The list of co-signees provided to Variety Monday morning covers a broad swath of the industry including actors (Debra Messing, Tovah Feldshuh), executives (Gary Barber, Gail Berman), creators (Amy Sherman-Palladino), directors (Eli Roth, Rod Lurie), producers (Lawrence Bender, Amy Pascal, Hawk Koch, Sherry Lansing) and representatives (UTA’s Jake Fenton, Gersh’s Jeffrey Greenberg, attorney Craig Emmanuel). The director of the Academy award winning film about the Holocaust, The Zone of Interest, Jonathan Glazer, was truly courageous when he referred to the horrific killing in Gaza in his acceptance speech. Glazer said that "all his choices in his film were made not to look at what we did then ( in Nazis Germany) but to look at what we do now". In 1930's and 40's Germany, like today, people were scared to speak out against what was happening to the Jewish people because the Nazis controlled the government and the media and they silenced and brainwashed the people. With their massive propaganda machine, the constant government lies about the Jewish people spread throughout the country. There was enormous pressure to agree with the lies or keep silent. If people spoke out, they could lose their jobs, livelihoods, homes, etc. It was so difficult to even question the lies and propaganda and speaking out and doing the right thing came with huge consequences that many people were not able or willing to endure. So men, women and children were slaughtered on a daily basis. People were trapped and were starved to death. Many people said nothing and did nothing. Many people were brainwashed and believed that killing Jews was the right thing to do, as crazy as that sounds. Many people just didn't care, it wasn't their problem. Many people actively scorned the Jewish people, ridiculed them, and blamed them for their horrific circumstances. And yet, there were many brave, honorable and very courageous people like Mr. Glazer, who resisted the pressure to be silent and spoke out. There were people who protested, gave the Jewish people food, helped them hide or escape at their own personal risk. Like Albania, a Muslim country, decided to refused to hand over their Jewish population to the Nazis and 2,000 Jewish people were saved. It's strange how history repeats itself without people even noticing. Thank you Mr. Glazer and thank you to all the celebrities who wore red pins at the Oscar's in support of the Palestinians who are being slaughtered everyday with US bombs and are starving to death without food. If one cares about the Gazans, then straight after Oct 7th there should have been mass calls from the Palestinian diaspora saying that Oct 7 was Not In Our Name and signs produced saying Release The Israeli Hostages Now! There’s nothing anti semitic or wrong to say that you want a ceasefire or a state for Palestine but adding in things like “genocide, apartheid, colonisation” is anti semitic and defeats the cause. It is a huge problem for the militaries of the world. This is exactly what I have been struggling with. I used to question how could they have let 5700 millions of J ews get k illed. It wasn't just the Nazi Germans but it was all over Europe. The truth is they were living in a ripe environment for hate and Xenophobia so much so that Americans turned them away when they came in their boats to their shores and Europeans helped the Nazi by giving them intels on their whereabouts.
