Orihime Inoue: The Princess | BLEACH: Character Analysis

This is the second video in a series of videos titled THE ROAD TO ICHIGO, leading up to my Ichigo analysis. In this video I go through everything you need to know about the very misunderstood Orihime Inoue. She is a very close ally of Ichigo, and is one of the first characters that we learn more about during BLEACH. Orihime also featured in the oneshot of BLEACH which featured a draft early concept of Orihime's character. In this video I go over what was established and carried over from this BLEACH one-shot, and how Orihime's character has grown and changed throughout the course of the series. Heavy emphasis is also place onto her relationship with Ichigo, and how she helps not only herself but Ichigo grow as a person.

@@mia3033 I believe that is because Rukia is the favorite of many - I don't know the quantity but it must be very big - Bleach fans. Rukia appears as the funny one with her drawings of rabbits, Orihime is funny to be hers. Rukia is almost a tsundere, or something like that, which a lot of anime fans love. Orihime would be something closer to the dandere. Rukia orders. Orihime welcomes you. One is the big sister that everyone has or should have, the other is a mother that everyone has or should have. @@mia3033 On Orihime's first appearance, I realized that she looked like Ichigo's mother. Not just because of the orange hair. But the way a mother has with her son was what Orihime had with Ichigo. She was young, so it was noticeable that her feelings would be more of love than simple affection. This explains - at least for me - why Inoue did so well as a mother and housewife in the last chapter of Bleach. It was something about her being, her soul, a representation of the many gifts that women have. I think another character that represents this very well is Juria in Hokuto no Ken.

That's why I like the characters in Bleach. They are simple, not simpleton. They have the cliché of the other anime characters, but they weren't cliched. They are easy-to-understand characters - one of the factors I attribute to Tite Kubo's design - and with which anyone can identify. Who has never dreamed of or had a (girl)friend like Orihime, for example?

She could be much more relevant and powerful, but the author decided she, as a woman, would just be left to be the support of the group and never be able to fully defend herself in battle, always needing someone else to do the actual fighting while she just heals their wounds

She sticks to her humanitarianism and helps others no matter how bad things get or are. She's usually dismissed as useless but this is DEFINITELY not the case. The fact that she saves the lives of even enemies while refusing or ignoring Shinigami orders not to just adds to it. Oh and there's her willingly going into dangerous places or battle only to save lives so yes, she is someone to admire for her morals and life saving pacifism.

A young girl from a nameless clan competing to at least be on par with her peers, who all happen to be special. She's legit the underdog. We could've had her learn the gates to keep up, but be bested by Lee and have that actually be a barrier for her. Not because Lee's extremely talented, but because he's put in the work where she didn't. We could even establish that Lee likes her, but that she still likes Sasuke. Maybe have Gaara body Sasuke and have Lee actually beat Gaara, showing how far hardwork took him. Lee, this apparent nobody, with even less talent than herself and lacking ninjutsu and genjutsu, beat a guy that beat Sasuke. Sasuke, the same guy she wants to be as strong as post developing away from her crush. (Not fully.)

They didn't like her because she didn't kick enough ass. People both misunderstood her nature and the strength of her ability. Her ability was great for healing because she was able to reject phenomena. But it was useless in battle. Her shield wasn't strong enough against strong opponents until the Lost Agent Arc and The TYBW. Due to Tsubaki being her only means of attack and her kind nature, she was never gonna be able to inflict harm onto others, enemies included.

Honestly people gave her such a hard time about not being a superhuman fighter like Ichigo or the shinigami but like, the girl gets kidnapped, imprisoned and tortured and still manages to keep holding onto her belief in her friends and her compassion. That is not easy to do. There's lots of ways to be strong and I think Orihime was always a great representative of that. She deserved to be with Ichigo because she finally got the loving family she always wanted.

They surely are wrong. Tite does set those canons from the start. That toxic fans should know that Renji&Rukia daughter's physical appearance has been in the Author's mind when He created the girl name Senna from Bleach 1st Movie "Memories of Nobody". Ichika Abarai copies Senna's look. Tite tells it by himself in one of his interview (i forget). So, He never forces it.

