Basketball documentary on legendary NBA player - Oscar Robertson.
Oscar Palmer Robertson (born November 24, 1938), nicknamed "The Big O", is an American former National Basketball Association player who played for the Cincinnati Royals and Milwaukee Bucks. The 6 ft 5 in (1.96 m), 220 lb (100 kg) Robertson played the shooting guard/point guard position, and was a twelve-time All-Star, eleven-time member of the All-NBA Team, and one-time winner of the MVP award in fourteen professional seasons. He is the only player in NBA history to average a triple-double for a season. He was a key player on the team which brought the Bucks their only NBA title in the 1970--71 NBA season. His playing career, especially during high school and college, was plagued by racism.
For his outstanding achievements, Robertson was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980, and was voted one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1996. The United States Basketball Writers Association renamed their college Player of the Year Award the Oscar Robertson Trophy in his honor in 1998, and he was one of five people chosen to represent the inaugural National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame class in 2006.
Robertson was also an integral part of the Oscar Robertson suit of 1970. The landmark NBA antitrust suit, named after the then-president of the NBA Players' Association, led to an extensive reform of the league's strict free agency and draft rules and, subsequently, to higher salaries for all players.

This guy was so dope, he's one of the top guards of the scoring list and didn't even hit a single 3 pointer, they didn't even have a 3 point line. That's OG.

How silly can you be, three pointers do not that add to your scoring average. The greatest scorer of all time Jabbar has how many and how many does Karl Malone and Wilt Chamberlain have. Michael Jordan does have many three pointers but they were not his main weapon either.
@Megadondada
@Megadondada 10 жыл бұрын
I just mean as a guard, not as a center obviously. I'm obviously aware of the Jabbars ect. Guards tend to traditionally get most of their points from the perimeter which happens to include 3's. Jordan was a better jump shooter, could drive so relied more on that and didn't develop his 3FG more until later in his career, but he still did get lots of points from 3s. You can't deny how good Oscar was. Man scored a lot of points.

My grandfather and my father use to tell stories about Oscar and they always said he was the greatest player he ever seen in person. Hearing stories of him averaging a triple double and dominating a game that was back then a predominantly white sport was my childhood. That's why I always have Oscar in my Top 10 players of all time though I never had the privilege to see him play. I think him and Elgin Baylor definitely get forgotten sometime when we talking about the greatest players.

@@unclequack5445 The players in the 60s would get annihilated by a top college in the 2000s. Only Wilt would have success, but he would need to improve his footwork, shooting form, and ball handling. Centers who can't handle the ball get very little playing time, these days. I think West and Oscar could still play today. But they would need to improve their dribbling, quickness, shooting style, shooting range, and defensive techniques. Russell would find it hard to get playing time. Maybe he could be like Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz. My problem with Oscar was that his game didn't change to suit the conditions. Did he ever take over a game in the fourth quarter the Jerry West did or Sam Jones did? Not really. That was not how he played, Subsequently, the Royals faltered in the 4th quarters of playoff games. Even with the champion Bucks, an overweight Oscar relied heavily on Kareem and others... rarely did he score in the clutch.

Those of us who've had the privilege to see him play know how great a player he was. Those of us who've had the chance to meet him and talk to him know how good a person he is. I count myself fortunate to be both. He wasn't flashy;his game had substance. If you want to say that he was simply bigger and stronger than his opponents, that he lacked athleticism (?), then, you must say the same about Shaq. He played guard how Duncan played center and power forward. No flash, just results. I believe Jordan was better, but Oscar is, beyond doubt, one of the very best who ever played. In his later years, he still outplayed younger, quicker opponents. If West, Russell, Cousy, Chamberlain, Hondo, and other peers, have high regards for him, it's because he performed and earned that regard.

Robertson's largely right. I still watch the NBA, cuz I love basketball, but it's a damned shadow of its former self. Defense is fucking abysmal. I'm watching Clippers/Kings right now, and defense is all but nonexistent. Same as GS vs. Orlando. Most everybody likes to think that their time is the best; no way anything from the past can be better than the same thing in the present, right? Is the NFL as physical as it used to be? No. Neither is boxing. Time goes by and the powers that be see that healthier star players generate more revenue from fans, and passive fans (esp. women, an ever increasing demographic in sports revenue) want offense more than defense. So, rule changes are made to reflect that reality. It's all about the chizzah people. Did you forget that, Stevie?

Trey: You're right in what you say, but it goes further. In all 3 of the big sports, they've changed the rules to encourage more offense. Basketball; 3 point line, no hand checking, player can palm the ball and take steps all day without getting called. Baseball: Juiced the ball, juiced the players, lowered the mound, built smaller parks, added the DH, reduced the strike zone, and told pitchers they can't throw inside anymore. Football; put a force field around the quarterback, moved the hashmarks in so a sweep can go to the strong or weak side, can't touch a receiver 5 yards beyond the LOS. All to get more butts in the seats and more TV money.

Here's the thing. Robinson was the best player of that era, physically and mentally. Period. However, a team sport is about THE TEAM being a winner, not about what a great player a certain individual is. Like Michael Jordan, Robinson needed a better supporting cast of players and a willingness to use them. Remember, Michael Jordan scored 54 points off of Boston, and lost the game. When Scotty Pippen and the other great players of that time joined The Bulls and Jordan started PASSING THE BALL that team became unbeatable. Robinson needed to do the same, and THAT is what Bob Cousey was trying to do with him and the team. It's not that anyone knew more about basketball than Robinson, it's that sometimes a player is too close to the tree to see the forest around him.

@@no-bozos Jordan did more with less than any player in history. Look how many Hall of Famers Wilt, Russell, LeBron, Magic, Kareem, Kevin Durant, and Tim Duncan played with. Now, look at who Jordan had as teammates. Only Pippen was great. The rest of Jordan's teammates were somewhat one-dimensional or a little past their prime. Oscar didn't have many great teammates, either, on the Royals. But there was enough talent on the team that you would think that he could have gone to, at least, ONE NBA Finals. He did always lose to the Celtics. As great as Oscar was during his era, he may have lacked the confidence to win. When he finally won with the Bucks, it was reported that Oscar said he never thought he would win an NBA championship.

When it comes down to it, Oscar's stats in the fast-paced game of the 60s were as empty as Russell Westbrooks. Pete was an entertaining player before injuries cut short his pro career but he was never close to the player that Oscar was. Pete shot a lot but made less than league percentage of shots, and rarely drew fouls. For his career, Pete took 14,025 shots and scored 15,948 points - 1.1 points per shot. Oscar took 19,620 shots and scored 26,710 points -- 1.4 points per shot. So as a scorer, Oscar was 27% more prolific. When you consider that Oscar was also a great defender, who led the league in assists six times and who averaged double digit rebounds his first five years, it's no wonder Oscar made 1st team all-NBA nine times while Pete did so only twice.
