorites, and I can't say enough good things about it. In addition to the sapphire and better lume, I also think it has a better and easier to use the bezel. Mines currently sitting on a strapcode bracelet. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXqbc5SifNeJq8k

Just an fyi. ORIENT dive watches that do not have a sapphire crystal and yobokies bezel, will damage easily. My original Mako USA has both.

I have 5 Orient watches(Mako2, Ray2, Kamasu red, Kamasu green, Kamasu gen2) now. They are all great watches, but if you shake them left and right softly for more than 10 seconds, they all speed up for 4 ~ 5 seconds immediately. If you do it again, they speed up more. Also, they all speed up approximately 10 ~15 seconds after walking for 3 ~ 5km or exercise in gym) Since all of my 5 Orient watches and SKX007 are same, I think it's normal for them. Anybody has comment for this here?

This is the first anyone has said anything. I'll have to check this on my kamasu. I guess I'll sync it to my phone, go for a long walk then recheck it.

My Mako II looks truly bad-ass with this strap: 22mm Bonetto Cinturini 270 Black Smooth Italian Rubber Dive Watch Band Strap - and, yes, Hawaiian pizza is hardly a crime... it just isn't.
@RelativeTime6 жыл бұрын
That's a nice strap. The best Hawaiian pizza I've had was here in Texas. Local place that serves it with roasted cashews and sun dried cranberry. My wife ordered it, and I was hesitant to try it. Just sounded weird, but it really does go together. Gave it just a little bit of sweet and tangy flavor.

I love Orient ( I have 2 Rays ). I do not think a dive watch needs a day and date window " Hey Juan, it is Tuesday, we need to surface"! I think the D&D windows should be removed and the number 3 put back on the dial; the visual balance will be improved . The watch I actually use for skin diving is a Vostok Amphibia 120811 without a day and date window ( my West End Watch Impermeable is too pretty to get wet!) .
@RelativeTime6 жыл бұрын
You have a good point. Although when I’ve been under water, I’m more looking at my air pressure then my watch. I have and will be using my orange scuba dude for diving. It has a date, but the next Vostok I buy won’t. But that’s more from the lack of a quickset date. Cheers!
@burkholdst.rudderberg35746 жыл бұрын
I think that it is obvious that many of us who actually wear a watch during water sports do not wear our best. We wear Vostok, Orient, and Casio in the water and leave the Longines, Omega, Rolex, and the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms on the dresser at home. ( We wear these when we are just TALKING about diving! )