I wanted more moments of them just being friends (I want Ichigo chilling out with his friends more in general, anyway), but there's no way you can't say they didn't enjoy each other's presence, and I loved that for them. Orihime liked Ichigo long before him being her hero came in, and would have befriended him earlier if the opportunity came up or she gathered her guts to do so, and while Ichigo may have been a bit confused, Orihime's easy for him to get along with, and they'd have gotten closer over time. They genuinely care about each other, and it's distinct even canonically. Ichigo doesn't treat or view Rukia and Orihime the same way as they're not mere love interests, but distinct people with different relationships to him. It's rather refreshing as while the narrative can make them feel generic, you can tell that Ichigo himself regards them more genuinely. Orihime is a calming presence for him, like Chad, and someone's who's company he can chill and enjoy, and Orihime is someone who delights in just being with him, romantic or otherwise. It's so lovely. Them having such great Friendship potential and would have enjoyed being each other's friends regardless is not a common thing for Shounen het ships - so many try to rush to romance from the girl's end from nothing, and the dude's end barely notices her for more than a damsel or fanservice. It's one of the things I adore about Ichigo and Orihime in particular.

No sensible person is arguing that Orihime's relationship with Ichigo was "forced". HOWEVER, what you cannot argue is that it was one sided, meaning we knew Orihime's feelings for Ichigo, but not the other way around in the romantic sense. We know Ichigo cares for Orihime, but you can say that he cares about all his friends. The moments people argue that he had were special with Orihime, you can make the same argument for his relationship with Rukia. If anything one COULD argue they had a brother/sister relationship (just like you could argue that with his relationship with Rukia), but I digress. Ultimately the problem was that we never saw Ichigo see Orihime in the romantic light, and if you were on the opposite side of the fence it caught you completely off guard. For me personally I don't find her as an interesting character, that's my thing.

He didn't have much of a personal relationship with Orihime on his own end for the longest, and we didn't see them just spending their own time together for the sake of it to really see his own feelings for her outside of battle. I would have appreciated more of that, honestly. I also just think seeing how Ichigo would fall for someone would be beautiful, but in general, a lot of his personal feelings towards his loved ones tends to come out in battle and not for the sake of his own reflection during downtime. I would have loved him being introspective without the looming threat of death for once.

What I always loved about Orihime is how much emotional depth and compassion she displays for everyone she comes across. Despite her traumatic childhood and losing all of her family she still loves and cares hard for people and that is a beautiful quality. And although she’s cheerful and optimistic she still has a maternal wisdom to her that just makes her an all around great character. She’s perfect for Ichigo because while he takes care of everyone he has someone who he can share his burdens and in turn will be there for him as a support system. She’s one of my favorite anime characters of all time and the definition of beautiful inside and out

It is not correct, it is a bad translation because in the RAW or in the Japanese manga it does not say that, Rangiku calms him down and reassures him and tells Hime that it is good that he faces his flaws. Inoue has always been so special to me. During my teenage years this girl resonated with me so much. Even now, watching this video the memories are coming back to me and suddenly I remember and know what kind of person I should strive to be. Also, it's so annoying when the audience values anime characters by their strength. Nobody has to be strong to drive the plot further. Plot and characters' inner state are the only things that should matter.

I wrote an answer on Quora defending Orihime. I feel her character is very misunderstood by the fandom. If you look at her more closely, she is a great character. She has abilities which are godlike, and has been shown to defend attacks from even Yhwach. She may not be much of a fighter, but her abilities get stronger with conviction. Plus, she has a depressing backstory. She is not a useless character and the whole annoying factor is something I never understood. Great video. You're one of the few people who understand Bleach and Orihime's character.

Orihime had an interesting dynamic with Ulquiorra. Both seemed to be the complete opposite of one another like night and day and always seemed to clash with eachother's beliefs. Through this she made Ulquiorra experience and feel emotions that he was otherwise incapable of having. It's a shame it was cut short cause I believe something interesting could have really bloomed between them.

I think Inoue's biggest problem was that she kept trying to force herself to fill the role of a fighter, when she was already a top-tier support to begin with. Supports are crap when it comes to fighting...but when it comes to buffing/healing/providing additional defense to the fighters, they shine so bright they sometimes outshine the fighters themselves. Orihime is that kind of support.

I still love both and I agree that I preferred the natural tendencies of love Orihime portrayed and her caring attitude for Ichigo which others could not achieve and relation to Masaki. Her backstory with her outgoing backstory is a very nice contrast. In terms of Rukia, I think her theme of neglect to acceptance explores a well written female well to me as her changing her pain and suffering into something positive . For example in the Soul Society she realises her suffering is going to come to an end yet despite this she still wants to protect those she loves. Its that constant driving force that motivates others and Ichigo here " I'll never forgive you if you come" one of my fav lines expresses her tears and only need to protect Ichigo and friends so she is not alone once more. Her constant strive and her getting stronger where she has bankai and becoming a Captain of Squad 13 is very interesting in comparison to the beginning where she was injured by a Hollow & attaining that power her bankai is still one of the hardest to release. The contrast to Ichigo and his Hollow form with her being white and representing an angel and her beauty in essence but still being deadly like him as White Haze Punishment. The dispute between her and Byakuya shows the tensions between siblings reminds me of Itachi and Sasuke in another way. There is sooo much to dive into her character. I still think Orihime is a great character but Rukia is just more fleshed out as a character. She is just a bit underutilised nonetheless two great females. What are your thoughts?

