I think the fact that these engines are very solid and reliable has been clearly established by now. Many of them are still in service as of 1016 - after having returned from Greece where they were obviously in the wrong hands.

Absolutely brilliant video. V200 with a formidable diesel sound and many old German coaches. Cool old water tab for the steam engines between the tracks. Thumbs up! :)

These 221's certanly got louder when used in Greece, their silencers must have rotten away because of poor maintenance. That last train 221 and Craiova was hellfire, on paper these 2 locomotives should have 6500hp totall, but with the 221 on one engine and the Craiova with probably 2 traction motors isolated and likely engine problems its more like 3000hp.

In DB service 221 101-221 119 [1962 build] had no silencers at all. After a period of time in OSE service some of the roof panels from the later build [221 120- 221 150] were exchanged for non silenced roof panels from other retired OSE 411s as they were less likely to catch fire, as neither of the locos in this video were from the original batch, but definitely had non-silenced roof panels! A.554 definitely was deficient in the motors department on that day because 420 had no problem hauling the train and pushing it along on just one engine, so it is possible it was an easy way to get an ailing Craiova back to Athens. It also didn't help that the Craiova didn't "load up" very well as the control system wasn't efficient. Even with a full set of motors I doubt they ever produced anything near 3,000hp.

That train behind the 221 and the A.554 is awesome. I'd have loved to have gone on that!

A Big icon from germany. And this base locomotive also was used in Spain, Italy And various country's. And speaking of Spain, in RENFE, the base locomotive was named Class 340, A.K.A the "Torpedo Verde".

I first went to Greece in1988 and never saw one of these diesel hydraulics. Bloody good choice to buy of a second hand loco though:-))

Wenn man weiß, wie viele unnütze Leute bei der OSE beschäftigt sind und damit dem Staat auf der Tasche liegen, wundert der Zustand der V200 nicht.
