Here's the beef. No filler, no artificial ingredients. Make no mistake, every jazz pianist that ever walked the face of the earth wishes they could play like this. I met him when I was 12 and he made the Maitre' D allow me into the club which had an age restricition. A true gentleman. And a true genius.

Horrible editing on this video. Why chop it up like this? At 1:14 Nils Pedersen is about to take a solo and its deleted. This is the opposite of jazz music values of expression. Oscar Peterson would have hated it. Anyway, here are the tunes they are playing on the original concert: Salute To Bach Who Can I Turn To Blues Etude Yours Is My Heart Alone Falling In Love With La Belle Province Nigerian Marketplace Cakewalk Skylark - My Foolish Heart Perdido Caravan

I have been listening to Oscar Peterson since the age of 10,and since then I have never looked back,all those years ago when I first listened to him at 10,I was awestruck,and at the age of 55 it still has the supernatural magic.The real difference in his playing compared to others is that it has a superior finesse and perfection,every note and phrase is played with care,I would describe him as an analogue player,analogue means everything captured to perfection,a true genius.

Did any jazz trio in history ever swing harder than these guys? Peterson always delivered. I had the great pleasure of seeing him play live, just a few feet away from the piano at a college concert once. What an experience that was! He was first class all the way. That night he basically gave the audience the history of jazz piano; he played ragtime, swing, be-bop...even a little Chopin!

Quite apart from having a formidable technique these guys offer a brilliant example of an ingredient that is all too often missing in today's jazz! The word is joy! The reason that this is so important is that if the musicians themselves don't feel it when they play ,they won't be able to pass it on and communicate successfully with their audience!

First saw O.P. at McGill University in 1956 then at Place des Arts in Montreal in late 70's with Ella Fitzgerald. Consider him to have been and stil recognized as heads and shoulders above any other jazz pianist. What magical performance with Niels also the greatest on bass. Also was and am a great fan of Erroll Garner, another genius.

I was lucky to see Oscar at London House in Chicago where we were seated just a few feet dead center in front of the stage. He is my all time favorite jazz pianist, Garner second as you say. I just can't love Evans and others, decent and good as they were. Saw Garner in montreal, unfortunately sitting quite away from the bandstand as I recall. Loved it.
@algonquin18327 жыл бұрын
Evans plays a modern classical style that is lumped into the jazz category. George Shearing, Andre Previn and others like them played modern. Jazz is personified by Oscar Peterson, Charlie Parker.
