I agree with your opinion that us in the UK shouldn't expect anyone else especially in the US to watch Better Man. However, there are a number of Americans who have been pretty arrogant/ ignorant making the not watching Better Man their personality and making fun of a movie they haven't seen and even seem mad at its existence which is baffling. I think certain minorities of fans on both sides can do some self reflection of how they respond to a movie like this

I genuinely hold reeltok awards in higher regard than the Oscars or really any of these award ceremonies. Its an infinitely more accurate representation of cinemas accomplishments both nominated and voted on by people who truly love movies.

I actually think it's great that the Oscars are nominating these movies that are not out to general audiences. I don't mean that in an elitist "the best pieces of artwork are unpopular among the crowds", but in a "thank god the Oscars, despite a lot of studios' failings in distribution, are putting these high quality movies on the spotlight and therefore forcing the studios to actually distribute the film and making great art more accessible" way. If not for its Oscar nominations/Golden Globe win, most people wouldn't even dream of watching I'm Still Here, and that would be such a pity considering the masterpiece that it is You guys *really* should watch it before saying there's nothing exciting in the BP line up. Like Past Lives last year, this is a quietly beautiful film that I'm thrilled to see getting its flowers. Same goes for Fernanda Torres. It's as far from an Oscar bait performance as it could possibly be (something you can only get outside of the English speaking world, since those who don't speak it are those who never come close to dreaming about an Oscar)

So glad that George enjoyed “Wolf Man” as much as I did! It doesn’t do anything spectacular with the Wolf Man mythos, but I appreciated the more realistic, grounded, and gradual disease that lycanthropy was portrayed in the film as opposed to the usual mysticism of most renditions. The sticking point for most seems to be the design of the Wolf Man itself, and I think it works for the story they’re trying to tell, but I can understand if it’s a letdown to those more familiar with werewolf lore. Still a good time, and while I can understand the hate I thought it did just enough right to be a good time overall. 👍👍

the whole "academy being made up of mostly actors skewed the nominations" thing was not accurate because only people in said field vote on the nominees. Actors are not deciding the best sound nominees they can only vote on a winner after the nominees are decided.

Fun fact: out of the 601 best picture nominees on Letterboxd, Emilia Perez is THE lowest rated. It was a bit higher but has fallen this week. I think it’s due to the fact that it pissed off everyone (half the people hate the wokeness, and the other half hate the stereotyping) and then there’s me who’s not necessarily offended by what’s in the movie, but just thinks it’s a really shitty musical that’s always scratching the surface.

George, you’ve gotta be consistent with your Oscars hate. You didn’t say a peep about how they “suck” when Oppenheimer was winning a ton of awards last year. People care about the Oscars because they have a hundred year legacy that has often championed and celebrated great cinema. Let’s not act like they’re awarding Best Picture to bad movies every single year.
