Original Fallout Developers React to 11 Minute Speedrun

On this new episode of Devs React to Speedruns, we caught up with the original creators of Fallout 1, Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky from Obsidian Entertainment, to see what they think about speedrunners beating their games at record-breaking speeds. In this video, we’ll be watching two speedruns. First, a one-minute speedrun for the Fallout’s worst ending, and a playthrough that includes all of the game's Good Endings. I’ve been playing it recently as well, really delightful writing, an interesting pre rendered/claymation combo artstyle, fun character building and combat mechanics and a haunting atmospheric soundtrack come together to make something special

Same. Made me realize how much player choice the old fallouts had. Something as simple as being able to kill children (though you will get consequences) was cool. Also made me realize how stagnant Bethesda has been with the series but that's a diff convo

But they also said they didn't intentionally design a lot of the most iconic aspects, just threw in a bunch of stuff that looks cool, and that putting the vault doors underground was probably not discussed as part of the world building - it just happened to work out that way. Not to mention almost every IRL fallout shelter has an above ground entrance.

The voice line says "None of the Raider survivors are ever heard from again: the trigger for this ending is "Kill Garl + 8 other raiders" or "kill 13 raiders". The idea is that with severed numbers and no proper leadership, they just dispersed and vanished.

Joining the super mutants, they dip you in FEV and there’s a cut scene of super mutants killing everyone in Vault 13. First time a game ever made me feel guilty lol

Still the most amazing gameplay in the franchise. Only New Vegas among the non-classic games is more or less on the level. Fallout 4 is basically an average sci-fi shooter with no atmosphere.

Fallout is generally a shorter a game. It would see a lot of flak for this were if to release nowadays -- for all the wrong reasons. People are far too used seeing their games stretched by copypaste combat, loot and content traps, and the most generic fetchquest and world design ever. And devs seem desperate to justify their 70 Dollars pricetag anyhow.
