I have to go pick up a rental car, but I wanted to get this up. There's no formula or calculus for ornamenting tunes, but this may be a bit helpful (I have my doubts whether it will be, of course)

Thank you for this video. I’m so glad you mentioned not to play it overly fast/too fast, i agree it turns it into a sloppy mess with no good technique or rhythm . I really am enjoying your tutorials , thank you !!!!

Thank you so much for these! Not only have you been a rich source for basic tunes and their slowed-down versions, you've also drawn my attention to structural elements that influence, or should influence, "ornamentation." I wonder if you could insert occasional brief explanations about relations between notes, keys, ornaments, and the anatomy of the hand?

Nice stuff Ryan. Good points about ornaments, speed, and variation. IMHO, over last decades (showing my age!) ornamentation has overtaken variation to a massive extent in Irish music (at least in Ireland-I live in Galway), more variation should be encouraged!

I love dance music. Record a video with Denis Murphy's polka please! Your videos are very helpful in learning.

I really enjoy the way you ornament your tunes. You have this elegant style of using plenty of ornamentation and variation while retaining a great clarity of tone and melody. Very reminiscent of Joanie Madden and Mary Bergin. I'm sure it must be hard breaking down what seems like second nature, but it was a lovely video! Hope to see more like it, maybe one for the Cat's Meow?

Thanks for this video, it is very helpful for someone who just picked up Cooley's and was looking to diversify a bit. Also, what's the name of the second tune you show towards the end?

A video on ornaments seems like a good place for this question. I'm looking at a tutorial* with the dots and tab. Two low D's are separated with a g grace note, by the dots, but tabbed as: xxoxxx. Isn't lifting the top ring finger sounding an A? *McCullogh, L.E. "The Complete Irish Tin Whistle Tutor"

True that it sounds mechanical and monotonous if played too fast ☺

I still hate "A" rolls....

So do I! When I was first learning the Kesh it was so frustrating going from a "G" roll (which is easy!) to "A" rolls where my fingers didn't want to co-operate. It does get easier. When I start flubbing my A rolls it's usually a sign I've been drinking my Guinness too quickly.

I think playing too fast destroys any melody, and everything ( to someone non Irish), begins to sound alike. But perhaps I am missing something....
