That’s the correct pronunciation of Cupar. In Scotland we don’t say “County Fife”. (County of Fife would be more accurate.) With the exception of County Durham, all counties in Great Britain were shires. Fife was called Fifeshire in some documents but never nowadays. It’s also called the Kingdom of Fife, sometimes just “the Kingdom,” though it can’t have been a kingdom for over a 1000 years. There is a Gordon in Aberdeenshire as well as Berwickshire. I enjoy these videos even though I have no connection to Appalachia! It’s interesting how names we think of as Scottish, Irish or English are of Norman origin.

Thanks, Paul, I should know your excellent points. I taught at the University of Dundee, lived in Dunning, and earned a PhD in historical geography from the University of Glasgow. I am about to embark on a series about the formation of a Protestant scots community in Ireland. I hope you stay tuned for those videos.

Khatoon, it's good to hear from you. I hope all is well with you and yours. You did a good job of summarizing content. Here's a bit of instruction for you: put commas around a person to whom you are speaking. You earn an A today!

Over here there's a saying , He or she is " As keen as Mustard " . It means a person who is very enthusiastic , quick and smart . Mustard being a sharp spicy flavour , and Keen a sharp edged blade . Btw , Berwick is pronounced Berrick over here , said without the W .

@@BarryVann , I'm glad to offer a few nuggets of local info, it's interesting that you lived in Scotland . Of course you'll realise having lived here that pronunciation and dialects are pretty arbritary things , especially in Britain where within a 30 miles radius people can struggle to understand one anothers speech , so it's no reflection on your knowledge , just a peculiarity of Britain , for instance , Lerwick is pronounced as written .

@@BarryVann Barry- I though that to till after the DNA got back and said the biggest % came from England - no Scottish or Irish at all.
@baronvann13143 жыл бұрын
@@jameshanna2550 James, DNA can be diluted over time. Sadly, surnames don't always follow genetics. Consider that one would have about .75% of a 4th great grandparent's DNA. That makes it a challenge to detect.
