DtRockstar should get their facts straight....the "L-88" package wasn't made until 1967...the original 1963 GS cars were "small" blocks...around 377 cid.

I was going to point out that very fact. That engine is definitely NOT original. The correct engine would be a n aluminum 377 in Mouse motor with side draft Webers rather than a single Holley.

The original engines are a long story. In 1963 it was a 377CI for Nassau when all 3 coupés were raced by John Mecom. Before that it was a 327ci fuelie in 1962 for the sole racing GS and the 2 roadsters received various forms of 427ci.

The confusing thing about this car is that it is the silver blue car originally with a fuelie 327, they had the car in the white body (original) that is later but is the whole history of the car's racing with Penske with bigger engines. So they made a whole different body and engine, etc. Car looks different depending on when you are looking at it.

Yes, it's more like the way they ended up, not the way they started. They got refactored as prototypes and had to try and run against the GT40's.

Zora ordered a L-88 from the factory and they shipped it to him in a 1965 corvette roadster .. soon as he got it his race team took the engine out and dropped the engine in a 63 grand sport and went Racing:::....

@@mgn5667 ZORA/GM DIDN'T INSTALL THE BIG BLOCKS! Roger Penske did the BB install after he acquired those Grand Sports. According to an article on a GM site ( www.gmheritagecenter.com/featured/Corvette_Grand_Sport.html ) the 377's were pulled making what Penske received just rollers. Zora did not like the BB for road course racing since they made the chassis handle badly. That's why the Z06 package, which did make it to production, had a 327 fuelie. If you've driven both flavors you'd know what I mean. This difference carried over to the 1st gen Camaros where the SS had a BB for drag racing and the Z28 had a small block for road racing.

During his watch there was an extensive amount of research done on the subject and I've been involved for a very long time in documenting the history of these cars.

Got a wee bit of a problem with the description of the car. The Grand Sports were built in 1962/64, but were all equipped with a 377 cu.in. stroked small block. The 427 engine in this car would have had to be the infamous "Mystery Motor" that Chevrolet developed for NASCAR and would have very unlikely been given to Duntov, or the first iteration of the production "Rat" motor, as it wasn't available until 1965. Even then, it was only 396 cu.in. with the first 427 appearing in '66. It's very possible that George Wintersteen swapped out the original 377 for the 427, but while unrestored, it wouldn't be "original". Also, this couldn't be an L-88 since that motor didn't appear until the 1968 Corvette.

I wonder, is this the George Winterstein car? If so, I remember seeing this car race at the Cumberland(MD) SCCA Nationals. I was there on my honymoon. 5 yrs later I raced there in a B Production Sting Ray.

I gotta ask what is the story with the Motor, as the 327 bored out to 377 is what we've been told is what is in the grand sport, and the L88 motor is most noted for being a late C2, like 66 - 67 option, not early 60's like this car would be. as that is the motor that was used in the Lemans racers, the C3's namely during the 1970 12 hours of Sebring with Steve Mcqueen in the running with a porsche 908. as they won top of the grand touring class with Mcqueen coming in second with the 908.

Kavinsky Smith The engines were NOT bored out 327's. There's no way you get from 327 to 377 from just boring. The 377's were custom built all aluminum engines made specifically for the Grand Sport.

It looks like a Z-11 Mystery Motor (427)--prototype Rat Motor-ultra rare-a couple of GSs ran them (A.J. Foyt had one)

None of the GS's ran 427's all 5 had the 377's in them. Some of the tanker Vettes had 427's in them but they were put in by the driver/owner, such as Mickey Thompson who was testing them at Daytona.

Did anyone notice the color of that engine paint? Was that Traco Gray? Did Chevy build those awesome "Built L-88's" inhouse? I say "Built", as I am very familar with the L-88 and GS's have always sounded rasppier. I would appreciate anyones accurate imput on the questions raised.

I’ve heard that the actual motors used in the 63 grand sports were 388 cu pushing well over 500hp the way they had them built back then that was a TON of power. l88s never came out until 67 I believe. All through the 60s and early 70s all the American manufacturers had to nerf the numbers on there performance vehicles to keep the cost of insurance down. I’ve heard stories of 427 cars, 66,67,68, and 69 making 500+ to the wheels, even though the rating says 435.

The L-88's in Penske's Sunoco roadster and george Wintersteen's car were L-88's built by Traco. The first L-88 was made in the late 1966 model year. Penske had a 66 coupe with one of the very first pre production versions. The cars were all built with 327 small blocks with FI. Later they were replaced by 377 ci small blocks with cross ram 58 mm Webers. When the three coupes ran at Nassau in 1964 they had the 377 ci motors in them. Later after Mecom sold them off some ended up with big blocks some stayed with small blocks. I saw chassis 003 on the street in Calif. back in 1969. It had a regular small block in it with factory sidepipes and was painted a dull silver at the time. I've followed these cars for years having sat in three of them back in 1964 when they came back from Nassau. I was 15 at the time and they made quite an impression on that 15 year old ! I've owned two replica GS's .

Nope the two roadsters chassis 001 and 002 ended up with L-88 big blocks later in their life. Chassis 003,004 and 005 did have 377's in them when they raced at Nassau in early 1964.
