Meanwhile, I’m Still Here is a better acclaimed international flick also nominated for Best Picture that might have a chance of winning the former alongside Fernanda Torres for Best Lead Actress based on all of the recent support surrounding it.

You could argue that Zoe is the lead and Karla the supporting character, but you would be blatantly wrong. This is like saying Nick Caraway is the main character of Great Gatsby and Gatsby is a supporting character. The story is about Emilia Perez, she is the central character, she is the one that drives the plot forward with her decisions throughout - she is the protagonist, while Rita just serves as audience's introduction to Rita, then gets no development, has barely any motivation except at the beginning, does whatever Emilia tells her, and makes no decisions of her own that affect the plot. My problem with Zoe winning so much isn't that she's not supporting - she is - it's that I was unimpressed, though that's probably not her fault - her character was very bland and underwritten.

Thanks for the comment and opinion! Very well said. And I agree that Zoe Saldana’s character was bland and underwritten, to use your words. On the lead vs. supporting front, I would say you can certainly argue Nick Caraway is the main character of The Great Gatsby. And many people have, for many, many years. Similarly, the wizard is not the main character in the Wizard of Oz, despite sharing his name with the book/movie. So, while there is certainly a case to be made (in fact you made the case very eloquently in your comment) that Zoe Saldana is not the lead character. There is also a case to be made that she is or is at least one of the leads. You have a valid point to be sure. But that doesn’t meant the counterpoint is “blatantly wrong.” Thanks again for sharing your opinion! These kinds of discussions are what make the film community so fun!

Before saying anything about the best picture possible winner, you should actually see the films, guys, I mean all of them, not just 6 or 8 out of 10

If only we had the luxury! We live in a small market and we are blessed to get access to many advanced screenings but not all films. PLUS, we don’t know what will be nominated until they announce it. I would venture to say 80-90% of those joining in the Oscars nominations discussions online have not seen all 10 or even the majority, especially since many have not had wide releases yet. That’s why we choose to be transparent about what we have and haven’t seen. Is it possible our opinions will change? Absolutely! But we are giving our opinions based on what we HAVE seen.
