So, this is an original song I wrote back at the end of 2019. I wasn't happy with the orchestration/vocals I did at the time so here it is, re-orchestrated, re-tracked and essentially redone in its entirety! Let me know if originals in this style is a video series you'd like to see, alongside more shanties/ Irish songs and Film/Games covers. Stay very handsome!

Definitely sounds disney, but when I was listening I thought of it as instead of a conflict between 2 people it was one person and the deeper voice was what he wanted to think and the normal voice was what he knew was right. Amazing job Colm!!!
@sciranger67033 жыл бұрын
I love this interpretation! It can also beg the question- is the urchin a rival, (perhaps the singer is a beggar-knight or similar), or is "the urchin" his real self? Is the deeper singer an intentional put-on of what he thinks the girl wants?
@MandalorV72 жыл бұрын
This could be a reverse Aladdin story where the prince is posing as a commoner and meets a girl, falls in love with her and is trying to live in her world. The story would end with the prince willing to give up his noble title to be with the woman he loves.

As I see it, this can only be described as the hero's "I want" song. I agree with the other commenters who suggest that the two characters are one in the same, moreover that the light character is the inner self where as the dark character is the outer self, henceforth referred to as Light and Dark. Examining this split-soul interpretation further, we discover a complex and deeply conflicted character. We start the song with Light yearning for more, to see his private musings become reality. ~ Light: "Tell me when I'll see, things I've only wondered. Someday I'll be standing right there where I belong" Though he doesn't yet elaborate Light conveys a strong desire to escape his current circumstances and highlights our primary motif of belonging. Dark then responds detailing his outward projection. At this points however we are unaware that Light and Dark are the same person. ~ Dark: "Tell me what you see. Am I not the things of wonder? I'm the finest catch, she'd be quite the match for me. Am I wrong?" Though Dark clearly believes that his is in fact a fine specimen, the ending query suggests a hint of self doubt and a need for reassurance. We are also introduced to Her, the pivotal character and driving conflict between Light and Dark. In the following lyric, Light expresses his own self doubt, but Dark interrupts constantly. This is our first hint that Light and Dark are the one in the same. ~ Light: "What could she see in--" ~ Dark: "--ME" ~ Light: "I'm a loser--" ~ Dark: "Except her champion!" ~ Light: "but they'll all know how far I'll go when I am finally gone." The constant interrupts suggest that Dark doesn't want Light to reveal how he truly feels and doubles down on his outer persona, desiring to project a strong image to others. The last line suggest a potential outcome in that our hero's inner light might dim and vanish and Dark takes over. We also have the introduction of the ominous "they" who we'll discuss later on. Sticking with the split-soul interpretation, the next two stanzas become incredibly revealing when we place them side by side. Lets start by comparing the first half of the these two stanzas. ~ Light: "Please tell me She'll see, past these tattered clothes and dwelling." ~ Dark: "What in him could she see, he's an urchin it's quite telling." From these we get glimpse of our hero's tumultuous perception of his impoverished background. On one side he regards his upbringing with disdain and disgust. On the other we see his profound fear of other's judgement. Our Dark persona likely manifested as a shield to cover this deep-rooted anxiety. In the second half of these stanzas we learn of our hero's conflicting view of his employment. ~ Light: "When we're face to face, we'll find a place where I don't have to rob." ~ Dark: "Yes I have my flaws, but the best of jaws and at least I have a job." Ignoring the the first half of these lines, we learn that our hero views his employment as legitimate outwardly, but inwardly as robbery. The immediate connection is the repossession of a debtor's property. To escape poverty by assisting those who exploit the impoverished has only grown the gap between our Light inner self and Dark outer persona. Taking Light's lines together we watch our tale seems slightly stranger. ~ Light: Please tell me she'll see past these tattered clothes and dwelling. When we're face to face, we'll find a place where I don't have to rob." The key point here is that our hero