Pull yourself together, expose yourself over and over whatever makes you anxious, have breakdowns, rinse and repeat till you've overcome your anxiety. Saying this is a lot easier than doing it of course, it can feel nearly impossible to triumph anxiety but I believe you can get there and I know you will find your soulmate if you keep on trying hard enough.

Similar to the way of exposing yourself to a new programming concept or language. You may not assume everything is going to work right away and there are always bugs to fix or accept (sometimes a bug is a feature of an imperfect system)

I appreciate in particular how he addressed the question about the color scheme. Instead of dismissing it as a clueless question (which it is) he pointed out why exactly the question did not make sense and managed to educate the audience in the process.

"Essentially at this age, the chances of any sort of relationship ever happening that wouldn't be totally lopsided in terms of experience or dissonant in terms of worldview and values are looking pretty much zero" Bisqwit, just remember that if a relationship is something that you want, then your chances aren't anywhere near zero, despite what you might resign yourself to thinking. You do have to be open and willing, and that can be very hard. Just remember, when you're feeling insecure about yourself, a great many people subscribe to your channel because they enjoy you! You're a great joy for many people, don't forget that.

Unfortunately I can’t just will people into existence. Mathematical and sociological facts are at play. At the age frame that I would be comfortable with, there just do not seem to exist women that aren’t already in a relationship (obviously excluding), or single mothers or something (the lopsided part; if they have years or even decades of experience of relationships and family life and I don’t, that’s not a fair situation, but one that calls for being taken advantage of - and it would mean that they could not share any of the “first” moments with me) and share a compatible world view (non-secular Biblical beliefs etc.). Even just the latter eliminates like 99% of the world - and sharing a common world view is very important; fundamental viewpoint differences can easily tear down a relationship.

@@Bisqwit I have a different world view but I share with you that it is ruling out over 95% of humanity to be possible friends to me. I understand you a lot because of this. But I myself are in an inner conflict on that topic. On one side, I feel disgusted by how most people (not) think about their existence and the world around them. On the other side, I don't think that it helps the planet if I keep my world view for myself. I am actively interested in politics and learnt the high value of debate, compromises and tolerance. Actually, I have more sympathy to people whose world view is the complete opposite of mine than for the broad mass that does not give any shit about the "why" question. I recognised that in many cases, seemingly opposite-minded people feel very similar like me but frankly just use different terms and see slightly different images but we could still agree on very much. These talks were very inspiring to me. Today, I would say your issue *may* be more your attitude to people of other world view than your world view by itself but I will not judge you, I don't know you enough to tell you what to do. And at the end you have to know what you want. You have to know if your relationship to God is enough or if he may want you to open yourself up to this very complex world but I am sure you already thought about that for decades. Muchos gracias.

It’s not a thing that matters with casual friends, but for a person whom you spend the rest of your life with, it is important. Like the Bible says, do not be unequally yoked. If something is very important to you and the other person thinks it is nonsense, it eats at you. Nearly all of my friends are actually women (for some reason), some of them married, some are younger, most are older, and they all have different world views, and this is fine with casual friends. For a casual relationship, you can tolerate disagreements, and as long as you both respect the other’s right to have different opinion than you, the friendship is stable. But in a family, you do not want to have disagreements. They will be a constant source of potential arguments. The more important the thing is to you, the more powerful chasms it can drive between you.

@@Bisqwit I very much agree with you, I have been in a relationship where we both loved each other but there was a fundamental difference, I liked something which she didn't, she knew it was important to me but she couldn't get to a common ground where I would have made some compromise on my part and she on hers to make our relationship work. She said she was trying and I know she wasn't lying about it, she genuinely tried but I never felt like that. I knew she was honest to me, but I did not feel at anytime that she made some effort on her part. Perhaps it was her inner conflict. Fast forward nine months, we broke up. I still love her (and she does too) but I can't stay with her like that anymore. So yeah, fundamental difference do matter.

42 and single all your life. I feel your pain, bro. If it’s any consolation, most people’s conception of relationship and love is centered around self and fulfilling needs/desires, and not anything resembling “agape.” When the pangs of decades of lost opportunities come to consume me, I remind myself that they are 90% fantasy. @@linux666 for a lot of ppl the issue could be more about getting started with zero experience. it can seem daunting and then the brain protects itself from emotional trauma by coming up with excuses to not wanting to socialize in the first place which might lead to bitterness and/or depression. otoh living happy life alone is probably just as possible as living unhappy life married and given the divorce rates it shouldn't be surprising. the difference is imo mindfulness, if one knows what they're doing and don't lie to oneself about it then it could be fine. it honestly was probably much easier back in the days before 9 to 5 jobs and mortgage.. I could really use a couple of years just wandering around outside, exchange ideas around campfire, build something physical without power-tools, learn sailing, help save a forest or something, but, naah..

What advice would you give to your younger self?
@Bisqwit
@Bisqwit 4 жыл бұрын
I have absolutely no idea. To my knowledge I have never made any mistakes. Every decision was the right decision at the time _given the information_ that I had at that time. There might be bigger life lessons but they are too complex to be put in KZbin comments probably. One of the most striking lessons to me was awareness that people who care about things judge according to that thing. People who don’t care about the thing will never judge you according to that thing. For example, people who don’t care about fashion, will also not care whether your clothing is fashionable or not. I can’t recall any situation where that knowledge could have been useful to a younger me, but that’s the thing with thinking about advice to your younger self. You are only able to recall things that you were aware of. Things you were not aware of are not things you can recall, and thus cannot retroactively give advice on. So instead of advice, the things I would have liked to give to my younger self would have been immaterial things like love. I don’t mean sex, but physical intimacy. A hug. These were things I never had as a child. The only form of physical intimacy I experienced was bullying: punches and kicks, from my peers. Our family was extremely platonic. There was no physical intimacy, aside from physical punishments.

