So few clarifications for the inept... Video outsourcing typically takes places over seas. Philippines, India, and Vietnam these countries are where most will outsource too. Why ? because of the cost and the dollars worth in their countries. The biggest issue is many think they are going to make 1000 bucks every video thats not going to happen. See the realization is video isnt needed its a bonus.. Agents pay anywhere from 300 to 1500 depending on a home. When you are doing 20 plus properties a week you have to find ways to maximize time... hence editors get paid by the video. They dictate the pricing they want. This particular has a flat fee. Ok this edit... We give them a shot list prior to the files. We provided them all files to allow them to make the best judgment call on how they will arrange them. We asked for revisions which were never delivered, we asked for the project source file which was never delivered. So after all of that its just sitting down and editing it yourself 1 hour or so scoring music 1 hour strategizing the edit 1 hour color grading and correcting and lastly the ramps, transitions and graphics go in If you aren't in this industry you likely wont understand the fact that what we want and what a client wants is two different things. You have to do what makes the person paying happy which an edit like this is not my typical styling

I outsource to an editor in Vietnam, both photos and video... my video editor has it back to me in about 3-6 hours. I am new to video, and dont have the skill set to edit the videos, and love the style my editor uses. we collaborated before hand of what I was looking for, then sent him some sample clips to make a sample and we tweaked that until it was exactly what I wanted. He also helped me, with settings, and ideas, and gives me tips after each video he edits for me.... Wouldn't be able to do video with out this at this time. Love the channel bro!

What happens to you it happens pretty often. It happened to me as a music producer, I ended up spending more time redoing and correcting than if I do the whole project myself...Tthe reason for that is that there is only 1 person in the world that would put the same love that you put in your own work, and that is you. Probably when you watch someone else's portfolio you are watching to their own work, not something they just did for the money. When I was watching the 1st video I noticed that no drone shots were used at all... so they probably didn't even look at the drone clips folder...I asume that you fed them the directions about the kind of look and also the duration of the video but if not, that is something you might want to consider if you ever hire someone else. Give them as much information as you can about what you want. Anyway, thank you for taking the time to share your experience. Best !!!

Looks like they might not be familiar with grading log footage? I've seen similar noise issues where people hand correct/grade and don't crush the shadows, or slap any LUT on it without doing a basic Rec 709 conversion first. Either way, helpful to see the A/B comparison (your edit's a huge difference).

I'm a novice editor but a long time tv tech having done studio and robotic camera for news and sports. With a discerning eye too, I found a lot of that outsourced editing was tough to watch. Obviously, your editing skills are at a very high level and once you reach this, it's impossible to settle for less. I just started my real estate video business and struggling with editing. Which is why I am definitely considering finding a highly skilled editor I can trust to do most of my editing. Especially as a dad who likes family time. Great video! 👍

right off the bat I would say - and Im posting this BEFORE I listened to your assessment.....1. NOISE ISSUES all over the place, not sure if they knew how to grade log footage but it looks like there was a lot of noise issues, first thing I noticed. 2. Drone shots last? which leads to 3. most of the video didnt feel like a Real estate video selling this property, it felt like an ad for an AirBnB to come and stay....too many long shots on things that wont be in the house - pots and pans, flowers, fountains, horses (granted new owners might have horses if they are buying a horse ranch.....but....I dont need to see the horses or the chickens in this real estate video. 4. Sound, OK its cool to add ambience, but I honestly didnt notice sound effects until the chicken and that felt really out of place. I would also say its too long? Most of the shots were repetitive and held too long and it made the video drag. My main complaint would be it didnt show off the property or the house enough. and the obvious....you can see the camera man in the mirror at one point.

Nice info video on why after hearing a customers desires...hand it over to someone who has no clue of their vision. I actually enjoyed both videos. Sure edit out the mirror captures as well as a little shorter clips yet both would sell just fine. Maybe it wasn't up to your specs, yet that's why you do it yourself. Inept vendor, or ill informed (no one told them)? I hope they see your video. Also I love your divisiveness. You tell it like it is. I used to do circuit design, and circuit board layout. I began a company doing that service when PCs were just introduced. Eventually India was a great draw for outsourcing - a primary one actually. We were close to doing it (my own company then), by recommendation from an ex-employer of mine, and during evaluation we realized we could not resolve design issues. If they totally messed up the design, even though we received the finished files, it would take at least twice as long to fix a serious problem as it would to just do it ourselves. We ended up hiring local contractors, and controlling them through supervision during the process. We called them consultants, but really we consulted with them to make sure it was done right. We ended up with great help, but we had to help them get there. We may have lost out on some profit, but we did not lose our customers. The contracts we received were of significant value, but what I like most about you is that you (like us then) value your customer even more. Good video once again.