has yet to hold a direct interaction with the subject of his adoration. Dark's Lines on their own reveal just how far his defensive tactics have taken him. ~ Dark: "What in him could she see, he's and urchin its quite telling. Yes I have my flaws, but the best of jaws and at least I have a job." At this point Dark considers himself a completely different person from Light entirely. He fails to respond or even acknowledge Light's previous statements and in fact complete rejects his former self. It is also noteworthy that although he admits to being flawed, he quickly moves on to justifying them with both his looks and employment. He avoids deeper introspection by fixating on these more outwards aspects of his character. Moving on from here, we see the conflict between these two person grow even deeper as Dark sings louder to drown out Light's desperation. ~ Light: "And though I know I've far to go, no matter what the cost I know-" ~ Light: "A place right next to her is where I belong" ~ Dark: "They'll bow down to my feet -- Right where they belong!" Here we see our hero's inner conflict begin to manifest in Dark's anger, directed at the "They" from earlier. "They" likely refers to everyone that our hero blames for his lot in life. His self hatred has begun to fully manifest as malice towards his perceived oppressors. Despite this, Light cries out for that place that he's longed for since the beginning. As we near the climax, Dark has a bit more to admit to us. ~ Dark: "And though I haven't learned her name, no one has such a worthy claim as me. It's destiny that she'll be in my arms!" As our hero's desperation grows, his admiration for this unknown woman grows not only into an obsession but a sense of entitlement, perverting our hero's initial desires. Just before the finale, Light returns to us, to reiterate where we started. ~ Light: "Tell me when I'll see the things I've wondered. To leave this place, I'll finally face what's been here all along." Once again, Light tells of his desire to escape poverty and achieve his dreams. He also foreshadows the need to deal with the chaos caused by his split-soul, that which has "been here all along." As our ultimate climax, Dark projects ever more determined, before Light joins him for the finale. ~ Dark: "When I finally see - her, I'll yell back like thunder. Through fire and stone, I'll take my throne--" ~ Light: Someday I'll be right where I belong!" ~ Dark: "--right there where I belong!" ~ Together: "Belong!" Here we get glimpse of hope and Light rejoins to sing along with Dark. Though not quite singing together, Dark echoes the determination issued by Light a few verses ago. Not quite in step with each other, Light and Dark join in the same message seeking belonging before joining together to carry the final note together, reiterating our primary motif once more. In total we have a story of a man desperate to escape his circumstances. He encounters a woman who inspires him to invest into an emboldened persona. As the song progresses, he pours more and more of himself into this persona, slowly forgetting who he really is. His self hatred and rejection pushes him deeper into this persona, corrupting him and leading him to become obsessed with the woman. Cresting the climax of the song, hope yet persists and Light and Dark sing together even as Dark reaches his strongest presence. As an "I want" song, the story naturally wouldn't end with the that of the song. Following the song, our hero's soul has fully split in two distinct characters, an inner and outer self. This in turn foreshadows the ultimate climax and these two selves grow further in conflict with one another and a final showdown erupts. Our happily ever after in the ultimate joining of these two selves as a united whole, the inner self and outer self working together. And what of the woman? She isn't really a love interest, but more a sort of mentor. Providing the initial inspiration before clarifying and re-inspiring our hero as her recoils from his ultimate showdown. tldr: The hero of our song loses sight of who his is as his outer persona begins to corrupt him into someone he doesn't recognize. ps: I listened to this song on repeat as I typed, formatted and edited this analysis. I have no idea how many times I've listened to it. pps: I really don't feel like proofreading at this point, so I simply apologize for any silly grammatical errors I may have made. ppps: Also, this is just a very specific interpretation of the source material and as I understand doesn't represent the creator's original intentions with the song. So don't hate me!

