Watch this elephant paint a beautiful image of an elephant holding a flower. You'll be amazed at how her talent unfolds as she carefully completes each stroke. Her mahout talks to her throughout the process as his gentle touch gives her confidence. She focuses on her work and seems to enjoy the approval of the audience and, of course, the sugar cane and banana treats. All of her training has been reward based.
So touched by their horrific backgrounds and loving personalities, ExoticWorldGifts.com now supports, "Starving Elephant Artisans" by selling their paintings so they can continue to have a new life in Thailand. Own a print of the art for $15.
Some Thai elephant experts believe that the survival of the Asian elephant species will most likely depend on the good treatment of the elephants in well managed privately owned elephant camps. All of us would prefer that all of the elephants be free to be in the wild. For many reasons, that is not possible at this time.
You can learn more and purchase these unique paintings at www.GiftsWithaCause.com

Even if the elephant was trained with only positive reinforcement, she would still be forced to make the same painting over and over again by mimicking the guy pulling on her ear. There's no creativity or self-expression in it, and she would rather be playing in the mud.

So cute how each one carries its own little basket of paint. This is kind of scary. How smart she and her whole specie is. She not only drew a pretty decent and detailed picture of an elephant but went back to redraw some of the lines. She saw that the paint would run out and knew that it would look better or more complete if she made the lines darker. Amazing.

To the nay-sayers; The elephant itself is in fact painting. it may have been taught by a human what to paint, but does that diminish it? Elephants have an incredible level of self awareness and awareness of other members of their species, who's to say just because a human taught him to paint an elephant, that he doesn't know he's painting an elephant? He seems to really enjoy doing it, and seems quite confident in what he's doing. The way he increases the shading through the belly of the elephant, to make ti darker as if it's cast in shadow, that is not a mindless act, that is a deliberate attempt and making the image look like something. He goes back and darkens then lighter lines in some are as well, showing he clearly can tell that he is creating an image, not just drawing at random in a specific pattern. Even humans teach other humans how to paint, only difference is we use words to say "good job" instead of elephant treats. No amount of positive reinforcement can make a dog paint a dog.

Some elephants have shown the ability to make abstract "art" of their own volition, but I'm not aware of any credible study that they'll make representive images like this one without being trained to do so. As Moon Moon said, this animal was probably made to memorize this process and paint the same picture over and over by rote - the fact that the trainer is standing there overseeing it the entire time should be a clue here, and as in the linked article he appears to be carrying a bullhook, which would contradict the video's claim that these animals' training was strictly "reward based."

All of you are underestimating animal intelligence if you think that animals don't enjoy engaging with human culture. All creatures on this planet would benefit from synergistic acknowledgment and awareness that there is a hierarchy in life. Be that as it may, the spirituality of all living beings can't be realized until humans accept the responsibility of being on the top of the food chain and the duty to the environment that entails.

They say Elephants posses an intelligence that almost matches humans, watching this blew me away. It's amazing Elephants know what painting is, notice when the Elephant gets the brush refilled when it runs dry, It painted itself which means they possess good self awareness. The painting I know is not like a professional artist but you must understand this behavior defies natural science. Plus it's not like the Elephant has hands, all it has is its trunk, but I noticed how precise the lines are, it even went over again in places that need to be repainted, (so it can distinguish color tones) amazing isn't it? It just shows how much more humans need to learn about animals.

