People in this day and age say "aw, these guys were just 80s famous" like it's something to denigrate, but they don't understand just what a thing that was. Fame really meant something back then, not like today when everybody and their dog is reality tv and social media famous.

What a fighter and inspiring man MJ Fox is! It's hard to believe that he's been diagnosed three decades (!) ago and then goes on stage and delivers such a great 13-minute speech - even taking his shaking hand with humor. His achievement in funding Parkinson's research goes way beyond any honor in existence.

Brilliant speech. Those of us who grew up in the 80's remember 80's famous. Michael has achieved a lot in life, some of the most memorable movies ever made. A loving family and a wonderful wife. But you don't realise until you hear him talk what a cracking sense of humour he has. This speech was both funny and moving. He has met Parkinson's head on, and it does not, and has not, ever defined who he is. Michael is still the same person he always was, and his willingness to help others is a testament to who he is as a person. Good man

In March this year I lost my father who struggled with Parkinson's for more than a decade. All he wanted was to have some dignity around those that knew him. Michael J Fox not only has that, but respect from both his peers in the entertainment business and anyone and everyone that understands what they are going through, but will still love them all the same. Thank you for your courage and example to millions of others that suffer the same disease globally.

I'll tell you a story about a similar situation in my life. 2 childhood friends fought as teens and the more brilliant and promising of the 2 ended up in a year long coma and with a severe traumatic brain injury. The prognosis was "he'll never wake up". He did. Then, " he'll never talk". He did with great difficulty. Then, " he'll never walk". He did with great difficulty. Then, he won't be able to take care of himself". He did. And not only that, he returned to university in our town and earned his doctorate and for years he was tenured mathematics professor. He was killed riding his inline bicycle on the way to campus a few years ago. He was an amazing guy and I admired him and I will always tell people about him. We were fast friends to the end. A movie he made when he was young, several people who worked on the movie later developed Parkinson’s, which leads to believe that there might be an environmental connection, especially since he was so young when he was diagnosed, not even 30. Parkinson’s usually doesn’t start showing symptoms until patients are in their 60’s
@canileaveitblank14762 жыл бұрын

Thank you for your vulnerability in your comment. Most of us live our lives distracted with entertainment or chores and not thinking about the temporary nature of our lives-almost thinking we are eternal creatures. But in reality everyone from young people to elderly people are vulnerable to death. It’s a reality that death is part of life just as birth is. I guess knowing we will eventually die can make us treat ourselves and others with compassion and kindness. We can appreciate our lives more knowing the fleeting nature of it. Happy Holidays to you Emmanuel
@Cangaca777 Жыл бұрын
Death is a great compassion. My only 'problem' is how little time we have. I think 200 years or even 300 is a good lifetime period for a person to have, 80/90 years is just not enough imo. but living here forever? nah, I wouldn't want that.

Fox seemed to creep in some of the research as I was deep diving this disease and learning. I just finally came across this video and it brought tears to my eyes. Hes suffered through this horrid disease along time, he was as he said unsure of its progression, it was very fast for my father (15 yrs), it was soul, spirit, mind, and emotionally crushing, MJ Fox has such humor and grace dealing with it, he gave me hope, and he is a inspiration. I am in tears. An outstanding and heartwarming speech. What an inspiring, intelligent, kind and funny human being. Handling the most difficult of circumstances with such grace and aplomb. Lets "be like Michael J. Fox."

I have been drawn to this beautiful human since I was 5 years old and saw Back to the Future for the first time. What a true gem amongst people. Been a fan since then and I am always learning something from him. He’s truly the person who taught me to find job and optimism in little things ❤

I’ve always loved Michael. He’s such a brilliant man and his acting was always over the top. I’m astonished how well and intelligently he spoke accepting this award. His bravery is heartwarming and it was obvious how much admiration everyone there has for him. Love to Tracy and his family for the way they’ve stood by him. He is so blessed to have them in his life. I hope Michael can continue to make us laugh for years to come. He should get another award for being able to keep his sense of humor after being stricken with that awful disease. Love you Michael. Keep on keeping on and may God bless you, and continue to use you to to help find a cure for this disease❤

Damn - that was such an honest, straight up, clearly messaged, humble, and hilarious speech. I grew up watching Mike, not just in BTTFs, but things like Doc Hollywood, Casualties of War, and The Frighteners. That was amazing, and I love that he got to chuck such a tight and wryly written speech so well at all of us.

Gosh he actually made me tear up. Such an inspiration, legend and great actor. I supported someone with Parkinson so know the daily struggles but seeing him up there is beautiful.

What a sense of humor-- and perpetual inspiration. I'm not a Parkinson's sufferer, but I'm an elliptic and my right hand shakes a lot too: I have actually looked at my hand and said "stop it/can you not??" the exact same way Michael does. His work will always mean so much to me, as someone who has a condition where the science is also ahead of the money. Instead of looking for cures, the focus is on *managing* it. Generations to follow us deserve a world where there are *cures* for these conditions.

I have a grandpa with Parkinson’s, it’s uncanny how both of these guys have a great sense of humor of life. Michael J Fox has helped so many in this community, if I could I would consistently thank him for what he has done.
