Not to make anyone go into shock or get depressed but I do remember a movie where Andy played a part of where he was a manager of some sort of piece of land and killed one of his workers and in the end of the movie he was sitting in an electric chair and they put the head piece on him and then the movie was over without showing the execution.

That was Murder in Coweta County co-starring Johnny Cash. It was based on true story. He did an amazing job playing the villain. He also gave equally impressive performances playing the bad guy in Savages and Gramps.

I'm glad he stayed longer. Some of my favorite episodes were in Season Four. It's possible that Jim Nabors wouldn't have gotten a spin-off. There would have been enough episodes for syndication. But the show's impact wouldn't have been as strong. Many of us may have preferred ending the show after the fifth season. Don Knotts would have probably still had a good film career. After all, he did The Incredible Mr. Limpet while still on the series. Maybe Warner Brothers would have given him a longer deal instead of Universal.

Andy Griffith can't play a serious role? What about A Face in the Crowd (1957)? He was supurb in that film, and there was nothing funny about that character. He deserved at least a nomination for an Oscar. If any of you Andy Griffith fans have never seen it, I highly recommend it. Often shown on TCM. Quite a departure from The Andy Griffith Show.