If you look closely during the wide angle shots you will see other mahouts standing on their elephant's left side and they too are leading their elephant during the process. The close ups show an elephant's trunk moving a paint brush across a canvas and it appears to be creating a picture, except it is taking commands from its mahout who is out of the shot. The training process is called the 'pajaan' or 'crush' and is centuries old and is used throughout Asia today. It involves taking a 3-year-old baby from its mother's side and roping it into a small bamboo cage in which it cannot move except to breathe. Of course the elephant fights for its freedom and is beaten, poked with sharp bamboo, starved, dehydrated, and sleep-deprived until it submits to its captors' demands. The process may take a week, depending on how long it takes to 'crush' the elephant's spirit. About 50% of the babies die from the process and the survivors are left with physical and emotional scars for the rest of their lives. The demand for elephant paintings comes mostly from Japan, Europe, and the US, and the motivation from the Thai people is purely financial since a single painting can fetch several thousand dollars. I honestly hope that if people knew the true process for creating a picture, they would not offer any support at all for it. So PLEASE tell your friends, family, anyone who will listen: DO NOT SUPPORT ELEPHANT PAINTINGS IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM! Now I will be the first person to speak up against animal cruelty, But sometimes in this beautiful life of ours we must take things at face value. I appreciate many people on here debunking what they have just seen or raising claims of animal cruelty. However, it is quite simply an elephant holding a humble paintbrush painting a picture for himself/herself or us. Be it a memory of an event of when they were a calf or something this elephant would like to give you, just accept the beauty in these images. If you go through this life constantly analyzing, over thinking and seeing things through a skeptics lens you will fail to see the wonders that are made clear through eyes of love and admiration. It must take many, many hours of training for the elephant to be able to make the fine movements that his Mahout requires of him. The trainer continually gives vocal directions as well as hand movements under the elephant's ear. This is all done, of course, out of sight. It certainly gives the allusion that the elephant is the one composing the painting. Amazing stuff, none the less!

This video actually had me in tears..We have absolutely no idea about the lives that animals carry out, yet we subject them to abject conditions when training them to entertain us, preparing them to be eaten by us, or serving us in general. There is so much more to animals then we think..So much more..

Those elephants are trained with painful methods to follow the movements someone makes them feel on their skin with a hard tool. They are suffering, not painting. This is animal abuse and should be reprimanded, not admired, and let alone paid for.

I hope they treat these beautiful creatures with love and kindness. To those asking why people dislike the video - it's probably because they believe the animals are being mistreated during training and being in captivity. I'm not taking sides either way - all I know is I absolutely love elephants :)

Elephants are extremely intelligent and creative, and have been known to enjoy painting...HOWEVER it seems obvious that the elephants in this video are being forced to paint, seemingly so that the facility they're in can sell the paintings...let's at least hope that they use the money for the elephant habitat...

Wow. I didn;t said they can write or read shit. I just mentioned that Elephants are proven to be SMART. S-M-A-R-T enough to PAINT whatever it LIKES. please try to understand that. The problem you have is you underestimate too much about them. Why can't elephants can perform these what you call "miracles". If a baby can learn to understand, why can't they? Again. I dont say they can READ nor WRITE.

"Care about the quality of his work"? - Yes, because otherwise (if not drawing properly) they get punished. (Or the drawing reminds them of the torture while learning to draw.) I wonder what could be funny about that (fear of punishment)... I cannot laugh about it.

Surely some training involved, but I was much more interested in how the elephant carried the paint supplies up to the canvas, then waited for the human assistant, to do the grunt work, select the brush and hand it to the real artist haha. If an alien was watching this it would surely conclude that the elephant is the more intelligent life form, and the ape was simply a trained service animal.

As much as I want this to be genuine, I can't help but wonder if the elephant was trained to paint, much like they can be trained to do circus tricks. Another video by this channel shows another painting of an elephant with a flower - but it is a copy of this one. If painted by the same elephant, does that suggest it's been taught the strokes?

No human is born with the ability to do anything besides basic functions required for survival. Yes this elephant was obviously trained to paint (as we are) but the fact is the elephant contains the brain capacity to understand how to paint and realize it's not in any way essential to her well-being. In other words, she knows its not required to survive but she's doing it anyway (Even though she was taught).

If an elephant can be trained to walk on a ball it can be trained to move a brush in a particular pattern. I love the utter lack of critical thinking , that much easier for me to take over the world.

I wonder how many of the cave painting of mammoths we have attributed to early man are actually representations of mammoths created by mammoths. perhaps they wanted to communicate why they were going extinct, and drew men with spears. maybe the handprints were one mammoth holding a dead mans hand up to the wall while another sprayed mud over it, in an attempt to say "this is what killed us off."
