In the Nordic Sagas, there is mention of a Disablot (sacrifice to the Disir, the female ancestors) and an Alfablot (sacrifice to the ancestors or possibly the male ancestors) that took place in autumn. Winter Nights (full moon that lands roughly in October) was the beginning of the new year.

The only name for the Hyades that I've found in Nordic languages is "Ulf's Keptr" or "The Wolf's Mouth". Which could refer to Skoll and/or Haiti. The wolves who swallow the sun and the moon in Norse Mythology at the start of Ragnarok. Or a reference to Fenrir, another wolf who swallows Odin and kills him during the battle at Ragnarok.

Here is a hint: 1755 Lisbon earthquake Lisbon earthquake occurred on November 1, 1755 at 9:20 am. It turned Lisbon, Portugal's capital, into ruins, and became one of the most devastating and deadliest earthquakes in history, claiming around 90,000 people in 6 minutes. The underground tremors were followed by a fire and a tsunami, which caused particularly many troubles because of Lisbon's coastal location. The earthquake occurred on the morning of November 1 on a Catholic holiday - All Saints' Day. According to the preserved descriptions, the earthquake lasted from three and a half to six minutes, causing huge cracks in the ground as wide as five meters, separating the city center from the rest of the land. The survivors rushed to the seemingly safe docks and saw that the water receded, exposing the sea floor with ship debris. Minutes after the earthquake, a huge tsunami covered the harbor and the city center, rushing up the Teju River. Two more waves followed him. Candles lit in homes and churches across the city for All Saints Day were toppled off, allegedly sparked a fire that escalated into a firestorm that raged through the city for hours. Lisbon was not the only Portuguese city to suffer from this disaster. In all the southern areas of the country, in particular in the Algarve province, the destruction was colossal. The thrills were felt all over Europe as far as Finland, and in North Africa. A tsunami of up to 20 meters has hit the coast of North Africa and the islands of Martinique and Barbados in the Caribbean Sea. A three-meter tsunami caused destruction to the south coast of England.

Randall, I read somewhere that the one of the oldest tales in humankind was one of the Pleiades stars falling to Earth - approx 100k years ago. I believe whatever number we can see with the naked eye is less than we could see 100k years ago, when in reality one star has aligned behind another. Now we know there a many stars in that cluster but ancient stories say we had an impact from an heavenly body at that time. sorry I cannot remember where I read it but it was something that fascinated me because of stories being passed down without script or document, purely recalled by generation to generation by memory- very heartening

Anyone know what the Japanese festival of the dead is called? I live in Japan and Obon is usually pointed to their festival of the dead, but it's in August. There's a national holiday on Nov. 3rd, but that's Emperor Meiji's birthday. Could it be the gods going to Izumo Taisha to which he's referring to?

Imagine the desperation these people recording these events felt trying to make sure people knew what was coming. All these signs saying 'he' will return and the end of the world is near. Regardless of whether we're paying or will pay attention to these warnings, it will probably come and then we'll have to begin the process of documenting for future people. Maybe it takes 12000 years for us to find the signs of the past, just to lose it again. TO THE MOON!

Curious what others think on something. The constellations, do they have a real significance/meaning in the grand scheme of things? Other than using as direction or navigational points through space from a particular point? What I mean is other than from our perspective on earth are they still the same constellations? The distance between each star that makes up a particular constellation is massive. Attached to them are names and figures based on our own limited frame of reference. I feel it belongs to the time when Earth was the center of everything. If on a alien world in a random point in space and looked to the night sky would you see Orion?
@infiniteinfinity5233
@infiniteinfinity5233 2 жыл бұрын
the constellations come from nearby stars. if you went to the opposite side of the galaxy where there are different stars, then you'd have a completely new night sky with different constellations. that doesn't mean that the constellations don't have any meaning, it's just that they are meaningful to us specifically because they are our constellations.

@jacobsmith7281
@jacobsmith7281 2 жыл бұрын
Impact craters are almost always spherical. The speed of impact is on the orders of km per second. Angle of approach mostly isn't relevant. Think of the angle of approach of a nuclear warhead. It doesn't matter. The energy is usually being released on impact in an explosion, caused by the release of energy due to the rapid deceleration of the impactor.

The "Bull of Heaven" appears in the Epic of Gilgamesh. However, Gilgamesh and Enkidu kill the Bull of Heaven. The gods are angry that the Bull of Heaven has been killed." From the sounds of it, sub-Saharan Africa would have been mostly spared from the northern hemisphere debauchery that took place. As a biologist (admittedly, a dumb one), this could also explain the genetic diversity seen in sub-Saharan Africa, where we see quite high genome-wide diversity, indicating a large population with lots of gene flow (no big population bottlenecks). Outside of SSA, we see much less diversity which indicates a population bottleneck. According to conventional hypothesis, this is a result of multiple migrations from Africa over ~100k years, or so, which is certainly plausible, but I am personally skeptical because of my bias toward the YDIH. What needs to happen is an in-depth analysis of mutation events (genetic differences) between SSA and non-SSA people, looking for a more subtle bottleneck than what we know likely exists already (bottleneck around 70ka likely from volcanic eruption). The resolution we have on the genome is becoming higher every day, so it’s my suspicion that if the YDIH is true, signs of a bottleneck (with dating) will be known in the coming years.

Stars. You calibrate by noting what constellation is behind the moon when the full moon is in the middle of the sky. That constellation being in the middle of the sky marks midnight for the next month. Then you can improve on this by interpolating/extrapolating how the full moon's position would move through the stars if the moon did not change phases. (or as we moderners would say, if the moon was always opposite the sun instead of orbiting around us once a month)
