David Patterson is a Turing award winner and professor of computer science at Berkeley. He is known for pioneering contributions to RISC processor architecture used by 99% of new chips today and for co-creating RAID storage. The impact that these two lines of research and development have had on our world is immeasurable. He is also one of the great educators of computer science in the world. His book with John Hennessy "Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach" is how I first learned about and was humbled by the inner workings of machines at the lowest level.

Yah seriously. For programmers and scientists his guests are the best. Better than TED talks.

For a minute I was surprised Bryan Cranston was a computer scientist or something like that.

raid is such a simple idea math-wise, yet the implementation were so painful to use. Thank Apollo ZFS came along!

The important of reliability is tremendously higher for storage. Which is why for example RAIDZ is where it's at.

I could argue that ZFS was the biggest invention since RAID was invented as it solves so many things in one solution. It's a pity that he missed that too. Plus Tape still backs up all cloud storage and is a big factor in the protection of storage loss. RAID won't do jack if threatened by attack by ransomware

Patterson is a great guy but this was hardly the first work on disk array. At Bull we were working on that in 1984 for a supercomputer project.
