BECAUSE I KEEP GETTING COMMENTS ABOUT MY HISTORY SECTION. After rewatching my video, I forgot to mention that the facility was renamed to McCoy at one point, but everything I'm saying is TRUE. Here's what I was referencing from the Orlando International Airport wiki page "The airfield was originally constructed as a U.S. Army Air Forces facility and military operations began in 1942 as an auxiliary airfield to Orlando Army Air Base, now known as Orlando Executive Airport. Orlando Army Air Field #2 was renamed Pinecastle Army Airfield in January 1943 ... A B-47 Stratojet crashed during the 1958 competition, killing Colonel Michael Norman Wright McCoy, commander of the 321st Bombardment Wing, which was the host wing for Pinecastle AFB. The following year the base was renamed for McCoy." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orlando_International_Airport
@ArdisTravel3 жыл бұрын
After WWII, it was no longer the US Army Air Forces. The Air Force became a separate branch of the military. It was Pinecastle Air Force Base, then McCoy Air Force Base. When jet service began in the 60s it was solely a domestic airport called Orlando Jetport at McCoy (or McCoy Jetport). This is when the airlines moved from Herndon Airport (now Orlando Executive). It didn't become Orlando International Airport until 1976 after McCoy AFB was closed.

Good video. One item of interest about the South Terminal is that is being built to accommodate connect(s) to rail lines. Currently Brightline train service to South Florida (Miami, etc...) is scheduled to start running in 2022 from the rail station at the South Terminal. Brightline is also in talks to extend their service to Disney World and potentially to the Tampa area.

I’m sorry, but I don’t have a definitive answer. What you are seeing is “Phase 1”, which includes that portion of the terminal project. Now whether the whole project completes or if it’s been downscaled because of the pandemic, I’m not sure. Haven’t heard anything.

@@jonesrmj @jr graff Yes, Brightline is scheduled to open in Orlando sometime in 2022 with direct service to West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami. The estimated travel time between Orlando and Miami is approximately 2 hours. The Brightline has two classes of travel, the first is Smart which is the equivilent coach on an airplane and the second is Select which is the equivilent of first class on an airplane. Go to www.gobrightline.com/trains and click on the Compare Classes button to see the various onboard amenities and go to www.gobrightline.com/routes-stations for the station amenities. I live 2 hrs north of Orlando. Anytime my family travels out of state we fly out of Orlando. We fly Southwest so we really only go to Terminal 2 on the northside. Its overall a very roomy airport. Tons of modern spaces to accomodate large amounts of people. Overall, its a very nice airport. I would love to see that south terminal sometime in the future or possibly fly out of it.

Perhaps, but Orlando has plenty of gates at two airports and will have more in the new terminal that can handle those aircraft. You don't need an A380 gate for those, they have several 747 gates really not going to be used going forward as well. They have an ever increasing amount of hub traffic to the islands these days.
@jonesrmj3 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind, A380 gates can also be used for 2 narrow bodies, so it's not like they will only be used for the A380.
@boatlover18753 жыл бұрын
@@jonesrmj I think that was my initial point. :) I used to have driving access on that ramp and know the existing terminals quite well.
@boatlover18753 жыл бұрын
The elephant in the room is the A 380 will basically not exist by the time this is done, nor will the 747 likely as far as for pax for much longer except maybe for some leisure that may still call on MCO.
@jonesrmj3 жыл бұрын
Emirates might still have their A380s because they've committed to keeping them till the 2030s, but yeah, most airlines are dumping them now.
@boatlover18753 жыл бұрын
@@jonesrmj They'll figure something out. Two 737 gates for Caribbean flights when no longer needed.
@chrispontani60593 жыл бұрын
The thing with A380 capable gates is the two-level boarding with two jetways. Just because you won’t have 380’s in the future doesn’t render the gates useless. Airlines will replace them with other large wise bodies like the 777 or A350.
@chrispontani60593 жыл бұрын
It’ll be interesting once the south terminal becomes fully built what will become of the north terminal. Those APM’s are a choke point and unnecessary with a modern design. Can they knock down the north terminal to rebuild while exclusively using the south terminal? Or will they have to rebuild in pieces? It’ll depend on what volumes are like 10-15 years from now. But one thing is certain...there’s going to be plenty of construction jobs there for the foreseeable future.
@jonesrmj3 жыл бұрын
That is all true. I think it all depends on what passenger numbers are at MCO. If the numbers are lower than expected, then they might demolish the old terminal maybe, but who knows.
@jonathanbishopmusic2 жыл бұрын
I'd hope they at least rebuild or meaningfully expand the airsides. With the exception of airside 2 (the one that for some reason never had the third wing built) all of them are both visually and functionally dated, even after two of them were renovated in 2010. Not enough seats, not enough concessions, and not enough space to accommodate the crowds that come through there, and it's made worse by low ceilings and 80's decor.

Hard to tell from this video, but many airports have lost focus on their mission: Move passengers from parking/arrival to planes. Too many long walks, too far to car rentals, too far to affordable parking,. Too many distractions that have nothing to do with flying.
@jonesrmj3 жыл бұрын
That is true, although I would say that description fits a lot of Asian and Middle Eastern Airports. They have a lot of amazing amenities, but also require longer walks to far away gates. Thanks for watching!

You speak the truth. Take a look at this old film from Tampa International Airport. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5fNmWhjpq55eKs Quote from the film - "The simple sad fact is that most air terminals have been designed for the convenience of airplanes and the poor passenger has paid the price in personal inconvenience."

Distractions = non-airline revenue for the airports.

So now that the A3 So not that the A380's are no longer flying where does this leave this expansion plan?
@jonesrmj3 жыл бұрын
Firstly, the A380 is not completely dead. While some airlines like Air France and Lufthansa are retiring their A380s, Emirates, Qantas, British Airways, Korean Air, China Southern, and Singapore have committed to keep their A380s. Secondly, A380 gates can be used for other wide bodies, or can handle two narrow bodies, so it's not like the gate can only be used by the A380.

Certainly an improvement over the existing terminal in some aspects, but I'm still not a huge fan of the design. Unless they're planning to add moving walkways and a peoplemover this is going to be a longgg walk for a lot of passengers. It also looks very utilitarian and very early 2000's, like it was designed in the 90's as part of some master plan and was left mostly unchanged when it came time to build it decades later.
