Bruce...thanks for the video reply. I appreciate your thoughts and I do believer I am going to go with the Murph. I have 7.5 inch wrists and my almost daily wear is a 43mm Aquaracer like the green one you did a video on earlier. Keep the videos commenting.

To me, comes down to aesthetics, plus 80 hour power reserve versus date function. Oris wins on aesthetics for me, and superior power reserve is neutralized absent a date function. So for me, Oris wins- but could just as easily see it go the other way for someone else. (Then again, I’m Jonesing for an Omega at the moment, so what do I know?)

Great choice.. I have the Khaki Field automatic, 42mm . Same case and movement as the Murph and it fits perfectly on my 7.5" wrist . And is my most accurate at + 1 spd . Enjoy .

The Hamilton is a great watch. My Murph runs at +5 to 7 seconds a week. My Seiko MM200 not so good at + 7 seconds a DAY! The quality and fit and finish on the Hamilton are excellent. Not so much on the Seiko. The beautiful sepia quality of the Hamilton dial is never conveyed with any great authenticity in video. Never owned an ORIS.

The Oris pointer date is a new edition of an "historic" watch while, as far as I know, the Murph is a fantasy watch.

The problem with Hamilton is not event the size but its long lugs. Even on my 38mm Khaki they are kind of pushing it - I would be very cautions about getting the Murph. As for the price - people get spoiled by the grey market. You can get Khakis there for like 50% off; Murph - not so much. I kind of wished that the Murph had something more to it than just the movie - maybe having silicone parts like some Tissot and Mido watches with Powermatic do, or maybe a COSC certification

I think the "Murph" is too big for what it is, and the "Cooper" is a better watch. I also think the Oris looks much better than the "Murph". The looks, combined with the added utility of the date function would make the Oris my choice.

I had a Murph, but eventually sold it. lug to lug was just a little too big, even for my 7-inch wrist.otherwise I enjoyed the watch and it was one of the more accurate watches I've ever owned. Plus that 80 hour power reserve is fantastic. if you have the wrist for it, I would definitely recommend it

Like the Murph. I have a Hamilton Khaki Field. I also have an Oris Big Crown Pointer Date. Valid point about accuracy but IMO the Pointer Date a superior watch. Case design, uniqueness of date complication, comfort, and surprisingly nice braclet. I have a 7.25 wrist.

I've had experience with both and I am a HUGE Hamilton fan but the Oris crushes the Murph in my opinion. The difference between the movements is very minimal. Both watches ran within 2-3 seconds fast per day. Where the Oris really pulls ahead is the finishing and case design. In person, the Big Crown Pointer Date is absolutely stunning. The Murph feels so cheap on the wrist between the awful strap and the sharp edges and oversized lug to lug. I returned the Murph after a week and picked up the Pointer date not long ago. As I mentioned, I love Hamilton and own several but between these two, the Oris wins in terms of design, feel, size, and a wash on the movement.

I've bought profiled (you know, "pre-curved", those are my new love btw) strap from Tommy Hilfiger for my Murph, even changed the buckle to original one and now it's perfect! Lugs don't appear as long as they did, it perfectly sits on wrist, it doesn't move. It's because the strap is more prominent now - it touches the case, it "hugs" it, you don't see the space between the case and the strap etc. I think Hamilton bracelet would do the job as well to "diminish" the lugs :) I do have tiny wrist (but quite flat and wide so the lugs don't over hang) so I have no idea how guys with larger wrists, especially if they would change to the curved strap, can complain :) So again guys, one word - PROFILED STRAPS :)

I agree the Oris accuracy deviation is a little too wide, however I have a few watches with similar movements, if I'm not happy with the accuracy I swing by my local watch maker and have him throw them on the time grapher, they are all running between +1.5 to +3 seconds per day, it takes hime about 20 minutes and he usually charges me 10 or 15 dollars Isn't the ability to be fixed and maintained over time one of the biggest perks of a mechanical watch anyway?? thanks for the vid

So true about the Oris movements. My black Aquis runs like 1 sec a day fast, but my Clean Ocean runs about 5. I have to say if you are going to put out a limited edition for the price they ask, they should regulate those Sellitas, or put a higher grade in them.

