Few figures in the early Church were as divisive as Origen of Alexandria. His theology was very influential to the early Church, but aspects of it were later condemned as heretical. This video will look at Origen and his life.

"Well...'cut off' from the Church as it were" LOL Thank you! This is a really great overview of Origen and you all handled some of the "gray" parts of history really well. Excited to see if you'll do that deep dive into the Origenist Controversies in the future. Keep it up!

You packed so much good info into such a brief video. I loved this! I’m a fan of Origen and think his contributions to the early church are shamefully ignored because of ugly politics. Origen had so much influence on important church fathers that were nourished by his spiritual teachings. Devout and faithful, Origen did not deserve to be condemned so many years after he lived and wrote. Origen faithfully dedicated his life to the church. Had he been fully martyred as he nearly us, Origen almost certainly would have been sainted, rather than condemned. Thank you too for the additional video on the controversies that erupted years later. So good!

People need to read some of Origen's Homilies before they cast him away as a heretic. This guy was truly a genius.

True. I have Arabic Eastern Christian friends and they say Islam is a plagerism of Eastern Christianity and also, it is rooted in Arianism and Gnostic Text of Gospel of Thomas …

Interestingly, Origen stated in Justinian, Ep ad Mena, ( Mansi, 1X, 524) "God the Father, since He embraces all things, touches all things that exists....The Son is INFERIOR in relation to the Son....for he is SUBORDINATE to the Father. The Holy Spirit is still LOWER in Degree". Bit of a puzzle for the 'trinity' doctrine dont you think? ( Origen at least here shows preference to Holy scripture at 1 Corinthians 11:3 & 1 Cor 15:28) rather than pandering to greek philosophers which most of the post 2nd century 'church fathers' did

Philippians 2:6 seems clear..Jesus is co-equal to the father and in the form of God…the Holy Spirit is Gods spirit..to consider them separate is folly

@@mccalltrader Sorry but this not what Paul is saying! Why does Paul use 'Morphe' ( 'form' )which in no way suggests the actual person they are 'morphing' but an 'image' a 'reflection' ( See Col 1:15,16 & Heb 1:3). These descriptions by reason of their very definition do not suggest an 'exact replica' or the actual person they are the image of, but 'an exact likeness' which is correct in the Son's case since he is the 'onlt begotten Son' OF the Father! So Jesus was 'just like his Father', but NOT his Father whom he in turn worshiped and adored and obeyed! ( Verse 11 of Phil 2 agrees with this point of view!)

He believed in reincarnation and was therefore anathema…
@SaintsandStuff

In our deep dive video on why Origen was condemned we go into which of his beliefs where historically controversial and the political circumstances which led to his condemnation. The TLDR version is that Origen was not condemned for universalism or believing in reincarnation as is often claimed, but rather regarded subordinationism and a mistaken attribution to Origen of some beliefs regarding whether or not Christ had a pre-existent soul or created soul.
@yeahsowhat643
@yeahsowhat643 Жыл бұрын
@@SaintsandStuff Good to know, and my assumption is the church believed he had a newly created soul which was not Origen’s belief therefore the pope held a council and declared Origen anathema for his beliefs.
@SaintsandStuff
@SaintsandStuff Жыл бұрын
@@yeahsowhat643 Close. Another writer’s work, which was influenced by Origen’s writings, were erroneous attributed to Origen himself. These writings were used in a debate between rival monastic communities on the issue of whether Christ had a divine immortal soul or a created one like ours. The Emperor, not the pope, convened a council to solve other theological problems, but at the council an earlier decision he had drafted in which Origen was condemned for these teachings attributed to him was ratified. The pope initially refused to cooperate and was jailed, but eventually submitted to the Emperor.

@@donovancarson9595 Yes, specifically, that Satan would not be included within his doctrine of apokatastasis (i.e., his universalism). But your point is taken that it could have been more clearly and directly stated. The reason emphasis was put on the Satan aspect is because, historically, that allegation was what was treated as scandalous within his universalism, not the universalism in of itself.
