This was a nice surprise...I remember hearing East Coast Vijayan's name first during my college life when he associated with Balabhaskar (a renowned Violinist who changed the scene for independent musicians especially violinists in Kerala) to come up with an album 'Ninakkai' - This was back in 98 when the independent music scene was just starting to get some mileage in India with Made In India, Pari Hoon main etc. 'Ninakkai thozhi' from that album became a rage during those days and the cassette became a major hit then...In the following year, the same duo came up with 'Adyamai' - another hit album and this one 'Ormakkai' was the follow up to that back in 2001...I actually don't remember seeing the video associated with it funnily enough - so maybe seeing it for the first time here but this song was again a major hit and have listened to that multiple times those days...one of the aspects (apart from the whole independent music album getting popularity and introducing musicians/music directors who weren't getting their due in film music) was the simplicity of lyrics...While they would be termed as 'cringe' or 'over dramatized' (the term in malayalam is 'painkili'), they had an easy accessibility ...And of course , Dasettan and Chitra Chechi elevated the song with their great singing... I am not sure if it's the debut but I remember hearing and noting the name M Jayachandran as a music director for first time in this...He has gone on and become one of the most prominent music directors in the last 20yrs giving us many many gems...Would highly recommend to checkout 'Perumazhakkalam'
