Baby orphan Gimli experienced trauma that’s hard for us to understand putting him in a dark place of depression. This is his journey from total loss to acceptance by all the monkeys in the James enclosure. The videos are their timeline captured by our amazing volunteers - at the Vervet Monkey Foundation, a wildlife conservation & animal rescue sanctuary.

The Vervet Forest is a wildlife rehab series focused on Vervet Monkeys at the Vervet Monkey Foundation . The series showcases the process of taking orphaned and injured vervet monkeys through a foster mother program which helps these rescued orphan baby monkeys to be adopted by foster mother monkeys. The show is for fans of animal planet, nat geo, discovery and anyone who is an animal lover, loves animals and would like to be part of helping them get back to the wild.

Wow, I felt so bad for little Gimli when he first came to you all, but now after watching him, how he slowly broke out his Shell from the results of all your efforts, he has finally started enjoying being a baby monkey again, this makes me so very happy for him! All of you at the VMF are so AWESOME, and GOOD FORTUNE comes to All People who are AWESOME❗ 💗🙏 😊

When I saw Gimli again as a traumatized baby it brought tears of sorrow to my eyes. But when I saw him at the end of the video it brought tears of joy to my eyes. I will never forget seeing Gimli playing with an empty toilet paper roll and the joy on his face. It was then that I knew he was going to be okay. Thank you to everyone who had a hand in helping Gimli get to where he is today!!!

LOVED THIS. Thanks, Dave, nice to see Gimli breakthrough his despair, as you say we never know what the trauma has done, and just how they are going to deal with it. Would like to say thank you, to you and the whole team, your sanctuary is a Godsend and you all deserve the highest praise, especially at these difficult times.

Dave you are so very humble in your herculean efforts to help and save the orphan vervets. If not for your Foundation, I can't even imagine what would happen to souls like little GImli. Thank you for including us and making us feel as if we are making a difference. The true catalyst is you and your wonderful Foundation! Thank you so much for this mini- film on Gimli's story! The video about Gimli and his recovery from his severe withdrawal to the playful and healthy monkey with his mom and the rest of his Troup has been a wonderful experience - Your work with his depression and slowly letting him attach to other monkey who could understand and relate to him was so skilled, gentle and kind - very moving - I am a family psychotherapist (with people) resonates deeply with me. Thank you!!

Agreed. So many of them show evidence of PTSD. It must be difficult to bring them out of it, as the classic means of dealing with PTSD in humans (medication and talk therapy) aren't available for the little monkeys. Thanks for the work all of you do.

Thank you 🙏🏼 all of you!! Gimli has made such huge progress and his turnaround touched so many hearts out here in social media land!! That’s huge!! I hate that he was so hurt & traumatized, or that any vervets are, BUT I’m so relieved he landed at VMF!! He was the reason I became a member on KZbin, became a Patreon, waited for every post & picture to pop up on Instagram & Facebook. I did not want to miss a second of his fight for recovery. And by watching Gimli, I fell 💗for so many vervets, young & old, (a few samangos too!) & the staff + vols. It’s all this monkeys fault!!

When I seen how sad and withdrawn Gimli was it just really broke my heart. I could tell that he had a very happy life before this and that he was very close to his mom. No telling what he seen or how he became an orphan but the way he has lighten up since gaining a foster mom shows you how important the bond between baby and mom is.

After you got Gimli, and saw the progress, a purebred Queensland heeler came to me as a stray out in the middle of nowhere in the desert where I live. He was dehydrated and very hungry. Learning from you, Dave, this poor young dog was very withdrawn and scared. But with all the food and water he wants and TONS of love and playing, he is my best friend and goes everywhere with me. The red heeler is so smart. But VMF has taught me so much. With time and patience, abused and frightened animals will come out of their shells. Thank you all. Wish I could hold a baby VERVET, if only for a little while.

Talk about a come back story!! Goooo Gimli live your best life! Watch a catch 22 though all he needed was a Mom to be happy and all that was holding him back from having a Mom for so long was himself sadly. His depression took him longer to acclimate to each stage like the feeding cage and especially the bottle feeding which are vital to getting to Mom. Thankfully this sweet boy caught on and caught up and got his happily ever after...I seriously cried when he finally had his first cuddles he so longed for. 💗 🐵

When he 1st laid his eyes on a figure that was an adult… Gimli was like *Are you my mother?* So many people under estimate how alike they are to humans… they feel depression, joy, fear and happiness as we do. Lil Gimli most definitely would've perished if not for this foundation. He needed his mom when she was taken from him and that need hadn't changed even tho she had been taken from him. *Wonderful work… in giving this lil guy what he needed* 👍👌✌️
