OS FS-52 Four Stroke RC Glow Engine Reassembly Part 1

In this video I reassemble the OS Engines FS-52 four stroke glow engine. When assembling an engine keep everything clean and lubricated. Any dirt will be trapped and grind expensive parts into scrap over time. Oil is necessary in the crankcase of a model four stroke at start up after cleaning or rebuild, as it takes time for enough oil to accumulate in the engine. Most manufacturers don't say anything about this as the first starts are usually with a very rich setting, but I don't think it makes any sense to start an engine dry. The only other note is to be sure that bearings seat properly when reinstalled or they may bind when the prop is tightened, loading and probably ruining the bearings very quickly. I had to split the video into two parts, so look for the other parts in my videos.

I have an OS48 FS with a broken cylinder head, purely cosmetic but I will keep these videos favourited!

Yes, for the most part all of the OS engines are the same. Only the larger engines use a different valve keeper. Thanks!

As long as you are careful about keeping things clean and follow proper procedure, they can be taken apart. I wouldn't do it just for fun with a new engine. The last thing you want to happen is drop and damage a part or lose a part.

Rarely does something go wrong. Valves should be checked after break in. After that maybe once a year. If you put it away for some time, follow the instructions to clean and preserve the engine to prevent it from gumming up.

@MaxwellForce I add oil to the rocker well before running them as OS engines are typically shipped dry. Use after run oil as instructed in the manual. The corrosion is problematic in both two stroke and four stroke glow engines.

Oil works it's way past the valve stems and lifter bores. When I have one apart I always add oil in the rocker well, to make sure there is plenty. Some newer OS engines have an active method of getting oil to the top end.

does it use fuel
@rcdieselrc

I'm not sure what you're asking. There is oil in the fuel, but I add oil to the crankcase before starting a rebuilt/cleaned or new engine so that oil is already there.

@quietfamily The advantages exist even at this size. Only the smallest glow four stroke engines, smaller than.40ci or 6.5cc have valves of the same size.

Yes, it could be done that way. I've done it both ways. I found that parts are more difficult to align when the piston is restricted by the sleeve.

Hi, Would it be possible to partly insert the piston just past the ring into the sleeve then slide the sleeve into the engine . then insert the piston pin through the hole as you have shown ?,, Cheers.....

@spitfire9341 At 3:42 in the clip the dot on the cam should be behind the rod I'm holding with the piston at top dead center.

Only one remark: when I install the piston, I first insert the piston partly into the liner, such that the wristpin hole is still uncovered, but the ring is allready in the bore. Then lower the liner including piston into the crankcase untill the wristpin hole and the access hole line up. Turn the crank untill the small end bearing also lines up. Then insert the wristpin, and push down the liner home. I do it this way because I have damaged (burred) the ringgroove once when trying to wiggle the piston into the liner (3:05 and further in your video). If the ring has been replaced, sometimes the relaxed ring is a bit too wide to wiggle it in like on the video.
@rcdieselrc
@rcdieselrc 5 жыл бұрын
Bert, I could see that happening, though I've never experienced it myself.
@rigididiot

True, the clones are more susceptible to this, as usually the bevelled edge in the bottom of the liner is machined out less smooth, That's where OS shows its difference in manufacturing.

The oil I put in will be enough. More won't hurt anything, it just gets blown out the breather. OS ships engines dry. I add oil before running a new engine the first time.

FS-91 is identical except for split type valve cotters. If you haven't worked with these before, remove them inside a transparent plastic bag so they don't fly away on you. They can be very tight, so you'll need a tool to push the spring retainer.

I have just bought an OS 30 FS surpass, lovely little engine. Is it necessary to put some lubricant on the rockers/valves and the camshaft before the first startup, or do I just start it up? I’m planning on running it with 18% synthetic oiled and 2-3% castor oil, with about 7 % nitro. How do I protect the engine from corrosion from the nitro, or is this not a problem with four stroke engines?

Improperly adjusted valves can result in poor running or no compression. After the break in period the valves should be checked once a year. Setting the valves is explained in Part 2 at 3:20

Looks like I kinked one of the piston plastic retainers, and it fell off. So one side of the wrist pin is exposed to metal while the other has the plastic retainer. Any ideas where I can find replacements, or some kind of solution for it. Am dead in the water if I cant find a retainer for the wrist pin.

The wrist pin includes the pads and they are reasonable. Stock at Tower looks like it varies right now.

This is a model aircraft engine. OS Engines does not produce this particular engine, but make many others. Any radio control hobby store would be a good place to look for engines like this.
