repdoparin Ganhou do Dream Team? kkkkkkk Tá sabendo legal ein fera?

Come on Oscar is very famous and well recognized in Brazil. Unfortunately Soccer and Volleyball gets more attention because Brazil wins championships and Olympic gold medals in those sports. I grew up watching Oscar and I remember after the Pan Am game against USA kids were playing Ball 🏀 on the streets like crazy. Basketball became a huge fever but unfortunately the next generations didn’t delivery and Basketball eventually lost its momentum slowly.

The story behind why Oscar Schmidt did not play in the NBA was not because he did not want to play in the NBA, but because at that time, players considered pros were banned from participating in the Olympic Games under the rules of the Olympic Committee at the time. If the Oscar were for the NBA he would have to give up the Brazilian national team. He preferred aside the dream of playing in the NBA to continue defending the national team in the Olympics. He was well aware that he would lose a lot of money, since NBA salaries were far superior to what he received in the European leagues. So it was an extremely patriotic option. The biggest dream of Oscar, more than playing in the NBA was to give an Olympic medal to Brazil. Now, I do not know why European leagues were not considered professional. But, the fact is that they were not, since he participated in the Olympic games and played in the Italiana. Such Olympic rules were dropped when Oscar was near his 36 years old and NBA players were allowed to participate in the Olympics. For instance, the American dream team. But Oscar did not want to play NBA because of his age.

Yes, because back then to play in the Olympics you had to be "amateur" status and playing in the NBA would void his eligibility. Which is funny because every other country was using "Club" players who, like Oscar, were getting paid to play for a club team. I never understood it but somehow that wasn't considered to be a true "pro" league at that time.

There were a couple of great International players that refused to go to the NBA because of that rule. The other day I read about the Boston Celtics being interested in Drazen Dalipagic somewhere in the mid 70s. They even invited him to work out with them where he literally dominated the likes of Dave Cowens or John Havlicek.

Saw him play since 1979. The only other country in latinamerica who could beat brazil once in a while was Puerto Rico (and Oscar was just devastiating in scoring). Saw the game against U.S.A. and his performance came as no surprise at all. Brazil had a second all aound player in Marcel de Souza who scored 31 points. He always played shadowed by Oscar. The game before he scored 38. The two of them were the two best tandem of scoring forwards of basketball on the world stage.

I'm very happy for Brazilian basketball and for not NBA players. This election is a great honor not only for the legend of Oscar Schmidt, even for the basketball leagues around the world, apart from the NBA. I'm from Spain, especifically from Murcia, and Oscar scored 11 three point shots against my favourite team, the CB Murcia in 1994. It was the all time three point shots scored in the ACB (the Spanish league) until a few years ago. In my view, I only can say thank you, Oscar, for everything that you gave for the game.

If Oscar developed his abilities to the fullest in the NBA (pro level), maybe he could ended up in a level similar to Reggie Miller. A durable star 3pt specialist. But being the greatest player in the olympics history is not a bad resume also, maybe even better. After all, Steph Curry is on pace to break every other 3P specialist records.Oscar's records in the olympics were really impressive, almost unbeatable.

NO doubt Oscar Schmidt would have thrived in the NBA. He would have scored tons and likely ended up in the Hall of Fame. The question for him would have been defense. Sure, some great players have been defensive liabilities (Nash, Harden, etc.), and Oscar may have been OK. Bird, who he's often compared to, was a very good defensive player before the injuries piled up. We'll never know!

He was made for the NBA of today where shooting has become an art and allot of guards pull up from 30.... He’s be a better version of Klay Thompson today!

Oscar Schmidt former Brazilian basketball player: He trained, trained and trained. And when I was really tired… I trained a little more. / "The limit was what I trained, you can't train more than I did. I made 1,000 pitches a day during my whole life, apart from training. This Holy Hand thing isn't true, it's Hand Trained"
