Like MIchelle in that film but she should have won for the Fabulous Baker Boys. Thompson was the clear winner for Howard's End. One of the few actors to win all of the major critics awards (NY, LA, National Board of Review, and National Society of Film Critics). Interestingly enough, her wonderful performance in The Remains of the Day, was up against Holly Hunter in The Piano, who also won all four of those top awards, and I might add, they both also won the Globe, which in my humble opinion, mean less, given they tend to judge by star power, less than actual acting.

British actors are always humble when it comes to awards and British actresses don't seem to win in Best Actress Oscars that much. From 1980 to 2005 there are only 2 British actresses won leading category : Jessica Tandy and Emma Thompson.

Emma Thompson is one of the best, beauty, brains and brilliant humor all wrapped into one classy, courteous and courageous package. She is always entertaining to watch, though in the most interesting, breathtaking and impressive way. She might be the greatest actress of our era (post 1980), alongside Meryl Streep and Judi Dench. Emma is an amazing woman, that's for sure, and very much unlike most of her peers she doesn't take herself too seriously. Talent wise, she can't be beat, thoroughly commendable, legitimate and awesome as it is, and spellbinding as she can be. Every time she wins an award of such a high and prestigious caliber the Gods of justice dance a spirited jig way up in the realm of the otherworldly, and the afterlife blazes with surreal sunshine. Brilliant!!

Emma Thompson a class actor in her own terms!!.. I just saw again Howards End, and as good as the movie is, I couldn't help but arguing that Thompson gave a much better and complex performance in another James Ivory film, "The Remains of the Day" than on this one for which she won the Oscar. Howards End it's not for everybody, it is kinda slow at times, but as a whole, it survives because of many things such as the superb acting, the cinematography, the art direction, and an excellent Original score. Anthony Hopkins gives one of the most underrated performances and he should've been nominated for an Oscar that year . Whatever the case is, Howards End it's one of the best movies from the last century.

It should be noted that a total of about 11 people have received Writing and Acting nominations in the same year. They are: Charlie Chaplin, Orson Welles, Sylvester Stallone, Woody Allen, Warren Beatty, Massimo Troisi, Billy Bob Thornton, Matt Damon, Roberto Benigni, George Clooney, and Emma Thompson. Emma is the ONLY woman to achieve this feat (she achieved this feat for SENSE AND SENSIBILITY), as well as the ONLY person (male or female) to win both categories (winning Screenplay for SENSE AND SENSIBILITY and Actress for HOWARD'S END). Side note: With the exception of George Clooney, everyone else have achieved this feat for one film. Also, Clooney and Warren Beatty are not only the only ones in this group to achieve the double nomination TWICE, but they BOTH achieved a unique Oscar feat that no one else achieved (before or since) and they achieved it twice. In Beatty's case, he's the ONLY person ever to receive Producing, Directing, Acting, and Writing nominations in the same year, doing to twice (for HEAVEN CAN WAIT and REDS respectively). In Clooney's case, it is receiving the nominations for 2 different films in the same year (also doing so twice) (in his case, it was Acting for SYRIANA and Writing for GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK (both in 2005) and Acting for THE DESCENDANTS and Writing for THE IDES OF MARCH (both in 2011)).