They make 2 black dial versions...the "Movember" version has cream/ rose gold hands and Arabic numerals. It's a really beautiful watch...but I went for the faded blue dial . Great to hear your opinion. I own both and I think they are different. And I could not choose ! The Oris SW200-1 *can* be properly adjusted for about 50 quids by your favourite nearby horloger. Oris usually indeed do not regulate well their selitta; or to be fair to them, I think that the storage and the postage of their watches is probably what make them deviate after quality check in their factory. However Oris' SW200-1 has a 4Hz sweep, beautiful and smooth. Hamilton's H10 are an ETA C07.111 beating at 3Hz (21600bph) that sweeps much less smoothly but runs for 80h (vs 42 for the Oris). It is in factory laser regulated ... the perks of being part of Swatch Group. It is however impossible to manually regulate it if needed, you need to send it back to a service center. So, seconds sweep vs great precision, small independent and creative company vs massive watchmaker, both have amazing designs ... I just bought both. A brown Oris and the black Hamilton. Just a way to wear them assorted to my clothes. If you can, buy both too; they are both amazing pieces.

Agree with your comments Bruce. My Oris is about 4-5 seconds per day, which isn't terrible. I've also seen some of my ETA movements with better or worse. I have to agree regarding Oris. I absolutely love the brand and had four Oris watches in the past. Currently I still own two. I think their bracelets and case constructions as well as the finishing is comparable to some Omega's and their look is mostly quite unique! BUT I have to agree regarding the movements. No problem with an ETA or Sellita but a more or less unfinished Sellita which doesn't seem to be regulated at all does absolutely not fit to their otherwise fine approach to watchmaking! It's really a shame. They do run quite well but if you compare them to other brands around this pricepoint like the mentioned Swatch group companies or Sinn for example they can't compete. Nevertheless I love them and in terms of visual quality I would prefer the Oris (that I've actually owned myself).

I have both the Murph and two Oris watches - Big Crown Pointer date in Blue and the Big Crown Propilot in Bronze and find them all roughly a few seconds fast each day. Maybe 3-5 seconds, which is perfect for my expectations. Every couple of weeks I'll correct them a little, no problem at all. I have a Seiko Sarb033 which used to run 90 seconds slow per day, so I paid Seiko to have the movement replaced and now it runs 15 seconds fast each day! I still don't mind this either. Personally, I support Oris because their watches are IMO, beautiful and unique...Plus the fact that they are the last independently owned Swiss watch maker. I like this. The 'Murph' is just a clean, simple and classy watch with just enough details make it interesting. I love the film link too. I have 8.5" wrists and this watch looks and feels right at home. You can't go wrong with either watch (or brand). Buy what you can afford and whichever pulls on the heart and not the head. You can always buy another in the years to come.

I threw the Murph on a timegrapher got +2s per day after letting sit for 45 minutes on the machine. +3s average over five different positions. The Powermatic 80 I'd say is arguably more accurate out of the box than a standard 2824.

I have the Hamilton Murph and I haven't stopped wearing it since I've bought it, and I have a few decent watches. I probably wouldn't recommend it for someone with under 7 inch wrists due to the lug to lug length. The slim profile and general simplistic aethetics really make this watch feel special and looks fantastic on my 7.5 inch wrists. I got this brand new from a UK AD for £620 ($840) and it's worth every penny.

Great video as always, for some reason I thought the Hamilton Murph was over priced. I looked up the prices for both these watched and the Oris big crown pointer costs 50% more than the Hamilton Murph in the UK. This has got me thinking, how does the fit and finish compare between the two? I would give the nod to Hamilton, not just for the price, but for that I already own another Hamilton which is a keeper for me.

I have had good luck with Oris. I currently own a muted blue pointer date which is beautiful and it runs +3 consistently. Had a Aquis that was decent too. Hamiltons quality control is just not up to par in my opinion. I've had two crap out on me. My khaki auto had the case flood with water from just accidentally submerging it for a second. I was reaching into a bucket of water to retrieve my phone that fell into it and yes the crown was pushed in. Phone actually survived and the watch did not. So much for 100 meters water resistant. Then I had a khaki mechanical and the crown stem snapped as I was winding it one morning. No im not a troglodyte and was being gental with it. My speedy has been wound countless times without issue. I love the way Hamiltons look too so it's a shame. Oris big crown pointer also has screw down crown and screw down caseback and even though it's a 5 bar watch, it's probably not going to have the case flood from simple things. I wouldn't swim with it but ya know what I mean. Anyway Bruce love your stuff keep it coming.

Bruce I agree with you on the Murph. I do prefer the look of it more than the Oris and again you are spot on regarding the size as it does wear a bit large. I like the power reserve and the fact that they are pretty accurate straight out of the box. But the movement is where I have a few concerns. Like the use of plastic parts in the escapement and the there are no adjustments to allow you to regulate the movement. Also the lower beat rate can be an issue for some people as well as the fact that servicing may potentially be an issue. As the Swatch group in recent times is making it increasingly difficult to get parts and movements. Whereas with the Oris parts should not be an issue and pretty much any competent watchmaker can easily regulate the movement. Stay safe and keep up the good work!

