Beautiful brown color. i bought mine in 2008 and their color is more reddish. I think Alden improved the 405 color. Unfortunately these boots are too expensive today... I can't afford a new pair. Congrats from Italy.

JCrew version also has a stained welt. also, whoever works at JCrew isn't especially good at writing descriptions; their version is the 403 with the stained welt and different stitching, as you pointed out. if one were to bring this to their attention they would most likely change the info on their site. case in point: these are built on the Trubalance last. JCrew had it misspelled on the site as 'TURbalance'. when I called to inform them of the misspelling they promptly changed it

The neoprene sole is not as slippery as say a leather sole, but it can be a bit slippery on ice so I'd be careful. In rain and most all other conditions, it's fine though.

Great videos on both Indy boots. You mentioned that you initially bought the wrong size and ended up buying a half size down. How should the 403s with Chromexcel initially fit around the arches and ankles? Will they stretch if they're tight (but still comfortable) ?

Along with going down a half size do you recommend going down a size in width? I am a 10.5 E-EE in Allen Edmonds and Dress shoes. So I would need a 10 D or 10 E?

I used to get confused with 403 and 405 but its clearer now. I like these. I like the redder colour as opposed to dark brown. I think 405 is more raiders and is more original especially colour wise so more authentic. I also don't like j crew name as I don't associate it with Indy boots. I mean what is j crew got anything to do with Indy? I now know 405 is the way forward. I wasn't sure before. But I'm a uk7 so might have to buy size 6.5. I've small feet.

Not sure if I'll get a reply from you, but when you got yours, were they kinda orange? I was able to visit an Alden shop with these boots to try them on and the 405s looked pretty orange in bright light, early afternoon. One of the employees has 3 of them and showed me that his oldest pair darkened up a lot and he doesn't use stuff like Pecards to darken them. So I was wondering if that was the case with your Original 405, that they darkened with use.

The leather varies depending on the batch. Some are more orange than others however the orange does tend to fade over time.

+PHOTOTRISTAN Nice video man. I am a size 7.5 D in the Red Wing Beckman shoe as well as their 6 in Lug Moc...would I be the same size here in the Indy? Thanks for posting these reviews. I am normally a size 9-9.5 in nike running shoes if that helps at all. Size 8 in Chuck Taylors. I tried on the Beckman in an 8 and my heel was slipping constantly, too big.

Once again a great video! What brand camera and lens are you using for your vids? Being a photographer myself I am always curious. I recently purchased a pair of Alden 403, Brown Chromexcel from Need Supply Co. There is a stitching issue so the boots are going back on Monday. You can see in this video that I made below the problem in which I speak. Hope this is helpful to those that love Alden shoes but don't like the variation in quality control. The 405 model is the same one. The leather color varies sometimes.

The J-Crew version is not the real deal the versions from Alden and the Shoe Mart are the real Indy boots .. J-crew modifies their version and the J-Crew version shouldn’t be considered an Indy boot ..

I don't. They usually fit perfectly if you size down a half size from your Brannock size.

Aloysius Adrian I measure 8.5d on the brannock. So, my normal size is basically 8.5 except in some athletic shoes I may wear a 9.

How long would Alden Chromexcel 403's last if you wore them regularly, but not in extreme conditions?

phototristan I think I might try a Chromexcel shoe. I've never had boots like the Indy. I always thought they would be uncomfortable for everyday wear. Are Chromexcel shoes more comfortable than the average shoe? I think you said the Shell was very comfortable from the start. I think Rockport are like that. I had a few pairs of Rockport shoes, but they wear out in a year or so. I usually wear 1 pair of shoes to work for a year that cost me about 100 dollars. If I spent 400 or 500 on a Chromexcel shoe that is more comfortable and will last 10 years or more, that sounds like a good deal.

Canyon Overlook Chromexecel is very comfortable right out of the box. After regular leather and shell cordovan is broken in however, they are equally as comfortable.

Hey Tristan. Wonderful shoe videos - hope to get some cordovan shoes one day :) I live in Toronto (with horrible winters unfortunately) and so was looking for winter boots. Are the soles of the Indy 405s not good enough for snow/ice? I think you recommended the kudus, but what other brands & models would you consider just as good? (Unfortunately, there aren't a whole lot of Alden retailers in Toronto. People here wear Timberlands but I don't find them very elegant.)

They're expensive but will probably last longer than cheaper boots. This is a case of you do get what you pay for. Not to mention these fit so much better and are so much more comfortable than cheaper boots.

Tristan, you've done great videos on Alden Indy boots on KZbin. I recently picked up a pair of Indy snuff suede boots from Alden San Fran. www.aldenshop.com/Store/DrawProducts.aspx?CategoryID=178&ParentID=4&PageID=&Action= I have a pair of Red Wing Iron Rangers and Wolverine Courtland 1000 Miles boots and wanted a suede boot to add to my boot collection. These are my first pair of Indy boots and they are amazing in regards to looks, comfortabilty, quality, etc. I really like the 360 degree welt. The sole is a double waterlock leather sole. From what I understand, it's more durable and waterproof compared to a typical leather sole. I am not sure about traction, slickness and the like. I am thinking about having the cobbler install a proprietary commando sole on these. The cobbler located in the local Alden dealer carries proprietary Alden shoe materials. It would be similar to the special run snuff suede boots that Leather Sole did. What do you think? Or no need to spend the money now to convert to commandos? And why wreck the nice double waterloc soles. The snuff suedes will make a nice boot for business casual attire and jeans as well. I also have a pair of 405s that I am most likely going to return. I was going to keep them over the snuff suedes and do a commando sole, but after wearing them around the house, they just didn't do it for me. I may wait for the next run of Ultimate Indy's from Leather Soul. Hey, sorry for the rambling. I wanted to reach out to an Alden connoisseur like yourself.
