Thanks, from Australia. Always enjoy your tips. Just back from a trip to our Alpine area. Fishing was tough, coming into summer, with lower than normal water levels. Turned my trip around, with a couple of nice rainbows swinging soft hackles.

We typically use 3 wet flies for this method and sometimes 4 here in the uk and more so in north of England and in my patch Scotland and in particular with spiders ( soft hackles); but there are no hard and fast rules as far as I’m concerned just enjoy the experience and thanks Tom for your input and knowledge.

Tom did you tie the dropper and point fly to a standard 9ft tapered leader?

So that triple surgeons knot wont slip down to the bottom fly if you hook a fish on the upper one?
@walkswithrods375723 күн бұрын
Nope! It stays put. The shorter tag end for your 'top' fly is just a continuation of the original tippet through the knot, and the non-tag end is the same as any other tippet you've tied to before. No increased risk of the knot slipping. 👍

Not a bad knot for this. A dropper loop would be better, same concept different knot. Actually just a variation of a blood knot but tied much differently

Oh I ment to add we would normally fish upstream 😊

People typically swing soft hackles; can you swing standard nymphs too? What other types of flies could be swung effectively?
@danielsinner4767Ай бұрын
You *could* swing standard nymphs, though it's not really what they're designed for, but might imitate a "swimmer" mayfly for example. Streamers would be another fly that are effectively swung as is often done in the salmon/steelhead world (where trout are a somewhat regular "by catch").
