Oscilloscope Comparison of emulated and real Yamaha SMAF FM chip

MidRadio 7 and genuine Yamaha YMU762c (marked Y762C on the chip) MA-3 SMAF recordings.
Intended to compare the differences between Yamaha's own closed source emulator and a real chip, for potential future emulation efforts.
The FM synth is emulated well, but there is some quantization noise(?) on the DAC that isn't present in emulation. Many more differences are present with ADPCM/PCM playback from emulator to real hardware though, as the real MA-3 seems to have a filter on the output.

The real chip sounds kind of like it has ladder effect/time-division multiplexing like the Sega Genesis did. I wonder if that is the case.

Might be the inferior quantization. The multiplexing might only happen when many voices are playing at a time.

What is the SMAF file that you are testing here ? It does not seem to be any of the MA-3 middleware files from Yamaha.

Right, it didn't come from Yamaha. It's a cover of the short blips in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5LHiKhtndhng7c Used ATS-MA5-SMAF to make the .mmf files, one being an unmodified SynBass1 patch, the other being a slightly edited version of the default SynBass1 patch.

MidRadio 7 can do MA-1 up to MA-7, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you are playing MA-7 content. The software emulator's volume is turned up far too high so louder tones and songs will clip regardless of your mixer settings.

​@@KineTheFish I would advise against using PSMPlayer for MMF playback as it incorrectly uses the MSGS synth with no support for Stream PCM or PCM Wave instruments