Maybe not what the client wanted but I can tell you watching that video I didn't notice you in the camera, and I didn't notice the noise.. Not until you pointed it out I was looking at the house and what it was I wasn't looking at those specific things. And this is what I've always said about the public. All these differences that everyone freaks out about when it comes to 1080p, 4K, 8K noise, when you zoom in Most people almost all regular people who are looking at these videos. THEY DON'T CARE And they don't notice it... We know that you guys do.. But what's more important is if the people notice And almost always they never do... ;) But it is great that you're a consummate professional trying to get things perfect.. But it's really sad in a lot of ways because sometimes all these efforts are for not... But It does clean your conscience. And they have done these tests over and over again with regular people AB comparisons and really no one notices..

Great contrast comparison between a “good” vs “great” product that is ready for delivery to your client. Unless the outsourcing editor is willing to follow your criteria exactly- you will frequently be disappointed. By then, you are squeezed for time and it’s safer just to do the edits yourself. Thanks for teaching the difference.

Ken, you do a great job. But that doesn’t leave an excuse for a video editor not to do just as good of a job. It’s kinda what they are supposed to do. But once you pointed things out, then compared it to the version you did, the difference is very clear. I don't know that I would have been willing to edit the video for only $50 however. Keep up the good work.

Okay, I’ve now watched their edit and have not yet heard your thoughts or seen your edit. Here are my thoughts on the outsourced edit. First off, I need my eyes to readjust after being blasted by light. Taking the whole thing down at least a stop would make a huge difference for the better. The other global thing I didn’t like is how there’s a speed ramp on nearly every shot. Because of this, I feel like I don’t know what the house looks like, only that I might hit my head while orbiting a frying pan. Now to some of the individual shots… That is quite a poor choice for an establishing shot, especially since the first thing I see is the photographer in the door reflection. That shot would’ve been better a few shots in and trimmed to roll after you walked through the reflection. Noise, most egregiously on the pool table, and lastly I’m not really diggin the ice cream truck soundtrack, but that’s a personal choice. All in all I’m 100% with you. These videos are quick turnaround which means there will be some rough edges to them, but this was absolutely undeliverable.

Here’s a question. Cause I just went through the exact same thing recently. Do you pay them or not if you’re not going to use the product they created? Like having to pay for a shitty steak at a restaurant. It doesn’t happen. You don’t have to pay for the shitty steak. So what happens in this instance..pay or not?

You could perhaps write the $50 off as 'education expense' as it did teach you something and was a matter of you seeing what the 'competition' was doing. (I am NOT an accountant or tax specialist, so consult a professional. Just saying what I may do in this situation.)

Kudos man, you have some pretty high standards...which is commendable and appreciated. Gotta say though if I was spending $1M I could see what was for sale, but you're comments are 100% valid (too long, color shift, etc). Final video is soooo much better. And as a result I realized I'll probably never be a 'great' editor...☹️ I'd still buy the house with either video, but yours sold me...lol! Ugghh...4 hours...damn!

Here is my advice for outsourcing editing for real estate videos: 1. Don't hire someone completely new, last minute and expect them to know exactly what you and the client want. (I understand you were in a pinch and had to try) 2. Plan in advance, Post a job ad, request samples and provide test photos to be edited and submitted with application (if also hiring for photo editing) 3. Narrow down your candidates, offer 2-3 people a FULLY PAID test job. One that you also have time to edit yourself to deliver to client if the tests come back terrible. 4. Pay more. I pay $100 per video edit & $50 per photo batch. (keep in mind this is CAD) but this is also approx 30% of what I make for each service respectively. The upsells with floor plans, drone, agent hosting etc is how I make up my margins. 5. Hire and editor! Not a one-off job. Find someone who is onboard for semi-consistent long term work who you can offer X amount of hrs per week to incentivise them to adapt to your style of editing and have them go through several of your videos to help get that down pat. Coach along the way. I mean this all respectively - but this helped me find a QUALITY editor to take the majority of my editing work off my plate and was a game changer for scaling. . . and my mental health. Worth the investment fo the test edits etc. All the best

I think a lot of what I pick up on are personal preference here, but didn't like the music and I feel like a lot of the sound effects were overdone. I thought the color grading on the drone footage was horrible, and on some of the inside shots the editor did not edit out shots with your reflections in the mirror at least twice. There also seemed to be something strange going on with the color on the pool table, but I can't be sure if that was the edit or not (guess I'll see when I watch your video!)

