funny, because I also get goosebumps at that part around 8:35. Peterson also did that thing with his Hymn to Freedom in the most viewed video of it on youtube, which also give me goosebumps everytime i hear it.

@@ymousanon4615 It's a hypothesized thing in physics, the big crunch. Cosmic inflation runs out of steam and ultimately reverses, 20 billion years or so later (I guess) it all ends as the universe is drawn back into its Gravitational Singularity form.

Oscar Peterson is transcendental in a multitude of ways. He gets you high without drugs. High on life itself. God has a special place for people like him.
@CoffeeAndPaul Жыл бұрын
You can put his playing right up there with the World's virtuoso players. His hands weren't just some of the quickest in piano history, his mind was even quicker & his improvisations are induplicable to... 80-90% of the World's greatest jazz pianists?? He was a very special musician, rare for not just craftsmanship & pride in his work but also for his congeniality to fellow musicians. He really cared about all music, not just his own.

I think both gentlemen were quite happy with each other. Especially Dexter was in a blowing mood. Right from the beginning of 'Polka Dots' he took some real harmonic risks and I really appreciate that.

And let's not forget the awesome bass player? Not mentioned in the credits, but almost certainly Sam Jones (Webster, Gillespie etc and of course Cannonball Adderley) who joined with Bobby Durham in the new trio (1966-70) following Ed Thipgen and Ray Brown. What a fabulous bass player he was. A lovely session altogether and so good to see two greats, Dexter and Oscar, working together with such swing.

Canada represents with its best (other than Nelson Symonds) and Dexter, no disrespect Montreal, takes all the marbles. This last solo is beyond belief. When you use the term, chops, it refers to what Dexter's got, not what Oscar's got, which is flash

CBC production? Dexter was probably playing at the Town Tavern that week. We used to get a lot of shows like this when CBC was a power. I believe I see a young trombone player amongst the students in the audience.

Dex will always be in my top favorites and I don't mean this in a bad way, but if you look at the DG video clips from '63-4 he still looks so young and has that sly DG smile which we all loved. But only 5 years later, here he looks like he had aged 20 years. What happened? Was it addiction or bad health?
@americahassecrets8 жыл бұрын
+Mark Steinke I was with Dex we had just finished the album one flight up I xo wrote credits don't matter being a part - same with Lee Morgan others we misssad it was a mistake a lot of musicians make but can never diminish his talent and that mannerism

The second tune is kind of best example of Oscar Petersons ars poerica. Not only he was the greatest player, but he also made the other members of the trio shine. Take the bassists: Ray Brown, here Sam Jones, later Dave Young and NHØP, and listen how the arrangements are set up like taylor made for them. Often different versions af the same tune over the decades illustrate this Take For example Reunion Blues. And the same true for drummers. Take Tin Tin Deo as an example, played by Ed Thipen, or Bobby Durham (the drummer in this record) and later Periods Lewis Nash. (Idont know if Martin Drew played it...) Sorry this comment getting too long ;-)