Orihime, was a character that would have been a very reliant person on others but sets a very different narrative in place as she not seeks the helps of others but instead seeks to assist others in relation to her powers. Through her conflict in getting bullied and having horrible parents Sora was present and assisted her and so Her entire life when with Ichigo can be seen as a reverse and her redemption from a life of dependency to assisting. She lives her past in reverse to the point where it even provides conflict for characters for tatsuki who has always been there and yet right when she could no longer be there and Ichigo could not tell her for her own protection she lives out the struggle of not being able to protect her or even know what she is going through. She struggles in her ideal of bringing happiness to others despite her efforts. Ichigo is constantly is met with a stronger enemy and she is far behind them all trying her hardest to bite back the hesitation to insert herself into the greater issues in an entirely different aspect. Instead of fighting she is uniting and slowly does this to most characters and ofc in her bond with Ichigo, but also with tatsuki, Riruka with how love is truly shown, me only with the way in which we can change people with kindness and not with our blades which suprised Ichigo every time he sees her act like this considering she always grows in this he’s fought to protect others Humanism and the way we is very touched upon in every interaction, Rukia pushes past her neglection, and Orihime pushes past reliance and the need to be comforted cause she wants to be this comfort to others. Even past reliance and strength There is also the theme of the fear of which we cannot understand and beings which we always oppose. That life will forever be a war unless we can’t meet our opposition and come to terms like her open with uniting the ground and the sky (I could be wrong and it could the rain and the sun or something of the like in her volume poem) with them which is in close relation to the plot as they keep fighting beings in which they naturally oppose and she always sees the greater in them and human in them. This is different from her earlier counter parts as she was afraid of her brother originally as a hollow, she was afraid of Ichigo and later she can meet them both smiles and words of encouragement, which earlier Orihime hesitated in even expressing.Honestly, after writing this to me they are both amazing characters and females. I want to say that Rukia was more fleshed out. Her line with telling Ichigo simply not to get hurt even if he looses or wins, is back shows her thoughts and idea change on the concept of others being terrible for their weaknesses and their comings and that she is able to come back to him ( cause yk she likes him ofc) showing that winning and loosing does not matter and that he should not be brought down by these factors, for he means so much more a contrast to her earlier where she was shot down and Rukia helped her.Those words are powerful.Which is relation to both her and Ichigo, Ichigo getting shot down cause his effort to protect others is paying off as he looses, and a contrast to Orihime in the beginning who thought that her weakness in not being to do anything was indeed her weakness but instead Rukia tells her it those who loose their resolve that are actually weak and she tells Ichigo this in her way of helping like she always wanted. There are ofc other themes to Rukia as well but I can’t help but feel if anything Rukia and Orihime are still even or that Rukia is just slightly more developed. I’m actually kinda torn now. What is her problem is the severe lack of attention given to her by the plot despite her busted abilities and her lack of agency outside of anything besides Ichigo. I think Orihime is a unique character. she can think logically and rationally. But can apply a human emotional response to her reasoning. She is very brave. She often doesn't let anger any negative emotions to control her or be the reasons for her actions (except that time she slapped Ulquiorra. He kinda deserved it. not so often you get to see her get a little physical now and again.. anyways). Most people fall victim to anger and envy and jealousy to a point where they cant pull themselves out it. Despite few of the insecurities she was struggling with, she never let it over power her. instead dealt with it. She uses her will, and understanding as a need to protect and support those she comes to care about. She is effective in a way the others aren't. I like that there is a slight complexity about her. Implicates that there's more to her character than just her powers. shows that her character will evolve more in the series to come.

