Original Xbox: Launch Titles vs Last Titles

Oh yeah, the OG is back!
On this LAUNCH vs LAST, we take a look at the original Xbox comparing some of its launch titles to its final games. The OG Xbox saw its release in North America in late 2001, and other regions in early '02. This episode pulls titles mostly from the NA launch, with an exception. The original Xbox was the first of its generation to receive a successor with the Xbox 360 releasing in 2005, and thus, it felt as though the system had lost its staying power a tad faster than the Gamecube and nowhere near the longevity we saw with the PS2. Many of the Xbox's final titles came out in early 2006, with very few releases in 2007 (mostly sports games and licensed stuff).

With the Shrek Xbox game a lot of the characters and enemies were designed by Todd Mcfarlane, the creator of Spawn so it probably explains why everything looks so weird. It also adds to the idea that the game was supposed to be something else before it got turned into Shrek

I know it’s weird to say… but the classic Xbox is probably my favorite console. It had so many unique games that felt home on it. Strangers Wrath, Armed and Dangerous, Fable, Kung Fu Chaos, Brute Force, Voodoo Vince, Jet Set Radio Future, Morrowind, Psychonauts, etc. It had such a unique personality that I personally feel was lost in the 360 and future consoles. Yes, that is 100% the nostalgia talking but it’s totally true to my brain. Edit: if you have PC-VR, you need to play the VRChat JetSetRadio Future world. Same graphics and gameplay… but in VR first person. It easily could be mistaken for an official release. It’s a dream come true.

I never experienced the original Xbox when it was new, but now that I actually know about games like Raze's Hell that were unique to the platform, I genuinely see what you mean by its unique personality; original Xbox exclusives tended to have this surreal edge that's hard to explain.

Marc Ecko's Getting Up was developed by The Collective. The combat was so good because they made the Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Indiana Jones & the Emperor's Tomb games. They also did the Star Wars Episode III game.

It's telling that a console back then could feature two graffiti-based games at the start and end of its life cycle...and both of them were quality titles. Nowadays most major publishers wouldn't touch such a concept with a ten-foot pole. It's a level of passion and risk-taking that you just don't see anymore in a mainstream gaming scene run by greedy, out of touch businessmen who are only concerned with safe investments, quarterly earnings and nickel-and-diming customers to death.

I remember as a kid the countless hours I put into Halo 1 and 2, Timesplitters 2, Mechassault 1 & 2, Voodoo Vince, Unreal Championship, Metal Arms Glitch in the System, Godzilla Save the Earth, and Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis Sure the PS2 and GameCube had more recognizable titles but the Xbox had some underrated bangers on it. I'd love to play Mechassault multiplayer again

THANK YOU for giving Ratatouille the shoutout it deserves, I don't see anyone talk about that game other than "Did you know this was the last game for the XBOX?". But it's so good, one of my all time favorites. Although I have heard that the PS3/XBOX360 version of the game, which is a completely different game than the Pc/Ps2/Gc/Xbox version, is not that great and might be a big reason why alot of people assume that the other version is bad aswell.

I was a PS2 kid and eventually got an OG Xbox, but that was only because both my uncles had Xbox's. Only way I got to play Halo/Halo2, SEGA GT/Jet Set, Project Gotham Racing, Magic The Gathering, ect. Those kind of games and even some being a bit better on the Xbox compared to the PS2 imo made me switch half way through owning my PS3.

Many games I didn't expect/know about, love the army men but I have those as well stored somewhere (interesting to see them up close too) but even still some stop motion with a video game look why not how creative. Halo is fine I do prefer the 360 version'd visuals more, the game is fun 1 & ODST are by favourites, the constant nostalgia focus when they don't really know how to make a stable game anyway and want modern business practices is a bit much. Black is awesome and so much fun. The burnout of shooters. The thing is for me Blinx 1&2, PGR1&2, Voodoo Vince (certain third party platformers like Dr Muto and racing games like R Racing Evolution or Auto Modellista) and Forza 1 is what I care about with the Xbox the most. Sega GT 2002 maybe but it isn't as interesting as the Dreamcast version with the car making options to create a custom one not liberty and all that like manufacturing one same as what Supercar Street Challenge does to me that is awesome I don't have to just use licenses cars and customise I can build one with the tools available. No idea if any game will ever do that again ever because licensed are so important. The console is good but most games I don't care for it I'm very particular on what I want to play even while branching out to arcade, hack n slash, visual novels, strategy RPGs and beat em up over time I'm still picking if it's theming or unengaging gameplay. The third parties and power was something for sure with the Xbox and still is today to the point I don't care to use the Xbox One or Series. I don't own an OG Xbox anymore and even then I only remember Scaler, Blinx 1, Voodoo Vince, Toejam and Earl 3 and Forza 1 that's about it. The rest I never owned but am curious about to pick up if I can. Besides whatever Japanese games for it. The attitude means nothing to me for Xbox but I do get the vibe for sure of the consoles even if I stick to shooters/racing on the console if I feel a need to Impulse Triggers on the Xbox One or just copies I see you give the console 360/One some use not sports or other attitudes and games that suit it as I couldn't care less they aren't for me.
