I always thought that Leviathan was the coolest thing in the entire Hellraiser franchise. How it towers ominously over the labyrinth, the sound it makes, and getting pierced by its black lights. It was so intimidating and almost Lovecraftian.

Leviathan's geometric "body" apparently has "rooms" in it, according to some of the comics. TBH, I always imagined Leviathan's true form, as the name implies, to be some immense aquatic beast, housed in an immense holding take at the centre of that geometric shape, the last of its kind from a dead universe, with near omnipotent psychic and psychokinetic power within its own realm.

Whether that's because she solved the box (so they couldn't return without her) or if they were bound to that dimension instead, is debatable. One thing I just point out though is the lack of population in hellworld. The population only seems to consist of people who open the box. Or maybe that section of hell is built purely to confine and process people into becoming cenobites. The demon in bloodlines raises more questions that answers. Apparently she was a queen? Where were the demon subjects? Is she one of a kind? One of multiple? Or was she just another cenobite? Another thought, demons might keep that area sealed off. Because there's potential for them via sorcery, to get abducted. Put into a human body and kept under control.

My biggest complaint with the doctor's transformation is that pre-transformation he was a brilliant highly educated very talented brain surgeon. But after the transformation he was reduced to a slayer who just cut people up without any reason besides the cruelty. I think it really did a disservice to his backstory, and erased so much of what made the doctor an interesting character.

An interesting insight could be that every Demon (for want of a better word) has his /her own particular niche of 'Hell'. Anyone remembers the take on 'Lillith' in another great flick 'Night Angel' & even the original 'Constantine' where Keanu Reeves enters Hell to check on the suicide girl. Coupled with 'Event Horizon,' I always found these 2 depictions of Hell to be totally disturbing & downright frightening. The Leviathan concept was just brilliant with the connection to the puzzle box & it's relation to the subtle Labyrinth of unknown horrors awaiting in that other-dimensional maze. Recalling the entities & structure of 'Midian' in 'NightBreed' ruled by Baphomet, it's possible Clive Barker opted to envision a version of Hell where the viewer /reader would draw their own conclusions, perhaps based on their own personal fear of the unknown....IMO

The Epic Comics from the early 90s give an interesting origin story for everything in the original movies. They expand on what was partially explained in HR1 and HR2 especially. That Leviathan came from a universe where it alone resided, until chaotic energies from (possibly from life itself) came through and "corrupted" his/it's realm of seamless perfection. Leviathan attempt to understand, attack and control life from our universe came into the form of the earliest Cenobites.

If we take the comics into account Leviathan is basically a lord of ONE of the circles of hell. There are other lords of hell, including Lucifer, that are in charge of their own respective hells. In fact there was a small scene in the comics where one of the lords of hell openly spoke out against Leviathan and his underlyings in contempt and disgust. Leviathan may be a fallen angel or something else, however in the comics even Leviathan acknowledges that the only being that can cast judgment against it is God himself, it even stated that it's prepared to accept such judgment.

They even have hells invading each other and pinhead swapping sides for a bit. The scarlet gospels book reveals Satan is real and has been missing for sometime in which pinhead is seeking out and eve tually finds him.

Ages ago when I was toying around with an idea for a Hellraiser/Wishmaster crossover, I considered having Leviathan being the first Djinn who denounced their chaotic ways and took over Hell, where Leviathan continues to feed upon and pervert the desires of humankind. Either way, my Hellraiser/Wishmaster crossover would focus on the Djinn and the Cenobites seeking similar goals in distorting human desire but coming in conflict over their devotion to chaos and order, respectively.

The first one was fantastic. I was born in 1998 so i semi grew up with these when i became of age. My mother showed these to me around 14-15. To this day I think the second one is decent, watchable for a awhile until the maze. The first one balls so hard at times. Idk if it was the writing team ir directing for everything that followed left a bad taste for me. But this series is one that could use a facelift. I have always considered this "Leviathan" as some sort of combined biological and computer brain with its own sort of AGI as a sort of concept of both Skynet from Terminator and the Borg hive mind, and Cenobites originally being the species that created it that it eventually turned on creating tormented and twisted versions of terminators meet borg in one, and its conclusion that free will violates Order is the basis behind its initial motivations. That's why it hates dimensions with any form of sentient life expressing independence and uses "pleasure and pain" to overload its victims brains to create an annihilation of independent self awareness. Those few made from humans that have periodic recalls of their humanity is simply a factor of it learning to configure its methods and all the "horrors" are half real and half illusion like a waking nightmare just between that point of dream and awake states. That's how I considered the original Hellraiser. The boxes in turn I always though of as its own efforts to hide the "real key" to its own destruction or Kill Switch, so that whenever anyone happens upon one of its traps it then signals its hordes to carry out its directive and not just like the last movie a special one created to simply shut down the portals between this dimension and those it has infested. So basically there is a cube somewhere in our dimension possibly dropped out of its reach from one of its rebel Cenobites that having had a moment of lucidity dropped it out of this Leviathan's reach knowing it's hordes were going to find the rebel and destroy them before the said rebel could activate the kill switch themselves, in hopes that perhaps a species would become sentient enough to find this device, and figure out what it is for and how to use it to rid all dimensions of this Machine Mind's existence in any and all forms.

