Luke, you say it's hard for a fighter to become a 2x Champion, let alone 3x champ, and youre right... except when you get immediate title fight rematches after losing. It becomes a lot easier when being gifted title fight after title fight, despite losing the belt twice in 3 fights, and never having to work back to a title fight like everyone else has to.

As a long time football fan, and witnessing the impact "Man City" has had on the English Premier League, I can confidently say that this is sports-washing in it's purest form. Turki isn't a wealthy singular actor, he's a representative of the country of Saudi Arabia.

@elliottspence3 ай бұрын
BC, you talk about sports-washing by the Saudi government. You need to include the U.S. in that, too, and their countless crimes against humanity. Maybe it's become part and parcel and you're numb to it, but you should still acknowledge it. After all, the U.S. are as complicit in the Saudi 'agenda' by proxy of these partnerships in sports and other ventures. Politics aside, good show.
@zoheir11623 ай бұрын
The saudi government is literally usa proxy. u.s citizens can be so ignorant.
@CommunityServiceBand2 ай бұрын
There’s something to that argument. Big difference is that the U.S. is a free society with democratic institutions where these matters can be discussed publicly and you can vote the people you deem responsible out of office. None of that applies to the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The U.S. being in bed with Saudi is questionable, but geopolitics does sometimes involve partnering with questionable regimes.
@elliottspence2 ай бұрын
@@CommunityServiceBand Appreciate your reply. A fews weeks late on my part, but calling the U.S. a free society is leaning heavier to the 'it is on paper'. Democratic institutions have in large part been co-opted and I'm sure you know this and this is only becoming more apparent and detrimental to the notion of a free society. Unfortunately, what little power is left for society in these democratic infastructures, isn't exercised and to your point of voting people in and out of office, isn't helped by an uninformed/misinformed/under-informed voter populous. Tribalism run amuck. I believe my point stands about including the U.S. as a culpable agent of destruction as is evident in their geopolitcal record and forever-wars. It really isn't about condoning partnerships with questionable regimes, it's about acknowledging that both partners are just 'bad'.
@CommunityServiceBand2 ай бұрын
@@elliottspence I appreciate your response. I take your criticism that democratic institutions in the U.S. don’t function as well as they should. And true, most are corrupt in some way. But I need something to critique. I want individual rights, an independent judiciary and a free press. And then I want to argue that they’re not doing their job. Or that my tax dollars are going to a foreign intervention I don’t approve of. Sure, there is tribalism and misinformation and all sorts of imperfection to the system. But at least the system has corrective mechanisms that are real. Degrading as they might be. To the point of the U.S. as a geopolitical actor. You, indeed, cannot say that the U.S. is a universal good. Its geopolitical ledger is very mixed. But that goes for every major sphere of influence, it comes with the territory of being a superpower. What makes the difference for me is that the West (spearheaded by the U.S.) is a largely voluntary sphere of influence, consisting of nations with those same democratic institutions (Europe, Japan, Korea, etc). There is a reason Ukraine and Taiwan want to join that sphere of influence and look to the U.S. for protection. This is in stark contrast to, say, China, Russia and OPEC for example. Their spheres of influence are authoritarian, unstable and in no way mutually beneficial. I agree that the U.S. is ‘bad’ in many ways. But the differences with other major powers in terms of values and democratic institutions are enormous. To me, those values should be upheld, not discarded. One has to spend but a day in an unfree society to understand that they are not trivial.