Shopping a great deal is just smart. You could end up with multiple great watches instead of just one for the same price. Both of those watches are beautiful. The sellita movement in the oris should be easy to regulate if better accuracy is desired. I recently recently regulated a sellita movement in one of my watches to within COSC standards (-4 to +6 sec per day). Almost any watchmaker can regulate ETA and sellita movements for a reasonable price.
@BruceWilliams
@BruceWilliams 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I have my watchmaker regulate any inaccurate watch purchase of mine in 6 positions. My point is, at this price you should expect good accuracy. Often doing a regulation or having a watchmaker do it will void any warranty which is important (unless your watchmaker is certified to work on the brand)

Yeah the Murph. Bit too big and long, a la Longines sometimes but at least they did one thing good with it in my opinion. It was a parts bin mish mash made in a hurry as a prop, using the 42 mm khaki field case, the pilot pioneer no date dial and hands, and a strap that was supposed to look aged and not perfectly matched. Then, when asked for 5 years to release the Murph watch, Hamilton gave fans the same watch the movie had, with all the stuff that we would want improved as watch people! The strap is not modern, high contrast stitch, the dial and case dont match, long on the lug etc etc. but its the ones from the movie in a new, off the shelf condition. Its for watch+movie fans really I think, as there are loads of other hamiltons if you want a field watch with dimensions that suit better.

I think the issue of the Hamilton Murph being considered too expensive is not in comparison to other brands of watches, but in comparison to other Hamiltons with similar design and movement. I agree , it's almost double the price of the 42mm khaki field automatic. Which is essentially the same watch , with different hands and dial . That's why I opted for the KFA . It's called the "murph" it's based on the prototype that was in the movie . The watch in the movie was 42mm . How's that dropping the ball?

Murph by miles 😉 Hamilton looks modern but retro, the Oris just looks like an old man's watch.. Hamilton has a better movement & better value too IMHO. Both cool watches tho, Cheers 👍🏻👍🏻

Well it is s retro copy of an old watch...so you could argue they got the aesthetic right ! I just ordered a bund strap for mine. 1930s Swiss air force watch on a 1940s German air force strap.

Damn Bruce, you just get nicer to your viewers with each video. I’ve got the green dial bronze Oris and it’s about +2 a day, and my heritage 65 runs spot on, so don’t let the accuracy estimates from the factory scare you off. That said, the Murph does look like an excellent choice.

Hamilton Murph is a favorite for the points that Bruce made and has a story. In person it’s such a nice watch. Stores around my part sell for 15-20% off only. Only reserve is resale value even if not going to resell. Recently bought a $1200 Hamilton and changed my mind after a month (bad news). No dealer would give over $240 for it in pristine condition which they would sell for about $400. With so much loss of value, to me Hamiltons are secondary market watches. If anyone is going to talk bad about me, I hope it’s Bruce.

No you make a good point. Sometimes watches tank in secondary value. Sometimes we as watch fans decide to sell. Those types of experiences turn you into a savvier buyer. I've lost a lot of money on watches in my past. Its made be a more observant collector

As a Hamilton whore, I would buy the Oris. The "Murph" is an overpriced 42mm Khaki Field without the date complication. I think it's an extremely good looking watch, I just don't think it's worth what they want. I actually did a video speaking on the "Murph" being overpriced in my opinion. My other thought is, as far as I know, I don't have any watchmakers that I know that can regulate it. In this case I would personally go with the SW200 because it's easily regulated and serviceable. Just my 2 cents.

Welcome! My personal views- I like many homage watches done within the brand. Like a turtle to a 6309. Or a BB58 to a few Rolex and Tudor designs from the 50-70s, etc. What I don't like is the a brand copying someone else's intellectual property and try to write is off as an 'homage'

While the Murph is a nice watch, it is too big and overpriced, and is a league below Oris in terms of design and finish. The finish on the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date is comparable to watches several thousand dollars more expensive, and the case design and dial are simply superior. The Sellita is an ETA 2824 clone with 26 rather than 25 jewels, and my Pointer Date is within COSC. The 38- hour power reserve (although this is more like 40) is the only thing I can fault Oris on.

I own the Oris and the Murph, I would argue the Oris is overpriced and that finishing is equivalent. Also the Murph has a real ETA movement instead of a clone.

@@desertsoldier41 Interesting, thanks. The finishing on my Pointer Date is superb, so great to hear that the Murph is equivalent. Price is obviously subjective; I certainly wouldn't pay retail for the Murph. But I paid a lot cheaper than retail through a grey market dealer for my Pointer Date (it really was a great deal), as the joy of having an ETA or Sellita movement is that they are cheap and easy to service if - and generally a big 'if' - something were to go wrong further down the line.