I can break the concepts down more based on what Clive Barker originally stated that the Cenobites were human like beings in an extra-dimensional reality rather than a Hellish Afterlife type world. So basically all the mutilations are a mix of body augmentation and implants. The Leviathan is a Super Computer that all these beings are linked into. The majority of Cenobites cannot distinguish any longer between their own augmented reality and distinct physical existence. The few that "rebel" are those that became aware they are all trapped in a hive mind their own species created a very long time ago. The Leviathan then being an AGI (Advanced General Intelligence) gives reference to itself in terms it can best equate with what it learns from the minds it is linked into (such as it comparing itself to the god/master controller of that world). If we really go back to the very first we see more of this being the case and later the various studios choosing to :redefine things in terms of Hell and demons and the Devil more or less pushing the narrative movie goers at the time wouldn't understand it otherwise. One has to remember that the concepts of actually achieving some sort of virtual reality and augmented reality was already in place in 1987 so a lot of movies at the time dealing with ethics, morality, fear, fantasy and tech were some of the most common themes. Even Cartoons of the time were experimenting with such things. All the Labyrinth is, is a representation of the "core mind" of the Leviathan and the things in it the various minds linked into it.

Great video. When it comes to my favorite things, I always like to add some things which I know but they are not mentioned in the video. Ha ha ha that's true; Leviathan is obsessed with law and order, and he really finds humans chaotic beings. And he gives free will to the Cenobites to serve him of their own free will. So Leviathan does not impose his will on anyone. You once mentioned that the Cenobites have their own understandings of good and evil, and that was fair to say, because it is true; so, in some cases we can tel it's not the Cenobites who are really evil, it is as, humans. Humans as Frank of Hellraiser 1. Sinner, adulterer and murderer. Ready for anything to satisfy his greedy appetite. in Cenobites world they do what is customary to do, they are outspoken, they are not hypocrites, as some of the earthly religion --- people doing religion which they do not actually accept, and they commit sins , priests rape children, that are the opposite of the religion they profess, but they commit these sins hiding themselves, because they know that what they are doing is wrong. It is not accepted in our world. Cenobites ,in another hands, do their job, without hiding themselves, which job is normal thing for their world. Something more ---they keep every hell candidate , no matter from what dimension he is from, to knowing what awaits him. Hellraiser has great comic book art; I'm talking about the old classic comics that are more than 17 years old. And I have the whole collection. And there have some good explanations for Leviathan, Cenobites, the other hell societies and the Hell world. But in "The Scarlet Gospels" it is clearly explained that Lucifer is the lord of Hell. Lucifer has never been mentioned before. His first and only appearance was in "The Scarlet Gospels". And as far as i understand Leviathan cannot be destroyed ( maybe only from other Divine forces ) . After Lucifer destroys Hell, there is nothing left of Hell but Leviathan soaring in the emptiness above the ruins of Hell, and this is the last image of Hell that we see in "The Scarlet Gospels". Leviathan is left to levitate alone over a empty void of destructed Hell.

In the newer books which I don't know if it's cannon. They combined hellraiser with Judeo Christian beliefs. In this version, pinhead angered that Satan has never showed his face to torture or punished went on a journey to the deepest darkest parts of hell where Satan was supposed to have hidden himself to be as far away as possible from gods light. Pinhead finally finds lucifers castle and enters. Inside he finds that it appears luckier killed himself, eventually giving in to his despair of being out of the touch of God's light. All that's left is lucifers angelic armor and weapons. Pinhead , thinking he know is the real ruler of hell, puts on lucifers armor and declares himself the new ruler of hell as the other cynobites surround him. Suddenly lucifers armor begins to crush pinheads body and falls to the floor. In a cloud of smoke and dust a shape begins to take form and lucifer now stands tall, back in his angelic armor and "pissed off " that anyone would dare question his authority. Immediately chains begin flying from all directions hitting lucifer and just bouncing off his skin, not even leaving a scratch. Lucifer uses pinheads own chains to rip him to pieces. The other cynobites attempt to flee but they realize they are now in a room with no doors. Lucifer quickly destroys all the cynobites, and now haven been awakened after millenia of slumber, has a new found purpose to clean hell of all its "false gods". Thr title I believe had the word "heart" in it, and again I don't think it's cannon. But I would have loved to see it on the big screen. It's been along time since I read it also so I apologize for details I missed. It's much better of a concept when you read it by the author.

