That shot of Boba Fett silhouetted against the sunset as Han is placed in the cargo hold is pure villainy in the best way. What a masterpiece.

One of John Williams' greatest scores starts at 2:12. Utterly amazing. It peaks when R2 opens the door to save everybody and they get to the Falcon. It becomes truly beautiful after R2 sets up the smoke screen and comes popping out the other side. Just... wow.

Well the peak affects a certain % of privileged ppl susceptible to goose bumps. There was a science paper on it, regarding the above average intellect of those affected by such rushes aka tingling sensation caused by certain pieces of music.

This film was released in 1980. Star Wars: A New Hope was released in 1977. Return of the Jedi was released in 1983. Of all of them, The Empire Strikes Back is my favorite. It was a cliffhanger! I remember lines so long they wound around the outside of the theater. When the Millennium Falcon made the jump into hyperspace, the audience was screaming, whistling, cheering and applauding so loudly I'm amazed it didn't knock the roof off! Great memories! ❤❤❤❤

Yeah true maybe but they didn't know that at the time, try to remember Leia saw Luke arrive and cried out to him, "It's trap go back, its a trap" Like Calamari Admiral said at Death Star II space assault "It's A Trap" ! Was understandable neither Leia or Chewie would trust Lando.

The part that got to me in retrospect was Leia's look of such emotional sadness when Boba Fett's ship leaves and she knows Han is there and now might be lost forever. This crushed her and you can see the normally resolute princess is stunned for several moments.
@shanon3781
@shanon3781 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you're right, that's a great moment in the film. It really hits home that moment; the way Leia watches helplessly as Fett's ship roars away. The look of anguish on her face--married with the sound, action and music of the scene, lays into you an emotional wallop. It adds another weight on top of the stakes that were playing out. In 1980, you didn't know what the future held-- and as bleak as things looked, the whole Cloud City/act of the movie is done so beautifully, that it stirred eagerness, hope, and a strong connection to our heroes.

And afterwards, you can see how done with the empire she is, as she starts to relentlessly shoot every stormtrooper in their way to the point she wouldn't get onboard the Falcon just to get a few more of them out. Because they are the reason Han was taken from her. You can see how hard Lando pulls her out of danger in more than once, because he knows how important she is to Han, and he wouldn't forgive himself if something happened to her. So much emotion and acting in just a single scene. And John Williams describes her desperation throughout all of it with a masterfully crafted piece of music. How wonderful this film is, I can't begin to tell.

I just noticed that throughout the majority of this scene Lando doesn’t have a blaster, only Chewie and Leia do, but when they’re just about to escape onto the Falcon he suddenly has one and is firing back at the stormtroopers. Also, when the group is ambushed at the beginning and Lando’s people free Chewie and Leia the officer walking at the front is actually Jeremy Bulloch, the actor that plays Boba Fett

One of my favorite parts of the movie! C-3PO is so funny on Chewie's back! In my opinion, I'd say Empire is the funniest out of the three. SW has some really funny stuff, and so does Jedi(even though Jedi's humor is more on the silly side, there are a lot of things that get good laughs out of me) the interaction between characters and delivery of lines is so perfect in this film I find it the funniest.

This is how I remember watching it in the cinema in the early 1980s. Although I saw it in May 1983, a good three years after it was released in north america and the west in may 1980, because the country I was living in at the time had a about a 2 and half year delay of any blockbusters released in the west. Due to the small number of English language cinemas. You had to wait some time before the turn of Empire Strikes Back was shown in the cinemas where I was residing at the time. Also it was 70mm not 16mm as shown here but other than that the picture quality is exactly like here. My 9 year old self had the best movie experience ever. Then saw it again in the cinema with the special edition in 1997 as a 23 year old this time in another country in the west so I saw the sp edition as it came out. However the the 1997 version was cleaned up and extra late 1990s computer effects cgi features added to cloud city. The only place to see star wars movies is in the cinema and nowhere else.

Empire Strikes Back Special Edition wasn't bad. But we did need a scene of Vader making Lando "an offer he can't refuse" to quote _The Godfather, Part One,_ either in the Radio Drama adaptation or at the end of _Solo: A Star Wars Story._ Having the Emperor we know is better, but the dialog still doesn't fit, or the prequel doesn't fit the what's going on here.

Intense, basal, gripping elements of being human: * friendship (Lando listening to his conscience and converting, all going to retrieve Han, even the droids joy in reuniting); * loyalty (Chewie's outrage at his friend's betrayal, again all going to save their friend); * responsibility (in the heat of the battle Lando calls his people to flee); * love (all of the above, and Leia's look as Fett departs as well as needing to be told to leave - let go, momentarily at least); * courage (doing all of the above despite risk to life)

Wow! Very nice observations. Spot on! I love the whole Bespin/Cloud City sequence. It's where this movie turns to a masterpiece for me. You're wrapped up in the fantasy/fantastic of the film, but it's these humanistic qualities that you so astutely laid out about our heroes that make for a great emotional connection, and investment, to them and the events taking place. In 1980, you longed, worried, yet were reinforced through these qualities on display, ultimately hopeful and eager of what will happen next? ---even though the blow was dealt.

