--- Description---
A Story of An Irish Sept: Their Character and Struggle to Maintain Their Lands, by Nottige C. Macnamara (a member of the Sept), 1896.
Part I: Origins
In chapter 1 we learn about the origins of our main sept, the Macnamara's of Co. Clare. From the author's perspective, the people of west Ireland share a direct genetic connection to the Basque's, and this has been suggested by later researchers. We will also learn about the "Celtic invasions" of Ireland, the nature of the Celtic people, and how these differed from that of the Fir Bolg's whom the author assumes descent from.
--- Background---
"Sept" is the word used in early Ireland to refer to a large family kin group, usually a collection of families with various surnames although descending from a single great common ancestor.
The smaller kin groups were referred to as "fine" (pr. finna or finny), and these were categorised in degree of closeness of relatives who shared a common grandfather (gel-fine), great-grandfather (derb-fine), or great-great-grandfather (iar-fine). A sept was essentially a much wider kin grouping that comprised of several fine who shared a common distant great ancestor - who served as a progenitor of the tribe, so to speak.
The book is authored by N.C. Macnamara, a fine that descends from the Dalcasian sept, the same sept which Brian Boru descended from.

In chapter 2 we'll dive into the nature of early Irish society under the Brehon Laws, so watch this space!

Ulster has a fascinating history that extends way beyond the last 30-80 years of devastating conflict. It was the lands that CuChulain protected in the Táin, the Royal seat of Emain Macha, and, most people fail to realise, the last of Gaelic Ireland to fall to the colonisers. Mighty people up north.

The earliest records I can find of My Great Grandfather x4 in America is 1764, George X, father to George Sader, father to Josiah Francis, father to Charles Otto, father to Charles Richard, who is father to Me. Ended up settling in the southern tip of Illinois between the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. Supposedly instructed/directed there as that area was already known. Many ancient relics have been found there, investigate Henry Hubbards work-several documentaries on YT

I've kind of found your channel and I really appreciate it. I'm trying to understand my own ancestral cultural history. Have studied indigenous cultures and each one of them encourages people to learn their histories. I have many learning disabilities and so it's hard for me to read these histories or lore in print. So thank you very much for doing this

Very fixated on what was considered science of the era in which it was published; that is, phrenology and the late 19th century comparisons of races and nations, especially within Europe. You can see MacNamara reacting to what other English and German authors were saying, as he uses such methods to defend the honor and history of his own people. While now all such thinking is long discredited, as you said at the start, this has value as a relic of it's own day. It's an amazing thing to see the Irish grapple with a history which is both heroic juxtaposed with military and political subjugation. This combination of a society broken, but still clinging on -and of a distant glorious past but keenly remembered- is I think why those in Ireland and of Irish descent wrestle with such a love of history.

I'm so interested in all of this history of Ireland, but my attention span these days would be unlikely to be able for this amount of dedicated and intense research. Thank you for making these videos and for your effort to clarify that it was not the English or the British (people) that invaded Ireland and that it was initially the Anglo-Norman Nobility (basically just Normans taking on the identity of English) and latterly the British Nobility (who were essentially the descendants of those same Normans and so effectively still Normans). I was born in England and raised as English/British by society (not my fault) but raised by my family and local community as a typical Merseyside kid from a typical Merseyside family and being raised in a Merseyside family you are more likely than not to be of Irish descent and indeed I am third generation Merseysider on both my Mother's and Father's side of the family and part Welsh on my Mother's side too (75% Irish 25% Welsh). Although we in Merseyside tend to have our own identity these days we are still very much aware of our Irish roots and proud of them too but we do not learn of Irish history in our curriculum at school since it is all decided in Westminster and so it is really important for folk like myself to be able to find such in depth content on my ancestral past as if it were up to the British Educational System then I wouldn't learn anything of it at all. I think many people forget when they think of All Brits are Bastards that many of us Brits are actually Irish that were born in Exile (swap Irish for Scots and Welsh were appropriate) so we aren't all wicked evil English/Brits with an unhealthy obsession with conquering the World.