classic disney wasn't ready for a narratively ambiguous/conflicted protagonist, but pixar's the wrong artstyle. My setting for it: The scion of a minor noble house in a scheming, lawful-evil fire-nation-esque nation, lots of black castles and ominous lightning and toiling peasants. His dad's a legit villain with delusions of kingship (but so's everybody he's ever met, they're actually just jumped-up merchants with a purchased title and a massive debt), he's insecure about his family's status because, y'know, squabbling flexing rich pricks are all he's ever socialised with...until one day he meets a suspiciously well-kept urchin/loveable rogue who bears an uncanny resemblance to the famously tomboyish princess of a (much more good-aligned) neighbouring kingdom. And she wants him to follow her on a quest for the Magic Plot Object of fable and song. He's smitten. He's also been told in no uncertain terms by his dickhead dad that he's gotta get a high-class bride or ELSE. Light and dark have the same objective for now, so he's super in. So daddy packs him off in a suit of bright, shining -PARADE- armour that protects like tinfoil but looks the part, a horse that hates him, and a very un-magical, very well-maintained steel sword. Maybe they pick up one or two other companions along the way. Maybe a centaur shaman who sees through him immediately. Maybe a twitchy tinkerer in the remnants of handmedown blue jeans and flight suit, left to him by his father, who has around his neck the keycard that unlocks the cargo bay doors of the crashed starship I MEAN ANCIENT MAGICAL VAULT YOU GUYS IT'S TOTALLY NOT SCIE- where the Plot Object is kept. The resolution and moral of the story is left as an exercise for the reader. Animate it all in hunchback-of-notre-dame style. Add a few more musical numbers, a reverse-double cross and a comic relief character. Release a direct-to-streaming sequel.

I’d actually like to think of a big plot twist with the “movie” scenario this song would go to. Like this is an early movie song, Gaston type and Aladdin type guys both looking at the same girl. Maybe like the three are pulled together by some circumstances going for the same thing, more or less as a group. But as the movie progresses, it turns out the Gaston type guy isn’t as bad as his lines in this song make him seem. Like it’s just how he was raised so it’s how he naturally thinks, but he gets better as the movie goes as the girl keeps him in line and helps him rethink is outlook on the world. Meanwhile the Aladdin type guy is genuinely good and has a noble goal, but the thing their after turns out to be bad and starts twisting his mind and starts making him paranoid and eventually ends up as the bad guy. Also, the one line from the Gaston type guy saying he’s looking at her “back like thunder” actually makes me think that she isn’t the dainty princess type. Like she’s more of a warrior type of woman with some good solid toned muscle (like her back is like thunder) and the leader of their group. ….and neither of them get with her in the end.

I think there is an fairytale that could be the basis of this song, a hans Christian Anderson fairytale called 'the Shadow'. in it a man essentially has his shadow become self aware and seperate itself from the man, the shadow exploring the world and taking on a form and life of its own. while the man struggles to find success as as a writter(due to people not being interested in what is good, true, and beautiful in the world which the writer focuses on), the shadow has grown successful, wealthy and powerful because it understands the darker aspects of humanity and how to exploit them. eventually the man finds himself dependent on the shadow who helps care for him on the condition that the man pretend to be his shadow in turn. the ending of the original tale is very dark, as the shadow woos a princess, and on the eave of their marriage, asks for the man to remain as his shadow permenantly(effectively becoming the shadows slave). when the man refuses and threatens to expose the shadow for what it is, the shadow has the man arrested and killed. in the original fairytale, the shadow wins, but changing the ending and modifying the story would be an interesting disney film. the hero being a noble soul, but is a poor and timid soul, while the shadow(the villain in this) rebuilds himself into something grand and worldly, but his ambitions go into dark places as he lacks the noble soul of the hero. in a way the shadow and the hero complete each other, and need each other, but also are opposed to each other. perhaps the solution at the end is a reunification of the shadow and the man, the pair becoming one, finally becoming a complete people, with the darker impulses of the shadow kept in check by the mans virtues, and the mans timidity shored up by the shadows boundless confidence. a mutually symbiotic relationship rather than the kind of parasitism.

I had a failed story many years ago (god i sound old) about a refugee from an eastern country who moved to another country in the west and fell in love with an aristocrat's daughter. She loved him back, though there was a rich fantasy italian mercenary who also wanted her hand, and the scales were tipped in the merc's favor. So the refugee joined the army and struck a deal with the merc that after a five year's time, the person who gained the most glory and merit on the battlefield would win her hand. This song reminds me of that dynamic between the mercnary and the refugee. Cheers Colm