I was surprised by the low $50 charge until I saw the clarification about the overseas outsourcing. It would be interesting to send video to several different outsourcers, at different price levels, to see how each does versus their cost. Besides the other issues pointed out... the color grading (if there was any) on the outsourced edit of the drone footage was a mess. If I had a company selling property on a regular basis, receiving that original edit would have me looking elsewhere for this service.

Story Time: If you want something done right, do it yourself! COMMENTS ON VIDEO BELOW Honestly though. If OrigionaldoBo called me up and said hey, can you edit my video? I would shit myself. Then I would watch 10 or more hours of his videos. If he has specific LUTs that he uses, I would need those for color grading so that it matches his other videos. COMMENTS ON VIDEO: I stopped at 7:40 to put in my comments prior to hearing your take. Let's see if I was right. 4:39 Dissolve transitions. You use the swipe transitions to go from exterior to interior. 4:44 speed ramp hell! hard cuts from one space or position to another. Needs to slow down. 5:27 what is wrong with the exposure. I would think we would have adjusted things so the windows wouldn't look so blown out. Also speed ramping from one room to another. I would have broken them down show different rooms. 5:30 Yeah that master bathroom is amazing!!! 6:06 What kind of dissolve was that?? You never use that. 7:00 Reaching into my drawer for some Dramamine! Does my chair have a seatbelt??? 7:12 looks like it was shot in log and then no color grading and thrown into production WTF! Here are things I would have done to be a little better: I probably would have gotten a pull up shot of the driveway or approach to the home in the beginning, to round out the video. Use a side swipe from exterior to interior. Get a shot of the running faucet in the kitchen. Close ups of the appliance brand names. No SPEED RAMPS! Or at least not so many. Rooms are each separate shots, no going from one room to another. Post production exposure and color grading so the lighting can color carries though the whole film. These video are not meant to show every square inch of a home. It is like a good burlesque dance. It is enough to make you want to throw some money at it. Call the realtor and book a showing. MY TAKE ON THE DOBO VIDEO: I guess the customer wanted fast, so while smoother for sure, it isn't my taste. But if the customer is happy that is what counts. Color and exposure are much much better. It seems like you bounced between the pool and equine area to the front of home a couple of times, so it felt a little redundant. I probably would have given each area a little more time, and then move to the next area. Maybe mix in the aerials going from the front of the home to the pool then to the barn. I know this video was edited probably at 2 am with you cussing up a storm at having spent money on an edit that sucked.

For me before I watch yours I had a few things i didn't like. 1 way too long. 2 it looked grainy in a lot of spots. 3 No description at all. 4 Me personally I didn't like some of the transitions, but that's my personal taste. 5 Goes along with number 4. The transitions that were used took away from the flow. Again my personal taste. 6 goes along with 3 no mention of the reality company or listing agent. Otherwise it was ok. Granted these are things the realtors I work with expect. I by no means have the quality that you do or the equipment to do really great quality editing, but the realtors I work with are satisfied so I guess that's what counts.

Your edit was night and day different (better) that the outsourced version. I'm going to assume you shoot in a flat profile. They didn't seem to know how to manage that footage which is probably why there were odd colors and noise. Either way theirs was flat. This is why I always just edit my videos myself. I'm slow but normally get them exactly how I want them.

I dont know I agree with the sentiment here but I’d find it hard to edit someone’s video for $50. It wasn’t good agreed but at minimum if it took you 4 hrs to cut we can assume you’re a “senior” editor in this situation so an intermediate would take longer like 8hrs lets say. I work in vfx outsourcing so the wages may be higher but lets say 40-50/hr $200-$400 seems fair for a good, and I mean a GOOD edit. So not knocking anything I wouldn’t outsource this stuff wither unless like a Bardwell I had an editor I’m familiar with. The amount of notes I give on a shot in a day is insane when its outsourced overseas its brutal.
@OriginaldoBo
@OriginaldoBo 2 жыл бұрын
Read the pinned comment I further explained. The editor was based in the Philippines. The only thing they do is real estate. $50 to them is 2600 pesos essentially and cost of living compared to the states is relative. 1200-800 there can last a month. They work in teams. What I’ve noticed is many don’t understand this business and this particular genre in regards to video. You aren’t going to make money editing but as teams they do.
