can't recall if i already commented, but this demo video is exceptional. your playing is great solid, varied, and you actually show very specific ways how you can use the compressor to work in mixes, with excellent, clear results. you sold me on this pedal (above all others) as an upgrade from my mxr 87, which i really like, EXCEPT i can't get a good slap sound from it, it just totally squashes it and loses too much low end mightiness, and with the cali here it sounds like that won't be a problem (plus the cali has that little bit of mojo it adds which i really like.) now i just need $530 CAD!

Can't go wrong with either the Cali76 or the Empress Bass Compressor. I tend to prefer the Empress because I'll take separate Attack/Release controls over continuous ratio settings, personally, and I like having separate meters for both input and gain reduction.

Nice demo. I had the Cali76 Compact Bass for the last few years and it's been a wonderful compressor. I snached one of these up as soon as it was announced and it's simply brilliant! Just when I thought the Cali76 couldn't really be improved upon, the new Bass Compressor comes along. I LOVE the LED metering. That was my only gripe about the Compact Bass.

That’s honestly a tough question… It might honestly come down to whether you like having loads of options and fine details at your fingertips, or whether you want something more tactile that only does one thing, but does it really well. I haven’t seen anything that works quite like the hyper luminal, but it’s probably easier to get to something. You can always leave on with theCali

How does this compare with the Darkglass Hyper Luminal?

Less versatile out of the box (only one mode) and as a result a little more focused. The HL in FET mode is doing an impression of the 1176 just as this one it. Loved the HPF on the Cali

Hey Amos, roughly how many Hz do you tend to set your HPF to on comps that have it?

As I mentioned already, the HPF is in the sidechain and is here only to determine, which frequencies above the HPF knob will trigger the Compressor. Its not a usual HPF, where the lows are not affected by the Compressor. Here, the whole signal gets compressed, when the Comp kicks in.

Dear Amos, I noticed you understood the HPF wrong. It doesn't act as a HPF per se (leaving the low frequencies unafected). The HPF on this unit is in the sidechain and only determines, which frequencies hits the compressor . But still, the whole signal will be compressed, also the lows.

You are right and wrong. If you have experience with using compressors you would know that his description are accurate from the standpoint of how it sounds. When you use the hpf on the sidechain and move it up. The effect on the sound is that the lows sound less effected. Less squashed. You sound like someone who is basing their opinion on words and not experience.

This explains why lows filtered out in the side-chain receive progressively less compression toward the start of the audio spectrum, or none at all, depending on the filter’s configuration, making those frequencies louder through the Make-Up Gain at the output. While this isn’t true dual-band compression (since the signal isn’t split into separate bands for different processing), the result is similar and can be somewhat replicated by a dual-band compressor."
