«A smooth acceleration to that abrupt stop» sounds so poetic, I keep hearing that phrase whenever I go fishing
@billgerlach42911 жыл бұрын
Great demonstration. Precise, succinct and extremely clear in its presentation! Thank you!
@orvis10 жыл бұрын
To avoid hitting the ground on the back cast there are a couple of things you should focus on. The first is to make sure you starting with your rod tip close to if not on the water’s surface. Make a smooth acceleration to an abrupt stop in a “up and back position” on your back cast. I have seen and been guilty of lifting the rod at one speed then trying to make an overly aggressive “flick” which usually ends up in a “down and back position” resulting in the line hitting the ground on the back cast. The second thing I look for Is… I watch my back cast when I practice. Open your stance a little when you practice (if your right handed drop your right foot back) so you can see you rod tip stop and watch you line roll out just before you leader turns over begin your forward cast. While your fishing it’s not a bad to watch your back cast from time to time with the exception of casting at moving fish. I hope this helps, Pete

+The Orvis Company If you do a bad cast, do you loose your fly every time? that's a lot of money to be wasting...
@townside_woodcraft8 жыл бұрын
+Jon Fisher no, when I was a kid starting out I had a pretty inconsistent cast and I only occasionally lost a fly. When first starting out you'll hook the grass behind you and rocks etc many more times then you will hook fish

Dear Pete, not only am I a very happy Orvis customer but am the Director of Instruction for our fly fishing club in SE NC. When I work with those new to fly fishing, new to saltwater fly fishing or those wishing to improve their casting, I always suggest they look at every video you have done. Not only do you do a good job explaining a particular aspect of fly fishing but your whole demeanor is that of a man at ease with his equipment. You make it look so easy, which is exactly what I try to encourage them to copy. My line is, “The hardest thing about fly casting is remembering how easy it is.” You are an excellent example of the key to fly fishing- letting the rod and line do 95% of the work. Thank you for making my casting better and my job easier. I cannot think of a better public face of Orvis. Keep up the good work. The Whitefish, Oak Island, NC

Very good casting lesson! I started on the banks of the Kennebunk river in the 80's, standing on the banked shale casting into the river for stripers. When I finally got a hit, I immediately lost it because I had already broken off the hook on the shale behind me back casting. The first striper I ever caught involved my fly line straight down from the rod tip in the river...no cast at all!! I was probably trying to sort out my fly line wrapped around my hand when the striper took my fly. Stripers are the single best starter species ever! Since then I have fished everywhere salt and fresh, Colorado, Montana, Bahamas, Caymans, Florida. My favorite rod is the Orvis Clearwater 6 wgt..great for small stripers, bonefish and trout. The single most exciting fish I have ever hooked up are baby tarpon on a 9 wgt..wish I had landed any of the three I hooked up! Have fun, tight lines!

Im one of those wierd people who has literally put years into hobbies most people havent heard of. From the big ones to the obscure. I got into fly fishing a few weeks ago and I gotta say as someone who is an older man who really hasnt fished AT ALL since I was a child...... This is one the most challenging things to get into starting from absolute zero gear of any kind and zero knowledge of any kind of fishing let alone fly. Ive never done anything in my life that I couldnt get down in a couple weeks but I feel like im no further along after 2500 dollars in gear and waders and months of research. Once I get to the river I just cant seem to get a fish. I wont give up and honestly im happy its not easy cause if it was it wouldnt be rewarding. But man if you arent a fisherman and you jump into fly fishing off the bat? Get ready for some of the hardest learning you will ever do. I think the issue is 99.9% of people assume you have fished so when i ask people for help they talk in riddles about things I dont know. Give me a year Ill have it.

When fishing from a river bank on dry land. Casting straight out into the river and the fly has landed, the river takes your fly down river, say to the far left and now you want to lift and cast straight out in front again. Do you have to pull all your line back in or can you lift, change direction in air and cast out again back in front of you instead of the side from where you lifted.
@GoneFishingCO6 жыл бұрын
Patrick Ryan i would say yes and no. If you have not cast a fly rod a lot than i would pull all the line in. If you have cast a lot you can move that line up stream with a water load cast and than use thay angle to change direction and get it back into the middle of the river. Sorry hard to explain..... Cheers and tight lines