Thank you so much for this. It is amazingly interesting and I look forward to the second part. I wish at the end you'd given a bit more of a critique on what was mentioned in the literature, and as you mentioned at the beginning the context that it was written in. I found the points about how Germanic culture was superior to that of the Celt incredibly biased, but then I guess that was to be expected. I've not watched your channel for a while, but I wonder what the latest genetic studies have to bring over the Basques and the Irish from County Clare, and especially the Arran Islands. Is this link confirmed. I might have to rewatch some videos around this after this to reacquaint myself with this topic because as far as I can remember there wasn't that much evidence at that time, which is not to say there won't be any in the future. I have to admit I didn't know that much about County Clare, except that it was quite a harsh and barren landscape, my ancestors being from County Mayo on one side and County Armagh on the other, but this is all very fascinating stuff. I was hoping this might be about the O'Hanlons, but thank you again for the most amazing video on a very interesting topic. I look forward to the next one!!!

Hey Matt, thanks for your detailed comment. You've given me the idea to post a short addendum between this and the next chapter. I'll go into more details there but I can say there has been more recent research evidencing the link between Basque and early Irish. I included a couple of screenshot of newspaper articles, and I recall watching a documentary years ago on RTE that came to the same conclusion. As for the Saxons. It's always a tough pill to swallow when it places your own people as the underdog, but we can keep in mind the roots of the author and how he had little reason to bias the Germanic or Saxon people, I take him to be pretty matter of fact here but also keep in mind he was writing as a subjugated people still under the rule of the English Crown. Thanks again for the input as this will help make the future videos even better!

@@BrehonAcademy Glad to be of help!!! They say, and it's very true, that history is often written by the victors, and good historical research often means trying to find this party outside evidence to really get to the actual truth, away from any bias or exaggeration. In the absence of that you have to take what is there, but look at it with a skeptical mind, there will be truth underlying what is written, but examining the context of the time any evidence was written in can't be ignored. Even in the myths of ancient Ireland there will be some truth, but also a lot of exaggeration, not just because of the time they are written down, but because they came from an oral tradition of storytelling and the original story will have been embellished as it was passed down from generation to generation. They are very intriguing though. As for the DNA link to the Basque Country I think I saw that somewhere not too long ago, but I'm not sure if it was positive, negative, or just raised more questions. I think it may have been the latter, but I'm not sure. I think there may have also been links to the Galicians in North West Spain as well, but that was probably a link between the Celts as I think there evidence for Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany, and Galicia and that they were all Celts and traded with each other. If you can dig anything up about this it'd be really interesting to see. If I can remember where I saw this I'll post a link, it may even have been on here, I'll have to check. It's so interesting hearing about the culture of ancient Ireland. I'm English, but have, from different sides of my family, O'Hanlon (Co. Armagh) and Horan (Co. Mayo) blood in me and have been doing a lot of research into my family history, and traveled all over the beautiful island of Ireland the year before this pandemic hit and it is an amazing place with amazing people and history that I can't wait to hear more!!!

You mentioned the veneti and then said vercingetorix was the last leader to stand on mainland Europe. There is a book called “the tribe within” that uses strict DNA, together with known archaeological history and found that the veneti came and seeded Ireland, Scotland and Wales in 53b.c. Or around that.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate this presentation, and I know exactly how much work has gone into it. I've undertaken a similar project narrating a book with images ("Rulers of Evil"), but it's on the history of the Jesuits (whose founding members were Basque). This study has led me to research the O'Carroll clan of County Offaly, since John Carroll SJ, first archbishop of the US, and his cousin Charles Carroll of Carrollton, only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence, played such important roles in the founding of this country. Now I'm diving deep into Irish history and your channel is a Godsend. Thank you again...kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHvEnWengLuapJo

The Basque and the Irish have some commonalities even to this day. Their diaspora populations are the highest out of all ethnic groups and people of Basque or Irish ancestry are almost evenly distributed across the USA. Canadians have much more Irish ancestry whereas Central and South Americans have much more Basque ancestry. Masaman has a nice, short video about the Basque. The second half compares the Irish with the Basque: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2fNqqyJf7Z9iJo
