Note: We state that the Fork-Pack has 3.2 liters of storage in the video. However, this spec was pulled from the Ortlieb USA website where it was mistyped. According to Ortlieb, the proper claimed volumetric specification is 4.1 liters. To solve this, we performed a water fill measurement test and found that it held about 4.5 liters, so 4.1 liters is a relatively safe estimate, albeit slightly conservative.
@johalun3 жыл бұрын
4.5 liters is fully open, right? So in reality at least 1 liter goes away when you close it?

Neil, what would your confidence level be mounting this to a tumbleweed t rack on the back and doing off road bikepacking? (using the three bolts)
@Incorruptus19 ай бұрын
What I would like to see Ortlieb make is a bag system with two fork bags, and a frame bag +4L, as well as a stem bag, +14L, and when you want to unpack the bike, the bags should be able to fit together for easier carrying, or like a back pack. So making a system that can be unmounted and take as a full carrier bag when combining them. To make it easy and theft safe on stops when traveling, and easy to gather unpack etc, which they seem to be able to do. I like their bags and quality.

Another great review. I just discovered these fork bags the other day and plan to purchase now. I've always felt the fork has traditionally been under utilized as a carrying component. I used a band clamp system on my first gravel bike. My new frame now has mounts on the carbon fork. It surprises me to see manufacturers putting out gravel bikes w/o fork mounts?! I have carried water on my fork in the past but I think these bags provide more utility than water bottles. Water belongs in the main triangle and/or on your back imo :-)

For ultra long distance, a tip seems to be to drop the handlebar bag, panniers, *fork bags* and fork waterbottles. Focus on: ● Full frame bag with waterblader and possibly a tube. ● Aerobars with a water bottle between your bars to reduce turbulence. ● A bag behind your butt that sits snuggly under the seat and points backwards. The tailfinn packed full is a good example. However, the tailfinn is expensive for some. You can get a long way by MYOG, which means affordable. Use a traditional rack, a normal gym bag held down with bungies and a plastic lid to stiffen the bottom. Finish the custom rack bag with a tight rain cover to make it a bit more aero and clean looking. The result is an aerodynamic bike without things sticking out or space that creates turbulence. The bags rear position adds weight in the back. This distribution allow you to move your body forward over the aerobars, without the bodyweight creating safety problem. (Oversteering.) How about mounting them on a carbon fork with only 1 eyelet? (1 bolt mount and the second mount with the metal thing?) I dont understand why Ortlieb says no-no for carbon forks. Is it because they are generally tapered from top to bottom and in that sense the bag would eventually slide down and get loose? Or is it because the carbon mold is not designed to be squeezed in any way?
@petergilbert722 жыл бұрын
Has anyone bought these? If so, would you mind measuring the distance between the top bolt and bottom bolt? On the suspension forks on my 20” wheels I’d need them to be within the range 9cm - 11cm apart. Thanks.
@jwidm60284 жыл бұрын
My experience on long gravelly descents using two bolt bottle cages and 1 liter bottles is having to tightened the bolts every mile. Was thinking loctite next time. Did you have that experience with these bags tightened to less than 1nm and no loctite? (PS, love this channel. You're the best.)
@BIKEPACKINGcom4 жыл бұрын
I actually use grease in all of the bolts that enter my frame, I should have mentioned that in this video. They not only keep the bolt from seizing, but it also keeps them in place, it might seem counter intuitive but it works. I will make sure we touch on this in the full review, I've only have the bags for a few weeks but they are not loosening up on me.
