Orvis Jacket, caught on fire then restored

This jacket was a mess, luckily the owner didn’t get hurt. The heated vest shorted out and it caught on fire. Burned the vest along with the jacket.

Although it happened more than 20 years ago, I still remember the guy who used the slant zipper front pocket of his cowhide biker jacket as an ashtray at parties. The lack of air and cowhide leather, put the embers and butts out without a problem. Everything was fine, until the night that he was wearing his new jacket and had not checked that the inner layer of the pocket was leather. What followed was like something out of a 1930's comedy film. First people started commenting on the wisp's or smoke around his neck, but it took a while before he realised what was happening. The moment when he realised and unzipped his jacket, then tried to casually put the smouldering lining and padding out with his hand was so funny. The funniest moment was when he had to take it off and let his girlfriend rub it out against the leg of her jeans to save damaging the carpet. Fortunately Levi's don't burn He must have felt like such an idiot.

Steve, there is SO much involved in each custom repair you do. Every November-April I take a leathercraft class locally with a gentleman whose business is much like yours, and every time I realize that he/you must know the skills of a tailor, seamstress, cobbler AND leather crafter/jobber plus have all the necessary equipment, supplies, and know-how. I'm getting a bit too old to be learning all of this and to be able to acquire the necessary equipment myself, but still the process intrigues me. What I find hardest is envisioning how two-dimensional cutouts of leather turn into three-dimensional items and breaking down the complex task of building something elaborate in leather into steps that occur in the necessary and proper order. I've yet to learn how to use a sewing machine and dread just the 'How do I feed the thread through this crazy thing?' aspect much less how I maintain or fix something on the machine when something goes wrong with it. And I'm just too slow and perfectionistic to make my time invested in projects become a viable business, plus one needs a broader range of social skills for a leather business' varied customers than I have. All of this is my way of saying I understand enough of what you do to be very appreciative of looking over your shoulder in these videos to learn whatever I can.. My thanks to a a true multitasking genius--Don in Indiana.

Hi, I love to watch a master craftsman at work. As a seamstress, when I saw the pattern weight, I thought it was from the land of the giants, huge! The little strip of scrap fabric, the tab, glued into the coat hem and attached to the pocket lining, is called a "French tack".

I think you should continue to sharpen the disposable blades in the ripper! Waste not want not!!! I find that when I make a mistake when sewing, the pathetic seam rippers are not strong enough to cut some of the threads I use. And they are nuts to try and sharpen! You keep on keeping on!!! 👏

Well Steve this was a hard one. If I was the owner of that jacket I would have contacted the manufacture if that heated vest.Took pictures and made sure they bought me a new jacket.There was only do much you could do with that.The jacket was worn you did your best.
