I saw Ray Brown at the HK Jazz club in/or around 2005. He was utterly dominant - sonically, musically and personally. He filled the room - with magnificent tone, magical flowing endlessly inventive lines and, well, with sheer professorial arrogance. He was THAT good! The standing ovation as he walked out thru the crowd was met with a very quiet, self satisfied smile only....evidently, you have to be cool as a cucumber to play with Oscar!

Masterful gem...thanks WOJ. This was the time when I first got to hear OP with Ed and Ray, I'll always thing of that combo as the best. I'd love to hear others' opinions.

Ray Brown, best bassist and Ed Thigpen best drummer to accompany Oscar. NHO Pedersen I never got into and I don't say that in any kind of mean way. The Great man himself liked him and being a professional nobody I am not critical of the musical journey the greats take. But as a bassist, the style, timing and sheer inventiveness of Ray Brown was unmatched.
