When I was 32 and living in London UK, the boss of the company for which I was working together with the lawyer of the company did a runner with a huge amount of money. I lost everything. Then, I decided not to work for anybody else, ever again. I moved to a different country, started very small and within 10 years I had a little empire of my own. I worked 14 hours a day. It was damned hard but I've never looked back. Life will knock us down but we can choose whether or not to stand back up. There's always a way.

Reputedly, every actor who'd ever worked with him said that Rooney was the best actor with whom they'd ever worked. If this acceptance speech was extemporaneous, then it is elegant and brilliant. (Having Bob Hope, an Oscar Eminence Grise himself, present to Rooney was inspired.)

Mickey was such a talent and I thank you so much for posting this. You can also see how truly moved people like Dustin Hoffman and George Scott are. Wow is all I can say. Anyone whoever speaks of him said "he had the ability to do ANYTHING" he was so talented. Played drums and other instruments, sings, dances acts. Others looked on in awe. He was "limited" only by his stature and how Jack Warner saw him. Surely after coming back from service there was a place for him. I know his personal life was the stuff of tabloids, but so what. SOMEONE went to see those many movies and liked them and many people in that town liked HIM. Mickey somebody UP THERE like you too!

I dont remember Mickey when he first started out, but definitely remember the award shows like this from back in the day. True Hollywood legends appearing onstage. Mickey was so appreciative and humble here. And didnt shy away from how he went from most popular star at age 20 to no one wanted him at age 40. Cant help relate it to current events though. If someone had said to me, especially back then, that an A-list star would walk up onstage during the proceedings, punch someone, walk calmly back to their seat, throw out profanity laced expletives (feeling entitled that yes im going to do this) whod have believed it. And the irony of ironies, later wins the best actor award. How far weve fallen.
