In 1975 Rolling Stone wrote that Orleans was the best live band in America. If all you know of them is Dance With Me and Still the One, you may find that unbelievable. But in '75, these guys played the Syracuse University quad the first week of school. I've seen many live shows in my 65 years on earth. That night was one of the greatest shows I've ever seen. Unbelievably powerful and funky - energy and musicianship off the charts. The band on this video is terrific, but not like then. And this band misses Wells Kelly, who was one of the funkiest, tastiest drummers ever. Well, most bands lose some of the hungry edge they had coming up. But back then, and for a time - especially on one September night in '75 - Orleans was The One.

Just the most awesome band. Great memory for me: 1972 played a Wed night jam at The Salty Dog, Ithaca with Orleans, who hosted. After a robust audience response to one of my sax solos, between songs back at the amps John Hall shot this over his shoulder : " And you want to be a f'n Doctor?" Still playing, and still doctorin', John!

Was just watching some Orleans vids and saw your post and couldn’t resist responding. I was in a band called Headwind and we played at the Dog in ‘71 and 72, (also the Haunt and the North 40). I also saw Orleans many times and they were incredible (initially just the three of them). I learned a lot just from watching John play, he was really a master of that vintage strat! I’m also a Doc, just retired recently after 37 years of practice so I laughed when I read your post. I’m not doctoring anymore but I’m still playing. Great memories of the Salty Dog and Orlean’s fabulous music!

wonderful! Silly side note, I pumped gas for Wells and then Larry in the Woodstock area, absolute gentlemen (sold Kirbys with Larry, but that is another story:) Drank Beer with Lane at the Joyous lake (watching his older bros play their music) who grew into Orlean's secret weapon) Got rest Larry and well's souls and great health to all of Orleans and their friends and family. All and all, a wonderful group of very talented and very cool guys. Thanks for posting this!

RIP Larry. Used to hitchhike to Ithaca as a kid to see the originals at the North 40 (?).

It's nice to see John used a glass slide, my preference. The trademark vocal harmonies and guitar harmonies as always are first rate! I hope you're able to post part 2.

So enjoyable. Saw Orleans a few times in '74, I think, in Beverly MA and Boston, and loved their first record. This is a great concert. Thanks for posting.

Saw Orleans 7/6/1975 at outdoor concert at Morgia's Clam Shed in Sackets Harbor, NY. Opening for Orleans were local bands C.R.A.C. (feat. Rick Cua)(from Syracuse, NY) KISS (feat. Bob Kissell)(from Watertown, NY). Best concert I have ever attended.

When they were in their 20s, the fans who had lined up before the venue opened greeted the members with a big round of applause as they got out of the car that arrived in front of Japan's Nagoya Bottom Line. The Orleans responded with a smile and put on the best live performance of the night. The entire venue sang “Dance with Me”It's still burned into my mind
This is incredible! Probably the best I've heard by them!!!!

'Wound up on a pretty cool clubdate with P O'Brian in like a past life. The players were exceptional as we're they're spirits! It's great to get to listen to a couple of tunes I'd not known of until now! Larry also has a 'Jazz Ear' in some of his compositional writings "If You Were A...." seems a bit similar to "Ending Of A Song" in a way. ARIGATO y'all for this temporary yet EFFECTIVE BREAK***
