Great vid Tom. If you underline a 4 weight with a 3 but extend more line, is it not the same? Will your longer length of 3 be the same as the 4?

In really heavy winds in Patagonia, I’ve had success overlining my 6wt with an 8wt line. That probably says more about my casting deficiencies than the wind

Leaders are measured by the thickness (labeled in "X") of the thinnest part of the leader (end/tippet) with a lower number (1X) being thicker than a higher number (6X). Leader size is more based on fly size, the smaller the fly the thinner the leader (i.e. 6X) while the bigger the fly the thicker the leader (1X for example) you would use. You can use any size leader on any size fly line, it is the size of the fly that determines what size leader you use.

​@@kingsleyzissou2356This is misleading, as there is a limit to the size, or weight, of a fly for a given rod and line weight. You can not effectively cast, say, a #6 hopper using a 2X leader (#6/3 = 2X) on a 3-wt rod. That's just too much fly for such a light line. By the same token, you wouldn't use a 9-wt rod to throw a #18 dry fly on a 6X leader, at least not if you're after a delicate presentation.
