This is a figure representing the Emperor of Japan in its traditional kimono. The model, that I really like, is of Japanese origami master Yoshihide Momotani. It goes hand in hand with the Empress (go to www.senbazuru.eu for its video tutorial) to form the imperial couple. In fact it is an origami referring to the Japanese festival called Hina Matsuri, literally "Doll Festival". It is celebrated on March 3 and is dedicated to little girls.
On the eve of this feast, little dolls are placed on a multiple levels platform, where the imperial couple occupies the top. Other characters and objects occupy the other three ranks of the platform, but you can also settle for a more simple setup with only the imperial couple, and use origami instead of dolls! This folding will be highlighted by using a beautiful paper with colourful patterns, and a square sheet of paper of at least 15 cm (6") wide.