1:47 well, the thing is, that this whole game with women DON'T rely on things that can remind of some sort of resume... let it be this way. Believing in "this one forever" is crashing many people's minds for a very long time, to the point where they end up being old and alone. Being alone since always in your 60s without any romantic contact is a real sad waste. I understand your viewpoint Bisqwit, and it's not about questioning your beliefs or other virtues that you have and guard them. This is your treasure. It's not about changing oneself to fit to a woman either, no. It's about having open mind and open heart to the other person. People are very different, and women especially, are different planet. If you want to have someone that has the very same worldview as you, then you'll probably find a friend. Romanticism isn't hidden in that. You don't work for it. You don't need a portfolio to be romantic. These are little things, and a little bit of a courgae. JUST A LITTLE BIT. Nothing else than that! A Phd in physics and a waitress can be a great loving couple! Relationships don't work that way as you think! Nothing is obligatory! When it comes to love, there are no rules! Remember! :) COURAGE, COURAGE, and again COURAGE. I wish you all the best, and i REALLY love your channel.

When I do narration, I pay much attention to my expression, and I do lots of editing, mixing different parts of different takes together. But on camera I just try to say everything as fluently as I can, and because I inevitably still stutter and fumble my words many times, the entire English language being a tongue-twister to me, I try to keep as stable pose as possible so that the cuts between different takes are not too jarring visually.

Job opportunities that involve relocation, especially across the sea are very few and far in between. I have been approached on a few occassions by Google (for Ireland/UK/Switzerland) and Amazon (Canada) and a couple of smaller companies, but none in California. Also, not everything is wonderful in USA. Healthcare costs in particular are a subject of horror stories, and probably one of the biggest reasons why I am not looking forward to moving to USA.

@@natecoley160 Stop lying. The more relationships you have, the easier it is to process them. My first relationship was, as Bisqwit put it, lopsided. She said I was the love of her life . I actually felt that. Then she cheated me, dumped me and said she wants nothing to do with me. The difference is I'm her ex number 4 or 5 while she was my first actual relationship. The experience is not the same for both. She got over me in a matter of weeks. It took years for me. It was a practical and more of a cold process to her because she had done it a lot of times. Also, stop peddling shrinks. His head is not in need of doctoring. He's a sane man in an insane world. A smart, capable, good-looking guy. As far as factors in his control go, there's no reason he wouldn't be in a loving relationship and about 30 years ago, he would have been. You're stealthily trying to stack the burden on him as insinuating he's single because it's all on him. He has the right attitude. A kind a Stoic approach. If it happens, it happens. No expectations. Exactly. Also, when I am making these videos, I am not in front of crowds. I am only in front of my camera, and most of times not even that. I don’t do well in crowds. For example, I can discuss anything and just fine with one person, but if there are three or more people in the discussion, I am usually quiet, because I am very unskilled at making myself heard in a group. Usually when I try to say something, someone else speaks over me, and I lose my train of thought. Or, I have a single thought in my mind, and I wait and wait for the opportunity to chip in and say it without interrupting anyone, but the discussion wanders and the sentence in my mind becomes off-topic long before the opportunity manifests to express it. If I have the platform, the situation is different. Nobody is interrupting me then. That’s why I can lead dance workshops despite it involving crowds. But as soon as I am not in a teaching role, I am nobody, as good as not present at all.
@paulwratt
@paulwratt 4 жыл бұрын
@@Bisqwit welcome to the club. This is one reason religeous teachings define roles. Dont sweat it, God has not required you to be herd over the crowd, nor may you ever need to be, just as long as you are prepared to stand up when no one else will, this is the most God will expect from you, what ever else you are doing at any moment is the right thing for you to be doing at that point, and only hinesight and exteme overviews will expose any thread of interactive influence. Most people arent aware enough of there own predicament to have an honest view of the world around them, and thos that are, are more often than not, selfish. As long as you employ compassion, any self - ish nature will not have an negaitve impact in the long run (the short term may look otherwise, to others).

Thank you for sharing those answers. I am feeling a little bit disappointed these days since I've found computer science extremely complicated, let's say just the simple fact of building Linux from source, nobody has a definitive, simple or at least clear way to do that, so, what is the point of having an open source OS that just a small group in the world knows how to actually build??? Let's talk about computer graphics, I've wanted to create a Doom engine but it seems that after almost 30 years of its release just a few people in the world knows how to write one. I can keep mentioning a lot of popular projects that are almost imposible to implement by mere mortals like me. Nowadays I have this Motorola Xoom tablet which is actually a good hardware but there is no recent Android versions for it so there is no way you can install any recent apps, I tried to build a ROM based on LineageOS but as always, there is no information to build that from source even, there is no support for Xoom, thousands of hurdles so it seems the world wants me to throw it to the trash... How did you get that huge amount of knowledge? I am just trying to give a hand to the world, fix things, document difficult projects but it seems impossible.
@DusteDdekay

Did they change something? last time I build linux from source I just did "make menuconfig", went through and left more or less everything on default and then make -j 2 (yeah, it was a dual core) and that was pretty much that. Back then I only did it because the nvidia drivers never came with the precompiled modules for whatever kernel I was running, so it was easier to build one from source and point the nvidia driver installer to the right directory. These day I just install the driver package and it "just works"
