Orthodoxy and Orthopraxy in Wicca

When seekers ask about what Gardnerian Wiccans believe, they're often told that Wicca is an orthopraxy, not an orthodoxy. Unfortunately, those terms carry connotations that may give people a misleading impression of Wicca. In this video, I explore why I dislike the "orthopraxy, not orthodoxy" line.

I really loved the mental illness comparison, as someone who deals with that, its an interesting analogy. People are individuals and should be individuals. I always think of Christopher Penczak's idea of we all need to eventually find our own spiritual practice that is our own, not that there will never be similarities between people, we are all human and already have that in common. We can and should listen to other people's perspectives in all things with life but we do not need to adhere to other's opinions. In the spiritual realm all things are opinion based on perspective and we can agree on a structure if you are going to participate in a specific branch of spiritual practice that has structure but it is still up to the individual what effects them or not.

I feel, and teach, that the symbols in the ritual can be found in all sorts of places, from nature, to science, philosophy, mythology, religion, etc. As long as the symbols are recognized and understood from a person's personal place of experience, I don't really care how they get to the symbols. I tend to go through the big topics, like reincarnation, karma, polarity, energy, from many of those places, starting in science because I tend to be more atheistic in my beliefs. I figure if I give them several sources, they can figure out how to fit it into their own belief system. So I agree there is a sort of macro belief system rooted in symbols within Wicca. But individual belief can still find purchase without losing the ritual's effectiveness.