I never felt Rukia was a good fit for Ichigo as a romantic partner. Are they comrades-in-arms? There is no doubt about that. Their dynamic and closeness reminded me of my brothers in the Army. Rukia never seemed to show the physical signs of someone in love with or crushing on Ichigo. She DID lose her cool around Renji tho and from what we see in the manga, the tension between Rukia and Renji had been going for several decades. I feel that quite a few fans, including me, saw a clear, if budding, romantic connection between Orihime and Ichigo. They had many similarities and their differences did not dissuade them from becoming good friends at first and eventually highly-confused teens with hormone imbalances, raw emotions, great passion, and mutual interest. Besides that, Rukia never once displayed cradle-robbing tendencies. FFS, she's old enough to be Ichigo's great grandmother.

i watched bleach and ppl were saying ichiruki were the popular ship and i tried hard to like both of them together, but i couldn’t. i always saw rukia as a sort of big sister figure for ichigo. it always seemed like she was baby sitting him lol but at the same time, rukia and ichigo were a lot alike and are like loyal comrades when it came to uplifting each other and had each other’s back when they needed it, like their relationship just never felt romantic. They were one in the same. Plus Rukia was always about business. The last thing she’d do was fall in love with ichigo lol besides, she knew that ichigo and orihime had feelings for one another even if they didn’t know themselves. she already had her “special” lil thing with renji and it already seemed like they were already in a relationship as they were inseparable since ichigo got them together. Renji even thanked Ichigo for reuniting them and repairing their relationship to what it was like before, I suppose they were about to start a relationship until Rukia got adopted to be a nobel.

man you did amazingly well on this but this does further the fact that there's noticeable cracks in the story telling as a whole(likely as a result of Jump not letting Kubo tell a story on his own pace) and while I will agree that Orihime is not a damsel in need of saving the arcs of when Arrancar get introduced and going forward I can only see the story forcing her to take a back seat rather than participate to at least grow strong as Ichigo does. it doesn't help that Urahara, in his infinite wisdom, decided instead of keeping her safe at his shop so at least Azin has a harder time getting her should he have found out after the first encounter with the 4th and 10th Arrancar says she should more or less stay at home(so much underestimating especially considering what the Vizars and his own history with Azin should have made him more cautious when planning out strategy). its only really in the 1000 year blood arc that the story lets her ride shotgun with Ichigo and we see her defensive/support skills being on par if not greater than his own battle. in short, get more root beer candies, your Analysis videos help explain a lot of these characters but also highlight the flaws and issues Bleach has overall whether they are on misconceptions like general story beats from the concluded arc or from a accurate story synopsis. I will say Bleach has a special soft spot in my heart but even I have to say it could have been better

I've never really understood the controversy and hate. Over the years, I just sticked in my own lane, not really delving into the fandom. Only when I did have I seen the hate. I personally really like her and her powers. Maybe it's cause I always choose the healer in games. Maybe it's cause I like the character that always liked the main character, like Hinata from Naruto. I don't know.

Orihime is an absolute gem! Sure, she can be too nice for her own good, but she holds true to herself and doesn't let hate overtake her. Her role as an emotional supporter and healer is vital to Ichigo and everyone else and she is one of my favorite characters in Bleach. While she may have her flaws, she holds a special place in my heart. People can have their own opinions about her, but Orihime will always be one of the best Female Anime Characters for me! I noticed something a little while ago that when Urahara or Hanataro healed Ichigo he still had scars on his chest and arms but after Orihime healed him he didn’t have any scars. Kubo was dropping hints about her powers and it took me years to realize this😅

On Orihime's first appearance, I realized that she looked like Ichigo's mother. Not just because of the orange hair. But the way a mother has with her son was what Orihime had with Ichigo. She was young, so it was noticeable that her feelings would be more of love than simple affection. This explains - at least for me - why Inoue did so well as a mother and housewife in the last chapter of Bleach. It was something about her being, her soul, a representation of the many gifts that women have. I think another character that represents this very well is Juria in Hokuto no Ken. That's why I like the characters in Bleach. They are simple, not simpleton. They have the cliché of the other anime characters, but they weren't cliched. They are easy-to-understand characters - one of the factors I attribute to Tite Kubo's design - and with which anyone can identify. Who has never dreamed of or had a (girl)friend like Orihime, for example?

What I like about your videos is how you describe the perspectives based on the character. Like in the Urahara video, we learn that Urahara only told Orihime this to keep her away from Aizen and you used this to explain Urahara's personality and how he can be blunt when he needs be. And then in this video, we get Orihime's take on it. I love how you explain scenes from different perspectives. And I really think Urahara and Orihime was important to explain in both videos.

I love Orhime, I'm so confused why she gets hate. Firstly, anyone who plays any RPG, knows how important a healer is. secondly, not every character has to have over the top killing powers. Orihime is perfect for Ichigo, they are like yin and yang. She keeps the heart in the crew if you ask me. She's the glue... and I'm SO glad her and Ichigo end up together!

I honestly don’t understand why people call Orihime useless... is it just because she’s not a fighter? Yeah true she’s not a fighter, she is a healer. And just how many (of their favourite) characters would have died if not for her? She saved so many lives with her powers, calling her useless is like calling doctors useless lol