In Bloodline, Pinnhead tells Angelic that "Hell is much more organised now". That could mean that during Leviathan's rule, Hell was more chaotic and now with structure it could mean that it is gone

leviathan was certainly one of the best villain concepts out there! It made a lot of sense to me as an explanation to our biblical understanding of hell and Satan. Biblical events are very humanized, which makes sense given the writers of the bible could only draw from nature and primitive existence, and it can fall short of making sense in a more modern time. I wouldn't expect angels to be humanoid, nor would I God, and the raw nature of leviathan certainly lacked all human features and understanding. It was an amazing cross between biblical hell and Lovecraft horror, and our brief encounter with this being certainly stokes the imagination while making it clear why it has its dogmatic motivations. Like with all creatures of this magnitude of power we can only hope (or fear) to get a glimpse of it and its actions in direct observation, and of course we only get that privilege due to the fact that we are a removed audience that is not really there. Wow!

Super scary concept for sure. I actually loved the 2022 remake. I thought adding the ritual blade that attacks the user and damns them to a hellish ritual for eternity is chilling... once its tasted blood you are now a sacrificial offering... ☠️

This is my personal idea. Clive Barker did add God and Satan into the universe and The Leviathan was stated not to be either. So my idea is that the primordial chaos leftover from when God created the universe came together and formed the Leviathan. It is obsessed with order, but not the order we are familiar with. It is order that makes sense to the Leviathan and it created a universe to reflect that. The reason the Lament Configuration has power over it is because it is in geometrically perfect order as the Leviathan sees it. If there is one thing the Leviathan isn't, it is a hypocrite. So the Leviathan obeys the Lament Configuration's "perfection" so as to obey it's own rules.

Leviathan is NOT the Lord of Hell - He is the Lord of the Labyrinth. The Labyrinth is "A" Hell. Not "THE" Hell! This very detail is covered by the 2011 Comic series. There are OTHER rulers (of their own Hells) such as Abaddon and Lucifer. The 2013 Boom (For example) comic series "The Dark Watch" covers Abaddon vs Leviathan. It confirms that there are multiple Hells - Each that deal with differing sins. Clive Barker himself made it a point when he created the franchise to ensure that the Labyrinth and Cenobites remain OUTSIDE of such things and thus enigmatic. We need to also note that Clive Barker is NOT a fan of the current Hellraiser universe. With the "Scarlet Gospels" he has distanced himself from what the film franchise has become - And has aligned his versioning of "Hell" with that of the Christian faith. Satan is NOT Leviathan - That title DOES go to Lucifer - Whom is the one that has (most recently) killed "The Hell Priest" (Pinhead) in the "Scarlet Gospels".

leviathan guards the gates of hell leading to earth and needs to use the cubes to convert humans into its army. It fights with the other 7 princes of hell to keep them in. Cubes based on design can bring you to another dimension like heaven realms or hell realms. he has the ability to augment flesh to superhuman levels but cant travel out without cubes. they dont chill in the real world for too long because the angel Ezekiel the Slaughterer slaughters magical beings roaming the mortal realm. Leviathan has a sister who uses her harrowers to fight him on occasion. When you die you go to a realm of hell or heaven. if baphomet makes it to you you become a night breed. *Bows and leaves*

I still remember seeng Hellriser 2 for the first time. It has some flaws mainly in logic but I was yong and Leviothan strack me as some dark lovecraftian diety. It was something incomprehansible and facinating. Imagine my disappointment when I got aquainted with comics version of Leviothan. "He just loves order and humanity disturbes order so he uses lament boxes to crate an army of cenobites to conquer the realm of humans" thing. It's so utterly stupid. Humans is not the only sentient race. There are tribes of the moon pro minimum and that's just in one of many parallel worlds in Barker's multiverse. The strategy of recruting through lament configurations is remarcably ineffective. And what cenobites have to do with an army? They are monastic order. From all that we have seen they are some kind of ascets (or hedonistes), explorers, torturers but neither some conquerers, nor ground troops. It looks like someone had to give some explanation to the whole Leviothan and cenobites thing and they went with jeneric one.
