In the new episode in the series where we're building patches from scratch on the Behringer DeepMind we put together a classic style mono lead patch and dig down into some of the menus to fine-tune not just how the patch sounds, but also importantly how it feels to play.

This is much more valuable. Keep up the good work brother. I look forward to looking at all of your mind videos

Hey there! Another great vid. One question though (in two parts!). When using the effects in Send mode, would you say it's better to have the mix at 100% and change the level rather than changing the mix amount? Is this a way of keeping more of the analog signal against the digital processing?
@OscillatorSink
@OscillatorSink 5 жыл бұрын
If you have mix at anything other than 100 percent you start mixing in the digitised dry sound from the previous effect in the chain, so it depends on what effects (and arrangement of effects) you're using. What you want to avoid at all costs is mixing in uneffected dry sound because the micro latency will create nasty ringing and comb filtering. So if you're only using 1 effect then you definitely always want mix on 100 percent on that effect; in other situations... it depends! In send mode you are always getting all of your analogue signal. The digital effect is mixed in in parallel. If you want to have more analogue vs. digital, you just keep the level on the last effect in the chain lower. All make sense?

question: having listened to this series of tutorials (a few times; it's so relaxing just listening at whilst I'm at work lol) I feel like the moment the effects are engaged something is lost in the sound... do you (as someone who has spent a while with the Deepmind) experience this 'tone suck' when you're in the room with the instrument or is it confirmation bias on my part do you think?
@OscillatorSink
@OscillatorSink 5 жыл бұрын
So... Let's not get into discussions of AD/DA convertors, but yes, if you engage the effects in Insert mode I can hear a change (because the whole signal is going through the engine). In send mode, I don't hear anything noticeable (certainly not objectionable anyway). Thanks for watching the series, I'm glad you enjoy it! I do the same with the likes of Cuckoo's videos too!

I have a Deepmind 12D on order. Should I get a Model D “boog” also? Is there any reason I should or shouldn’t get a model D?

I got these two, the boog and the dm12 as my first synths and they are completely different for sure. I play them both differently and the dm12 is definitely way more flexible, but the model d is so easy and immediate to play. I would love to have a neutron someday, but I think I need a drum machine more haha

So sorry for comment shouting at your first video on this synth, it has obviously been covered. Nice! For reference, this is kind of the sound I was after, which appears in verses 1 and 3: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6fQc6yVpbicg9E. After watching this, I'm fairly certain I can get there on this instrument, but any advice would definitely be welcome!

Hello, I'm planning to buy a Deepmind. I live in Costa Rica so I will have to pay a big chunk for customs and international shipping fees depending on which one I pick. I was wondering if the 12 is in fact a way better option than the 6, or the 6 will be good enough for what I need, play for fun, learn synthesis, record for fun and play and jam around with friends. I'm kind of new on synths so I will truly appreciate your advise, I don't want to regret of buying something I won't really take advantage of, or getting short in the future (I have a couple of midi keyboard interfaces already) .. Thanks in advance.
@OscillatorSink
@OscillatorSink 4 жыл бұрын
If you already have some midi controllers, then I would highly recommend the Deepmind 12D (the desktop module) as by far the best value option. I'm happy with the 6 voices *usually*, but there are definitely times when I wish I had 12.

@OscillatorSink
@OscillatorSink 5 жыл бұрын
Yep - via the mod matrix you can assign pretty much anything, whether directly ("mod wheel controls this parameter" ) or indirectly ("mod wheel controls the amount that this LFO controls this parameter"). Check out my "build an ambient pad" video in this series for an example.

PLEASE ALWAYS play the sound you’re trying to create FIRST! Then show us how to create it. This a fundamental principle in teaching! “Show the car you’re trying to build FIRST “ If you wanted to,learn how to assemble a car…wouldn’t you expect to see it first? Rest of video is great. But, seriously dude, play the finished sound first and tie your explanation back to what it’s going to do in the finished sound. If you want to be REALLY excellent…go back and forth…target sound, where we are now,and what we do next and why. Otherwise, frankly, not to be too critical you’re just showing off your skills and the teaching suffers 40 year veteran, technical trainer, and professor speaking here.

Sorry, 21:23 onwards too can hear the finished patch, although I also cover some concepts that can be useful in other types of patches too. I'll pin a comment for you with that timestamp as well. I'll work some Blooms Taxonomy into the description next time too, so folks can really get a hold of what they're intended to learn by the end of the video.
