The line "All my heroes are sadder than me." is a BRILLIANT line! It shows how she thinks she can only become like them through this sadness (the whole myth of a brilliant artist only being a sad one) and also at the same time feeling like what she feels is not valid since it's not "that bad".

The way I think about it is probably colored by my experience. My heroes are generally super sad and tragic people, like Emily Dickinson or Katherine of Aragon. But it could be that self-awareness and thinking, “why am I drawn to people like that? Why do I feel like we’re kindred spirits when they had such AWFUL lives and suffering? Why does this fascinate me?” It’s like how people who don’t like sad music can’t understand why people who do like it will listen to it when they’re sad. It either makes those other people more sad, or the ones who like it have a cathartic experience. When you’re drawn to sad or morbid things the world tells you it’s wrong, that it’s right to just be.... happy. Looking at sadness straight on is unsettling for a lot of people. So dwelling on it seems downright problematic or “nuts.” But... not all people react the same way to the same stimuli. 🤷🏻‍♀️
