The symbol of the smoking snake is from WWII. Someone said the it would be easier to see a snake smoking than to see Brazil entering in WWII. When Brazilian soldiers were sent to fight in Italy, they decided to put that symbol in their uniforms and they said "A cobra está fumando": "the snake is smoking".

Fun fact. The name of the most popular brazilian sweet, the Brigadeiro, means literally Brigadier. The sweet was created and named after Brigadier Eduardo Gomes (he was from brazilian airforce but anyway xD), as a way to support his presidential campain in 1945. He lost the election, but the sweet was a huge success among people since that time.

When the second world war was going on, there was a lot of pressure for Brazil to enter the war. But our leaders didn't want to (we had good relations with Germany) and the Brazilian people would say: it's easier for a snake to smoke a pipe than for us to enter this war. So when Brazil entered the war or military adopted the snake smoking a pipe.

Brazil never started a war, but never lost one either. We've been invaded several times by countries including France and Holland (some may argue we weren't Brazil yet, as it happened before independence, but we were already a mix of Portuguese, Africans and Indigenous, so, true Brazilians in my opinion). We are a pacifist nation, but a fierce defensive power.

Brazil obliterated Paraguay with the help of Argentina. The thing is, Paraguay was trying to surrender, Argentina had retreated but the Brazilian Army kept going and killed 1/3 of Paraguay's population. (almost all male population, living woman and female children). There's some debate about who started the conflict. The "Ponte da Amizade" was a way to celebrate the peace (build almost 150 years later). (pq eu to respondendo em inglês se claramente eu sei que és brasileiro? hauhauhuaa)

@@RaphaelLeite I don't know about Paraguay trying to surrender. Maybe the whole country wanted to. But Solano Lopez didn't, and as supreme dictator, he was the only one who could officially do it, and he never did, he had to be killed for the war to end. Kind of like Hitler. Whole germany wanted to surrender. They were sending teens and old men to the front, but until the Fuher himself gave the order, they had no choice but to fight.

@@pedroc3948 yeah, the people, not the leadership. But, Argentina and the surrounding countries were like "ok, let's pause and talk" Brazil in the other hand just "nope, he wants war, we are giving war". Hello, im just a random in the BR Army. Explaining a bit about the uniforms: The Iron Blue Beret is mainly for Academy Military / Students, the ones that are still in formation. The rest uses the standart Olive-Green Beret, there are variations as; Red (Grená) for the Paratroopers; Black for the Cavalry (tanks); Light Blue/Sky Blue are the ONU (United Nations Organization), the ones that use this are the ones that went into deployment outside the country working with UNO. Camouflage Beret, for the Jungle troops. Grey Beret, for the Mountain Infantry troops. Beige Beret, for the equivalent to the Airborne's, we call the Aeromóvel. Ultramar-blue Beret, for the Army Aviation. Also, newer standart uniform models have the rank removed from the neck and placed on the chest as you said, and the more formal ones, as you seen with the Social Shirts, still on the Trapezius/above the shoulder region for the Officers, and on Shoulders from Warrant Officers to Soldiers (The enlisted ones). And their Branch on the necks More about the uniforms you can find in our RUE - Regulamento de Uniformes do Exército Brasileiro. Main Weapons: Knife, personal or given by the Army itself Rifle: FN FAL 7,62x51mm Rifle: IMBEL IA2 Both 5,56 NATO or 7,62x51mm - But these are relatively new, substitutes of the Old Belgium rifles and the newer models made by IMBEL TOO. Pistol: Mainly the original Berretta M9 or the ones made by IMBEL, same model And many more, like FN MAG Machine gun, 7,62x51mm Mortars, missile launchers, Shotguns, grenade launchers, etc etc etc.

Imbel IA2 is Brazil's official weapon. National production. This weapon has versions 5.56 and 7.62. It is very resistant to water, forest, desert environments, etc., because Brazil has several biomes. IA2 is a weapon inspired by the AK47, but modern.

Former army officer here, did 4 years in an armored unit in Rio Grande do Sul. The main service rifle, at least here in the south, is still the old FN FAL, chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO, but you can find 5.56mm IA2 rifles in some units, specially officers corps and the academy. Our uniform is patterned after the old BDU, and printed in an older pattern called Lizard or French Lizard pattern, but 2024 is a transition year to a more modern, ACU cut uniform and coyote boots. The sky blue beret shown in the video is assigned to troops in UN peacekeeping missions, while the royal blue beret with the snake badge is a limited use beret for WWII veterans, so it's not widely available. The standard issue berets are OD, black for armored troops and crimson for airborne, as well as a few other special issue colors. Ngl, I miss my army days, but there's just so much to improve. Brazil still uses a conscription based system, so every male citizen has to enlist the year they turn 18 for a compulsory one year service. Most units don't do much more than daily upkeep, and there are a few training exercises every year.

Hello friend, my first time on your channel. I'm Brazilian, not military, but I'm enthusiastic about the topic. Your approach is really cool, the institutional video is very well designed, I already knew it, naturally. I'd just like to say that although courage and bravery in combat are essential virtues of any force, I believe that beyond that, in Brazil there is a human value of protection and support (for relief) that inspires us. Since rivalry and conflict aren't in our nature, we can collectively direct our energy toward a parallel principle. As the army motto suggests, "Strong arm, helping hand", certainly something to be proud of. In addition to honoring our history and our allies. PS.: I will pay more attention to your general content. Good job friend.

The uniforms of the Brazilian Army changed to another, more modern one and without these rank markings. They are now on the chest of the jacket. The camouflage remains the same. There are also the caatinga troops (a Brazilian biome more like a desert climate with little vegetation, drought), which has khaki and brown tones. The boots changed to green, brown and khaki depending on the type of troop. The standard armament that will replace the FN FAL will be the IMBEL IA-2 in 5.56mm and 7.62mm calibers.

Hi, ppl have addressed below abou the rifle, but I want to add this: the MD (MD97) project is still happening very slowly and the intent is to upgrade the belgian FAL that are still on duty, By now it might have been terminated, someone in the military could provide more accurate info on this. IMBEL is a state company and subsidiary of CBC which is an ammo manufacturer. They also own TAURUS now. Imbel was tasked to create a military rifle incorporating more up to date technologies like polimer and started distributing Imbel IA2 around 2010, maybe. 5.56 for the army and 7.62 for the Navy. But this last info might be more complex, not that simple.