The trumpet crescendo at 3:51 was the number one sound moment (as far as the score was concerned) for me in the whole movie when I was a boy. Something about it resembled the ultimate grandness of the unknowing nature of the future. As if it became the very soundtrack to my life; an opening of the door to the adventure that was yet to come. In a way, it made me feel that anything was possible. I was a terribly abused child. Mentally, physically. Sexually. Psychologically. It was hell. But, many years later, I became professional artist, much to my surprise. Are these things related? Who knows....and the great mystery goes on...

I think they needed to make 2 billion on all 5 movies to pay for buying Lucasfilm, which they overpayed for, since nothing was in the works, like for their other studio purchases of Marvel and Pixar. _Solo: A Star Wars Story_ was a flop. Dial of Destiny was a flop. They needed to make 2.5x the budget to break even and didn't. Not sure how much money they made with merchandizing and Star Wars theme park attractions. Since Marvel's been doing multiverse stories, maybe they can do one where the character going to another universe watches an excellent Star Wars or Indiana Jones sequel, where we see a 3-minute trailer?

@@lindaoneil5085 Well, the first two movies are anyway. I used to like the first part where they rescue Han, before people mock how elaborate the rescue is. I'm not sure why Leia left her Y-Wing fighter in the desert; the fleet could have used another ship. Then destroying the second Death Star just makes episodes V + VI a repeat of IV: someone's captured, then rescued, a jedi master dies, then they blow up the Death Star. Not sure how _Return of the Jedi_ should have gone instead. Not making Leia Luke's sister would have been better, so a new character could be introduced while the others are fooling around with Jabba the Hutt.

Chewie and Leia should realize that Lando isn't entirely to blame for what happened to Han. Han did bring this on himself. If he had paid off Jabba when he had the chance, this wouldn't have happened. Han may have been helping the rebellion against the empire but he knows that to Jabba, that's no excuse. The rebellion against the empire means nothing to guys like Jabba.
@sandal_thong
@sandal_thong Ай бұрын
Without Jabba in _Star Wars: A New Hope Special Edition_ giving him another chance, he may have been done with Solo as Greedo claimed, so no payment would have been accepted if he had gone to him immediately after Yavin. What would be interesting is if Luke didn't show up. Lando wouldn't have given Vader the idea to put Han in carbon freeze. Would Vader still have given Han to Boba Fett? "You may take Captain Solo to Jabba the Hutt after I have Skywalker." Vader probably would have taken them all to his ship and Lando probably would have looked out for himself and not attempted to free them. Maybe Vader said Skywalker was Han's enemy and Lando wouldn't know better if he didn't show.

very wholesome outro. After some classic star wars footage, the video ended with a nice bible verse and Minecraft music on top.

I always loved that image of Chewbacca off to the side, blasting at Slave 1. It's secondary because you're looking at Leia. On a side note, I don't like what Lucasfilm does with Wookies since. Chewie should be the template of what a Wookie is. What they look like. Now, they have evolved to look like Harry from Harry and the Hendersons. Cone Heads. He is not a sasquatch, but what else could we expect when you have people who are completely clueless about Star Wars, making Star Wars. Even prequel Wookies were too thick imo

When Boba Fett departs in silence as Leia looks on is great. No need for music. That’s how it should have been. It was perfect!

The original untampered versions are WAY better. These first time reactors on KZbin to the original trilogy still have not truly seen Star Wars if they haven’t seen the theatrical originals. Speaking of which, I really hope that someday they will be released. Thank you so much for providing this.

It always annoyed me that Leia and Chewie got so mad at Lando after he freed them. As he said, he really didn't have any choice. If he had defied Vader then the Empire would simply have blown Cloud City out of the sky in retaliation and murdered the several hundreds of innocent people there. Did the rebels believe they were more important than those people, the very people they're fighting to save from tyranny? As soon as he had an opening, Lando rescued them. He never wanted to betray them, he just had to weigh up the lives of two human, one Wookie and two droids against the lives of everyone else he was responsible for as Clod City's administrator and, imo, he made the only choice his conscience would let him. Five lives, two of them mechanical, against hundreds. What other choice could he have made?

Looks light-years better than that rubbish 4k disc bluray com format disc. bring on the grain structure and grain dislikers Sod off go and play with rubbish 4k discs. Film is the original medium having done projection at UCI and Warner Bros in the late of the last century when real cinemas existed not these rubbish 4k 8k cinemas that are soulless.

Modern cinemas with 'digital' projectors simply don't have the contrast ratio of film - it looks dull and lifeless.

Unfortunately the original video was taken down again. On the bright side, I downloaded all three movie files back in December so it's not completely lost media.

I didn't realize it at the time, but if the security code hadn't been changed, they probably would have left onLando's ship since there is only one door to the platform with the Millenium Falcon.

In the 2011 edition of empire, they put a window 🪟 right by where Leia, Chewie, 3PO, and R2 were at. The 1:41 mark. In the '96 edition, I don't think they put a window there. Kind of interesting how before there's no window, and in the 2011 edition, there's a window.