What he does not see is, he is using three pivot points. He is pivoting that rod, not articulating that rod. His pivot points are his wrist, his elbow, and his shoulder. With all this, he is still moving the tip in an arc. You NEED THAT ARC. What he really wants you to do is to keep your tip traveling in a flat plane. A straight line path is impossible but a flat plane is what is. He is correct in one thing....there are many different ways to cast. Catching fish is the goal. I find I like to keep my elbow stuck to my body and only apply as much energy I need fo a twenty to thirty foot cast. I want my line to roll out and settle gently on the water. I took advice from several casting instructors and friends and now I have more fly rods that silver wear in my kitchen. Less is more. Period. What I love in my hand is a 3 weight, 7’-6” ORVIS CLEARWATER. My longest cast is 50 feet. Big deal. At 30 feet, and that’s where the fish are, I can control my fly right into a fishes mouth if I can see it. I keep my elbow tucked in not leaving contact, and use my wrist for the “flick” at the end, a little elbow and follow through. I count my cast like I am counting music. I say out loud.....”ONE AAANNNDDDD (and) TWO. As soon as my fly passes over my head, I wait till I feel the line do a very slight tug and the end, then begin my two.....forward cast and flick. I want to use as little energy as possible to achieve consistency. Now, here’s the thing these instructors do not really get or teach you. ...........It’s accuracy first, then the distance will come. Some of these guys show you how far they can cast, which is ok. It looks nice. But how accurate is it. Go out on your lawn or to a park. Take two small towels that are bright. Place them five feet apart. Then go back 20 feet and cast, keeping the tip of your line in the middle. Do not put a leader on yet. Just use the fly line. After you sort of get it, move the two towels closer together. After a while go back ten more feet to 30 feet from the towels. That’s plenty of distance. Remember, you are working for accuracy first. Be patient, the distance will come all on its own. Relax.....slow down.......less is more. Put as little power in your cast as you need. Only use just enough. Now, in learning, wrap the line around your index finger of the hand you cast with. You will feel it reach it’s apex in you finger. After a while you will be able to anticipate that moment. Then, hold your free line in your opposite hand and try to concentrate to feel that little tug in your hand. You will find, some of these instructors on here are really good casters, but can not really teach. Practice, practice, practice. Join a club. Watch others. Relax and have fun.

I am a beginner not novice. I have practiced for about 2hrs total. I just purchased Orvis Hydros iv on a TFO BVK 9' 8 wt rod with 8wt S.Anglers redfish warm line. I have a fairly nice loop and cast at about 55'. However, my leader (9') falls to the ground like a streamer of ribbon. Practicing with yarn...and it just flutters down. Is this normal? Should I be concerned with just the line rolling out nicely or both the line and leader even though I am not casting even (flyweight)? If this is wrong, how might I correct.?I guess I should say that I have fished with spin casting rigs for 40 years. 55yrs old. I do understand rod loading and some fly technique. So I am not new to all the dynamics. Suggestions by anyone please.

Okay...I am new to fly fishing. I have an 8 weight Rod/Reel for sight casting for redfish. My leader is 9ft and tippet is 4ft. My dilemma is that if I’m not using my fly rod until I see a redfish, How do I get the length of the leader and tippet through the rod eyelets in order to start stripping out fly line and casting to the redfish?
@TheRealJaded2 жыл бұрын
Leader should be 9' you don't need tippet unless you've cut a few flies off and need another foot of tippet to make the leader a whole 9' again. Your leader is 4 feet too long.

how do you stop the line from hitting the floor on the back cast.
@cgdurant16 жыл бұрын
Make an abrupt stop at the 11 O'clock Position, Pause, Let the line straighten out behind you. As soon as it does, make a forward cast to abrupt stop at 1 O'clock position. then let the line sink down to the water surface... When the line hits ground behind you it is either going past the 11 O'clock position, or you are starting the forward cast to soon or too late. You should start the forward cast just as the line completely straightend out behind you... hope that helps

Hey Pete, for some reason when fly fishing smaller flies, my basic cast seems to cast backwards and forward smoothly. But in cases where I'm fishing a streamer or a weighted cone head flies, my basic forward and backward cast isn't so smooth. Is there a possible way to make these streamers/cone flies cast smooth too? Maybe the rod and line could make a difference? I'm using a 9 weight.
@ricknelson78242 жыл бұрын
When using weighted flies you need to have a more open loop and the timing of your forward cast needs to be made in a precise timing. Try a delay forward cast.