@elliottspence2 ай бұрын
@@CommunityServiceBand Thank you for the response. I think this is starting to veer off of the path of my original point of including the U.S. as a culpable part of the sportswashing phenomenon. But this will be my last comment on this thread. I don't use social media at all and this is abnormal of me, but I'm happy to respond as I enjoy the back and fourth. Though I much prefer to engage in person with these kinds of discourse. I'm assuming you're American or live in America? If not, my mistake. What you might define as an 'unfree society' (you haven't been clear of these particular places aside from possible inference), I've lived and worked in many of these places, as well as formed strong relationships with nation-born people of these countries in continents such as Africa and Asia (unfortunately, haven't had the chance just yet to visit the country of Russia). This is not to say that these countries are free of scrutiny and that I have a romanticised view of them. Not at all. In fact, it's even more complicated and just as complicated as the western hemisphere. But here is the key difference, these countries are an open book (by force or otherwise) when it comes to their major issues and they have been the punching bag for such stereotypes, where as the true face of a country like America has lived behind an incrementally thicker smokescreen of 'values'. Truth being, democracy was stolen from its people several election cycles ago (Bush/Gore example) and has only become more ostensible since. So that kind of mechanism is close to redundant. The U.S. being a voluntary sphere of influence has had what overall outcome on the world today? Their ledger being mixed is another way of saying what the truth actually is, they are a destructive force on the world. 1,000 military bases and counting around the globe, for what? Intersectional geopolitics like that of Taiwan (a U.S. proxy nation) and China for example. A weapon of constant division and tension rising on a global scale, alongside stealing resources. The flipside being, many of these countries' governments have been bought (they accepted the bribe) by the U.S. in order to place a base in their country or hire their armies (example, Kenya/Haiti) and that money does not go back into that country's society. The U.S. knows this, but that isn't their priority. Both sides are culpable. How about capitialism from the economic sector of the U.S. and the consistent crashes that happen every 3-4 years reverberating in global depressions. What mechanisms are in place to stop this? Democracy? No - that's been stolen. Why? Because the very criticism pointed at the supposed totalitarian states in another part of the world is actually now a mirror for the U.S.. Rights are constantly infringed every single day in the U.S. just like a despotic land and there is no mechanism in place that is effective to resolve or reverse this, because those controlling said-mechanisms are also those inflicting the damage. Example: 'Stop and frisk' from a police complex that operates like a swat team/military unit (many of whom have been trained by overseas elements like the IDF). Let me mention the poverty and a 5-minute walk down South Venice Boulevard for example - this is basically what I've seen in downtown Nairobi and parts of Cameroon, Johannesburg, Mumbai etc.. You literally cannot see the difference between America and a 'developing country' when you see this. California - the 5th largest economy in the world with the highest homeless population in the country. What reason is there for this? What mechanism is in place to reverse this? Gentrification? Okay, house these people. No, the state would rather bring in higher-earners who can afford the criminally high rent. The U.S. is medicated in a variety of ways and revolution is basically a pipe-dream at this moment and that's being generous. I would also be remissed if I didn't mention how the U.S. incarcerates more of its own population than any other country in the entire world. There is a reason why we now call these institutions, 'industrial complexes' - they are products of industry in a capitalist system that has completely fallen into the Mariana Trench of absolute greed with no contingency to support society. They have taken on the ancestral traits of enslavement and free labour (prisoners working for nothing - jobs that could be given to the non-incarcerated). Many will hear this and say, 'yeah, but what about Communist China?' No, China isn't actually a communist country in the sense that stereotypes will have one believe. In fact, they are one of the most capitalistic countries in the world and funnily enough, they are more effective in capitalism when ratioed to a society that maintains a strong jobs market (might not be your desired job, but it's a job that pays enough to maintain a roof and food for the family and a relative social life) and record low homelessness, albeit, mental health issues do incur. The inverse to this, is the U.S., where people work 3-4 jobs a week just to make it through, some of whom are even homeless and living in their car while maintaining said-job(s). Sphere of influence. More nations are wanting to join BRICS, which now has its own currency making the dollar-value deflate. No more over-charging by the U.S.. In fact, the U.S. (due to their shunning of Russia) are still buying Russian oil, but do not make it public. They instead pay the third-party charge so they can claim it came from the intermediary and not Russia. With BRICS, other counties and super-powers in some cases, now get to take the lead and that hurts the ego of the U.S.. They never evolved with the rest of the world, and like an empire built off of the backs of slaves, they got complacent and are now paying the price (more so its citizens). The United Nations has had no value since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, but the Americans, the Brits, France etc. will want you to believe otherwise because it's strictly a money-making scheme with no intention of paying back into their societies. You and I do not see a penny of this. BRICS is the inverse. It goes back into the jobs markets. There is a reason why over 40 countries from 4 continents are on the waiting list to join BRICS. These goverments and the people they serve, have overwhelmingly provided testimony that this BRICS system will elevate them socially/econically. How long this will last? I don't know. But this is the situation as we speak. You mention instability, I do not see this at all. Dare I say, it sounds like U.S. projection and insecurity. Though I respect and totally agree and resonate with your wants and needs, some of your views of the U.S. are incredibly dated and out of step with reality. I'm sure a part of it is fuelled on hope and it should be while another part is national pride, but on the whole, I think there is unwilful ignorance. I personally hope that the U.S. can climb out of the rubble, but the country is just as propagandised and oppressed as an unfree society run by a completely corrupt/money-grubbing/career climbing goverment of officials along with the support and full backing of a mass media on a multi-level platform ingested severeal different ways through a 24/7 cycle. I appreciate you and your engagement. Wish you nothing but the best and lets hope the next big UFC card is a banger. Peace.
